So I see NL has the S10 for $950, and the S10+ for $1100. I'm assuming the extra $150 is worth it? (Just worried S10+ would be too big for my hands, I use my phone a lot for playing Pokemon GO, among other things...)

I think you wanted the S10 owners thread, this here is for the S20 series.

In general, I would go and try it yourself, as the difference in size is not 'uge Nigel, but could put you just over the comfortable one-handed use. On the other hand, the extra battery size (4100mah vs. 3400mah) would be a point in favor of the S10+, but there really isn't much else in it between those two things. Oh, and the extra camera module on the front means a bigger punch hole (bar?) in the display as well.

Oops yes I'm in the wrong area, thanks for the advice anyway :D

Had ordered a S20 from the Market from their sale on the weekend. Until I found out S20 has two variants, and we have the Exynos one here in NZ :( - From what I've been reading, it's worse by quite a bit. Overheating phone, worse battery, worse camera, just general all round lower performance. Sorry Samsung, I'll be taking my money elsewhere.

To be honest, unless you are doing compute or GPU heavy stuff (gaming usually), it is perfectly fine in day-to-day use. The battery is only a little bit worse, and the Exynos camera stack is actually supposed to be marginally better. Had my S20+ for 4 months now, and it only gets warm when I leave it on the wireless charger for a while.

It sucks when compared to the SD for sure, but given we only get the Exynos first party here, I don't think it is as bad IRL as r/android seems to make out.

If you are gaming though, definitely find something SD equipped. If I was buying today, I would be looking at a OnePlus 8 Pro for the right price.

Just reading that the note 20 will also get the same Exynos 990 as the s20 so will be skipping it and keep with my snapdragon note 10+. Might even make a jump back to iOS after seeing what apple has later this year.

I'm getting a bit sick of paying around 2k for a phone that only gets 2 major OS updates in its life time.

They would have had the silicon allocated for the Note 20 before the S20 even went on sale, I'd imagine. Hopefully they are able to optimize it at the least. Highly unlikely, but a SD 865+ would have been boss!

I'm quite interested to see what the rumored completely ARM reference design for the next Exynos chip looks like; hopefully they can focus more on making it competitive with SD, since their custom core designs didn't really work out.

I must admit with how refined Samsung's curated version of Android is over stock, and their attempts to ape the Apple ecosystem, it's almost been a gateway to making think I should just give iOS a go. If I could get over my frustration at everything counter-intuitive to a native Android user, that is haha.

It depends on what you mean by OS updates.  S9 just got One UI 2.1, does that count as a OS update?

Android devices have always gotten two OS updates so I don't know why anyone is surprised.  Of course lots of enhancements are released through google play services or the app ecosystem so you can't quite equate iOS updates to Android OS updates.

Android devices still get security updates for another year and the app ecosystem update almost forever.  When your iOs device runs out of support you get nothing, you slowly loose apps when the minimum OS version gets to be greater than yours.  Then to top it all off apple release updates to slow your device down.

If you want something infinite updates forever then get a Windows laptop.

Gaming is exactly what I generally do on my phone as I play quite a bit of Pokemon GO. So battery life is important. I can see the phone eating up quite easily for me personally, will look elsewhere.

@Finch Pokemon GO is not gaming and and you are over reacting to the Exynos chip compared to the Snap dragon!

I have the S20+ and battery life excellent

Currently using Exynos S20 Ultra with 5G on and can easily get through the day (this is while tethering to another device) while Playing Pokemon Go.

I agree this SD/Exynos thing is blown out of proportion.
Granted Battery life isn't as good as my Note10+ but with 120hz on and 5G i expected as much.

I see the reasoning but in day to day use....

Well it's a game, which runs the battery down rather fast as GPS must be running while playing. It's obviously not very graphic intensive, but the GPS certainly runs it down.

Also not sure why we (Here in NZ/around the world) should have to accept 2nd best. *Shrug*

(Not arguing, just making a comment).

I went into a Noel Leeming store today, my second time in, but this time I went to a different store. I was playing around with the S20 for 6ish minutes, possibly 7. In that time I checked to see how the messaging was, checked the settings, but mainly what I did was test the camera. In the time I spent with the phone, in the end I had to walk away from it because it started to heat up on the top right hand side. What I said above, is literally all I did, with the majority of my time spent on the camera. I took pictures of my hand and checked to see if there was any motion blur, there was actually a bit. However, my main gripe with the phone reading all reviews came to a head there. I want to buy this phone, I want to like it, but playing around with it for only a handful of minutes and it started overheating? That's a big no for me. I thought maybe it was charging at the same time, so then ok I would've been a bit more understanding, however it wasn't charging. I even turned it to dark mode and turned screen brightness down before I left (In the final minute or so of me holding it) and was expecting the heat to drop down, but no it didn't.

Am I missing something here? How this phone is going to work in the summer is beyond me and I can see why it's on special right now.

@finch You seriously need to find another hobby! As already advised nothing wrong with the handset and I have zero issues!

Ha! Yes been procrastinating about new phone for a week now, doing my head in. I just don't see how using it for a handful of minutes, the camera for 5, causes the phone to heat up. Perhaps it was a faulty unit? I didn't notice overheating on the one I was playing with last week, granted I didn't take notice though so perhaps it was.
