I believe that this mega-thread should continue simply because it's the greatest repository of SGS developments for NZ owners. As the developments for the Galaxy S are evolving, so does the thread, making it of great value to the advanced user while the earlier legacy material is extremely useful for the beginner.

With February's announcement of the Galaxy S2 looming, the original Galaxy S's development will inevitably slow and the thread will subsequently reduce in importance, thus becoming an archive rather than a living resource. So it will 'die' naturally as a consequence, making the locking redundant.

Thanks for asking though, instead of simply locking without consultation - very much appreciated.

Chers Mauricio,

Mauricio...

Thanks also for making the thread sticky. You're a toff.

Can I ask, while we have your attention, that you tweak the post edit window so that it's a bit longer? Maybe 90 minutes? Dunno about others here, but I often find typos in my posts (like the one above) only after I've been away doing something else for a while, and by the time I've spotted them, it's too late. And apologies for the OT post but since you are here at the moment... Embarassed

Thanks in advance and cheers,
R2D2

basicallythis: ... I and no doubt countless others are still reading this thread no doubt from the first post til now.

Maybe, but that becomes less likely the bigger it gets. And there will be just as many who won't bother to read such a massive volume of text just to find the few nuggets that are of use to them. And if you have an 850 phone from, or on, Telecom, it really is just occasional nuggets.

The search function is not sufficient, in my opinion, as it can only find the posts that contain the search terms. (I assume. Search is not working at all for me right now, and I don't recall how it works, just that I've never found it useful on the subject of my Galaxy.) So it might find the posts that ask the same question you have, but the answer to the question, if it exists at, may be 10 or 20 pages further on and may not show up in the search results. So you still have to wade through a lot of unrelated stuff to find what you want. If the search could at least narrow things down to a smaller thread that is focused on the very question you have, then there is a lot less wasted time and effort.

There are already multiple simultaneous discussions going on in this thread. The purpose of threads is to help track those separate lines of discussion, and it seems like we should have a really compelling reason to choose not to track them. I haven't seen one. For some reason, this one forum thread is being used like a mailing list, except that even mailing lists have better thread tracking than we have here.

there are heaps of other websites to find answers to specific questions about galaxy s, if someone wants to start their own thread on something specific then they are free to do so. If you don't like this thread then don't read/subscribe/post to it.

I agree with the people above. This thread has been real useful to me when I got my SGS 2 months ago, more so than any other website I have found on the internet.

Please let it be :)

It appears to me that everyone has a good point to make.

I apologies for having been off topic more than once or twice. I don't know if I can use the gender card as an excuse or not. And I hope it hasn't turned people away.

Hopefully I've had more useful stuff to contribute than not.  But for me, I like that we're not just in and out, ask a question, off you go.  There's nothing wrong with that of course, but it's good to have a steady stream of constant contributors that give some sort of stability and authority on the topic (not that anyone of us probably thinks we're experts).

I like the sense of community.  Perhaps a forum isn't the best place for growing a community of the type I feel we have here.

However, I do think that perhaps showing that we're fairly normal makes others more comfortable asking their first question.

Right now I feel sort of uncomfortable with what's going on.  Perhaps the gender card being shown again.

What would be a real shame is if people stopped contributing for fear of being "real".  Geeks can have personalities too.

I feel quite responsible for where the discussion has lead.  I never intended for people to feel as if they might be in the wrong for starting a new thread.  But neither did I want anyone to feel excluded from this thread where so much information is shared amongst the readers.

Anyway, as is normal with my gender, I've said an awful lot of words to try and convey my feelings in a manner that wont aggravate or upset anyone.

I hope information continues to flow freely and that people benefit from the exchange of ideas and suggestions, referrals and advice.

^ Neets, any grievance anyone may have with your off-topic banter needs to be weighed against your excellent track record with helping newbies (and oldies) out, both here and in new threads that pop up.
I think those contributions far outweight any distraction you may perceive to be burdening this thread.

Don't beat yourself up over it. Its not your burden to carry and I think you are doing a stellar job of telling us what is going down over at xda (a far more daunting place than this wee thread).

The powers that be are clearly worried that this thread's page-count could engulf the entire first page of this sub-forum because rather than show a sensible range like -
1, 2, 3, 4......... 280, 281, 282 etc on a single line, it shows every single individual page. That means other threads will have to be bumped.
That is clearly a short-coming of the forum software or choices of implimentation that are out of our hands.

We are working as best we can with what we are given at the end of the day. I'll go along with whatever the mob decides is right.

Back on topic -
My battery and wifi sucks, Doc's kitchen seems stagnant and hasn't been updated this month and I'm not sure what to do? Think I'll just whinge.

What are you currently running fahrenheit?  The #romkitchen has been very quiet.  There's nothing going on at all at the moment.  But not just in the Doc XDA thread.  Other Devs seem to be MIA too.

Another 2c-worth. . . . .I'm rather prone to going off on tangents also, but as Neets and others have said, that is exactly what makes this forum (and this thread especially) so effective; the 'off-the-ball' banter is the social mortar that holds the bricks of knowledge together.

Even more than that, the sense of community in this thread is exactly why you know you can rely on getting quick, helpful answers to any issues, as well as giving you a wee prod to flash the latest this or that, because you know someone will have your back and help you sort it if things go pear-shaped.

And for those that say the size of this thread works against you, the very reason that sites like Geekzone work is that the regulars are prepared to take learning from others, but also chime in and give back knowledge in return.  If we all just flew in, took the nuggets of knowledge we required, and never returned, it just wouldn't work.

As older people like to say - "stick around - you might learn something"

Darkyy's 9.1 - which has played havoc with my wifi/3G resulting in significant battery drain.

Have been wanting to jump-ship but was holding out for the latest speedmod to be included in the kitchen.
Now I see that speedmod isn't quite as stable as I thought and people are talking up Tegrak.

Speedmod not stable?  Since when?  Maybe it isn't with Darky's ROM, but I've been using it since moving to Doc's rig and it's been bullet-proof. . . . .And every iteration is getting quicker and slicker.

I wouldn't use anything else.

Mmm, you know SpeedMod K12R with HZ=500 is the kernel currently on offer in the Public kitchen?

And these from the Beta kitchen:

Trasig's Kernelv666.1 Voodoo Sound - ONLY USE CW3 COMPATIBLE UPDATE.ZIP PACKAGES!
Trasig's Kernelv666.2 OC/UV Version - ONLY USE CW3 COMPATIBLE UPDATE.ZIP PACKAGES!
Tegrak's Kernel *EXPERIMENTAL*Tegrak Kernel Build 15 - for I9000 XWJS3

I think you can grab the Tegrak kernel from the XDA thread.  So you could flash that over the top of a rom.  There's a number of senior contributors to the Doc thread who've been using Tegrak and singing it's praises.

Others have been saying the SM kernel has provided good battery life.  What kernel is your Darky rom running?

EDIT:  The SM kernel in the public kitchen includes the wifi fix.  Does Darky's one?
