kiwijunglist: don't put too much merit in led flashes, they are quite bad, led is good for movie lighting, but for photos you need xenon flash.

Yeah my old k800 which I still have has a xenon flash which cost like $350, I could never understand why these phones that cost 1k have either no flash or LED flashes.
Bring back xenon flashes....

kiwijunglist: I really hope your opinion of the camera improves, because I want a phone with a semi-decent camera. PS. most reviewers said the camera is reasonably good.

Yeah, I read lots of reviews before I bought it, most said it was fairly good and good under low light too.
Most reviewers said how fast the phone was too and didn't mention anything about delays or lag.

I'm not sure how much time reviewers actually spend with phones, I don't trust them so much anymore.
Far better to go to forums where actual users are talking about the, to find out the real issues, like here for instance :), let others be the guinea pigs so to speak.

The camera takes decent shots of still objects, but I've had real problems getting non blurry images of anything moving and I would have expected it to be as good as or better than the iphone 3gs. Ill test again tomorrow trying to get some shots of my kid, he is good to test with, never sits still :).

It might just be low light, when you look at the properties of the photos in Windows (or whatever) what does it say the exposure speed and f-stop are for the blurry photos? Have you tried the "sports" scene setting, which should choose the minimum exposure speed for the available light?

Yeah could be low light but taking them no differently than I did with the iphone 3gs, these were indoors shots
Yeah tried the sports setting etc first thing I tried along with the anti shake, went through all the settings.
I'll take a looksie and see what the details were in the photos later on but anyway its definitely not taking photos as well as the iphone or my old k800. Wife just sent some she took in the mall on her phone and all hers were blurry too :(
she wants to sell hers yesterday...

I've read quite a few over the last weekend. And most point towards the Galaxy being laggy after a bit of use. And of course it doesn't have an LED flash. The GPU isn't an issue for me as I don't have the phone to play games on (that's what my PS3 is for).

The most important things are communication - email, texts, phoning, twitter/fb etc, and GPS navigation.

The rest is nice to have, but it must do the above well.

My iPhone 3g is starting to lag quite badly now, and I really want to make the right decision for the next couple of years worth of device usage!

Well then count the desire out if you want it for gps navigation, you tried using a gps you cant see? :P
Those amoled screens are shocking with any reflection and if you are thinking of mounting it on windscreen or using it outside in your hand - ouch..., that is the main reason i sold my nexus after only owning it for 2 weeks, that and the issue of it not having decent multitouch.
Either go LCD or s-amoled if you want to use it outside..

I've used the galaxy to drive around with and its fine, my issue is when using it in the hand and walking around with it its a bit funny...

obviously the rest of your criteria are all software based basically so the same over any android phone, they will just look a lot nicer on the bigger and brighter screen of the galaxy.

Lag is definitely under control for me now so im a bit happier.. even managed to take some decent shots with the camera so im suspecting the lag might have been causing the camera problems too...

I've used the Desire with turn by turn navigation (brut mod) on Google Maps in my car and didn't have any issues with the gps signal or the screen visibility. This was on a trip from Auckland to Taupo and back, and also several other places within the city as well.

I think I read somewhere about some issues raised over the gps on the SGS vs the Desire ...

You must have better eyes than me then, I remember walking around having to find trees to shelter under to be able to see the nexus screen.

Interesting article, perhaps that is why I have not had an issue with it in the car as I am using the leaked firmware they are talking about.

Hi,

As our handsets are imported they do not attract any GST. On any invoice that you receive from us, the GST amount will always be $0. Alot of customers get this confused.

the internet one which i entered first using the apn www.vodafone.net.nz
works fine has a green light next to it..
but when i enter the second apn for the mms when i exit out there is no green light next to it..

It is ok, I think its the pick of the android bunch right now but it still has its flaws which shouldn't be there which is what annoys me. It just seems with a lot of these phones we take steps forward in one area and steps backwards in others which is quite frustrating. The main issue for me was the lag which has been resolved so am happy there. The camera is a bit of a disappointment and so when I snap a bunch of photos and get home and find they are pretty blurry yeah its a bit annoying but anyway... one day they will get it right..
My wife is going to sell hers and get an iphone 4 when they arrive at the end of the month so I am looking forward to comparing these two myself.

I keep buying android devices cause I like android, just a bit unhappy with the hardware that comes with it usually :)
