Haven't seen any posts here about the SGS ii yet, so I'm either going blind or nobody's talking about it. Rumour is a dual-core Orion CPU, 1GB RAM and a higher res screen as well as being even thinner than the current model. That and the Tab 2 are supposedly being announced at WMC on Feb 13 in Spain (I think).

No word yet on whether or not Gingerbread will be on board, but I hope so.

So lokhor, time to start your new SGS ii mega-thread? Laughing

Cheers,
R2D2

Edit: Hmmm... this time the edit worked. Go figure...

GPS goodness

Did the LbsTestMode performance test on my SGS's GPS as a follow-on from the comments a few posts back. Test ran on battery and in my office (tile roof), test cycle set to the default 100 starts.

Fastest lock - 6.301 seconds
Slowest lock - 11.352 seconds
Average lock - 8.144 seconds

Accuracy - 15 metres

I don't know how much better other handsets are in their lock times and accuracy, but I think those results are pretty good by any standard. I regularly see people online complaining about the SGS GPS performance, so I can only wonder about their expectations. Somewhere I read about an antenna mod that supposedly improves the signal and 'sees' more satellites so goggling that may benefit some who feel that sub 10 seconds for an indoor lock at 15 metres is substandard.

I'm happy as a clam with mine though. maybe ignorance is indeed bliss. Smile

Cheers,
R2D2

Haha I think not. I'm definitely not endorsing another Galaxyfest. I don't think I'm going to buy another Samsung device tbh.

Make sure your apn settings are correct for XT. Signal drops are normal depending on the strength of your signal at any moment. For example, my VF signal fluctuates from 1 to 3 bars in my office and can cause voice comms to distort whereas in the family room at the other end of the house, I get full bars all of the time and perfect reception.

GPS is unrelated to the GSM. Getting a lock is dependent on your GPS settings so you might need to set your phone up to get the best performance. Search for my post in this thread which supplies a how-to for getting the maximum from the GPS. Note that allowing the GPS to use wifi will help with lock times, location accuracy and such.

HTH.

Well I'm not going to be in the market for another phone for a while, seeing how my VF contract won't end until November, and who knows what magical phones will be out by then...

The teaser ads for the Galaxy S 2 make it look stunningly slim though. We'll know for sure in a couple of weeks. But unless I win Lotto, it'll be look, don't touch.

Meh@Slimness, it's overrated. I had a feel of a Desire Z the other day and it feels solid and of much higher quality. I won't be getting a new phone for a year or two due to cost but I will definitely be looking out for whichever manufacturer provides the best quality and best upgrade support. HTC seem to have a fairly good track record for support but haven't announced any spectacular dual core phones, only rumours of the Pyramid. I still think the Motorola Atrix has some awesome ideas with the net top but their locked bootloader may be the deal breaker.

I'll also be looking at getting an HTC at the end of the year. I really dont like how cheap the SGS feels.

You'll need to enter the XT apn settings in order for it to work correctly. (See the sticky post in the Android forum). Once that's done, if it's seeing 3G it will appear on the notification bar. You'll need to check it where you know the 850 is working and there's no 2100 signal. (Next to a cell tower in the city centre would probably suffice if you're in a major city).

If the data up and down shows H, then it's fully enabled. If not, and there's no 3G icon, it's not.

At least that's how I think it should happen.

Sure thing. I'll buy that Lotto ticket tomorrow. Laughing

I'm just trying to narrow the gap between us to a few hundred. If I comment on the comments about my comments about the editing issues on this site, that should boost the post-padding.

I've been keeping an eye on the sgs2 also. The Atrix and the LG Optimus 2X are the leading contenders in the dual core category at the moment..Don't really like the look of either so seeing what Samsung dishes up at MWC.
