My battery and wifi sucks, Doc's kitchen seems stagnant and hasn't been updated this month and I'm not sure what to do? Think I'll just whinge.

What are you currently running fahrenheit?  The #romkitchen has been very quiet.  There's nothing going on at all at the moment.  But not just in the Doc XDA thread.  Other Devs seem to be MIA too.

Darkyy's 9.1 - which has played havoc with my wifi/3G resulting in significant battery drain.

Have been wanting to jump-ship but was holding out for the latest speedmod to be included in the kitchen.
Now I see that speedmod isn't quite as stable as I thought and people are talking up Tegrak.

ive just CWM flashed darky's v9.2 with speedmod K12T, it has specific fixes for wifi, market etc.

from what i understand, darky has been having trouble with the modified wifi driver that supports adhoc connections, so this build gives you the option to choose the more stable driver (using the darkyrom configurator app off the market which has been updated to v1.05 now with the new options for you to choose what you want)

i flashed a no-wipe to speedmod (from voodoo kernel i was running on darkys v9.1), no modem (thus preserving my UGJL2 modem which is working fantastic), and normal wifi, and all went well. i have no wifi constant searching, connects to my wireless at home in 3secs, no speed issues. battery was good on 9.1 when using the JL2 modem and i will have to see how it goes in this one, so far so good.

FWIW id give the v9.2 a no-wipe flash and see if your wifi problems are resolved...?

the other main thing with v9.2 is that he has released an odin-flashable version with all his tweaks and dbdata all formatted properly so you get a high speed clean base if you decide to wipe everything. so again, a good option if you really want to start fresh.

anyway, just an option if you wanted to try Darky's, this was all updated and released (as far as i can see) this morning :)

gd luck!

Speedmod not stable?  Since when?  Maybe it isn't with Darky's ROM, but I've been using it since moving to Doc's rig and it's been bullet-proof. . . . .And every iteration is getting quicker and slicker.

I wouldn't use anything else.

Stable is probably not the word I should have used. I noted that K12T went for days untouched and I interpreted that to mean that it was going to be the standard for some time to come. As soon as I showed any interest, K12U showed up.... I think I might have a problem with wanting the latest and greatest...

Neets:
Mmm, you know SpeedMod K12R with HZ=500 is the kernel currently on offer in the Public kitchen?

I do indeed. I also know that T comes after R and so to my mind, R is really old and crusty and so I've been waiting for the kitchen to include T. Should I be considering R?

[And these from the Beta kitchen:

Trasig's Kernelv666.1 Voodoo Sound - ONLY USE CW3 COMPATIBLE UPDATE.ZIP PACKAGES!
Trasig's Kernelv666.2 OC/UV Version - ONLY USE CW3 COMPATIBLE UPDATE.ZIP PACKAGES!
Tegrak's Kernel *EXPERIMENTAL*Tegrak Kernel Build 15 - for I9000 XWJS3

I think you can grab the Tegrak kernel from the XDA thread.  So you could flash that over the top of a rom.  There's a number of senior contributors to the Doc thread who've been using Tegrak and singing it's praises.

That brings up a question that might make my concerns academic.
If at times like now, when the kitchen is closed (so to speak), can I manually add the latest kernel or modem etc myself to a cooked rom? Or do I have to flash, then flash the kernel etc.

If its the latter, I'm much more inclined to wait until all the stars align so that I can minimise risk/workload.
I do tend to go at least a couple of weeks on a rom before I move on, so I don't like to get too flash-happy if I can avoid it.

Others have been saying the SM kernel has provided good battery life.  What kernel is your Darky rom running?

EDIT:  The SM kernel in the public kitchen includes the wifi fix.  Does Darky's one?

Its on voodoo and I've been enjoying 'non-wipe' for the last six roms I've flashed.
There was wifi fix on 9.1 but I see there is another fix for 9.2.

Thanks.
I think I'm ready for a change though and I think I like the level of customisation Doc's kitchen is offering.

You absolutely DON'T have to reflash everything - that's precisely why the kernel updates exist in a CWM form - just flash it like any other zip you select from your SD card - it takes all of 5 seconds.  You don't have to remove lagfixes either.  Too simple.

I didn't think for a minute that I'd have to flash everything.

What I'm not clear on is say for example I build a rom right now and choose Speedmod K12R, simply because thats the latest version available in the kitchen... Would I then flash the cooked rom (with R) then go and flash say K12T over that again?
Or can you inject T straight in without having to flash R in the first place?

I just want to minimise things and not worry about components that are defunct/out of date.

I've casually observed some conversations about how you can open the zip file, whip out what you don't want, add what you do (to the right directories) and then close the zip file.  But I haven't paid enough attention to feel comfortable saying that it's all that's required and it's safe as houses.  I'll ask in the #romkitchen, perhaps someone there knows for certain.

EDIT:  yes (in theory) you can.  But use 7zip.

the easiest thing to do is flash your kitchen completed rom, and then flash the updated kernel over the top via cwm, in exactly the same method.

the other way is you have your completed rom, and unzip it, you would then delete the current kernel and replace it with the updated kernel, and then re zip it. you'd then flash as per usual via cwm. this is a real pain in the neck way of "injecting" a newer kernel into a rom.

first method is much easier and quicker.

Thanks Neets.

Its definitely my preferred way to keep order as I can lose track of what I've done if I patch a little here, patch a little there... before long I don't recognize what I'm running.

I'm almost more inclined to use someone elses custom rom than to keep on adding updates to a base rom.

Call me paranoid, but I genuinely want to save my nand as much grief as I can.
These moviNANDs Samsung have used have questionable useable life, though I think the 16mb ones are the more problematic.

Not that it probably helps, but I just flashed the K12T Speedmod kernel via Odin.  Very simple and straight forward.  The longest part of it was downloading the file :-)  So, my first Speedmod kernel.  Now to try out the voodoo sound.

And now watching as my phone finishes booting up, I've finally got the phone recognised on the computer and the file I tried to send via Dropbox this afternoon has done it's thing.  Maybe I just needed to reboot my phone.

Anyway, it's another method, flash the rom you've generated, and then use Odin to get the kernel across.

The first time I installed speedmod, I assumed the volume would increase automatically. It didnt and so I bought "Louder Volume Hack" from the market. I realised later that I needed the Voodoo Control applications so you can make the adjustments! Speedmod at that time wasnt cooked into the rom so the related applications for Voodoo weren't cooked in as well. I havent seen the I900 kitchens lately so dont know if the Voodoo control applications are automatically cooked in. If they arent, grab them off the market.

The volume gain control is excellent. LVH = fail. It works but not very well.

Oh well.. another $5 down the drain Laughing

I already had the Voodoo Control app on my phone, but it was limited by the kernel.  I've checked it already and have heaps more options.  More than I can figure out what to do yet.  Mr Neets will help me there, he's the sound guru.

As for the Galaxy S kitchen, the Voodoo Control app is listed for inclusion if you want it.

Hey Neets, I see you've got the latest K12T Speedmod kernel running with Doc's 9.1.4 JS3, how's that running for you? Will probably flash that over soon just wanted a few thoughts on it. Better/worse/ average?. Currently running the standard K12R from the Kictchen

(Man this thread grow quick :p)

I read on one of the other forum's that if your using Odin then its better to remove the sim card and external SD card prior to flashing.
Have any of you removed the sim card and external SD card when flashing using CWM?
