Followed up again via email and got this reply:

We understand your concern and we apologized for the inconvenience.

We are in the testing phase of a newer version and we wanted to ensure that our smartphones/devices are at par with our competitors. Rest assured that we are actively developing and testing the latest update to ensure the best performance for your smartphones. However, all we can give for now is the assurance that we are doing our best to have it release as urgent as possible.

The text in the italics has a grey highlight around it, suggesting this is their generic copy & paste response, left typically vague.

1eStar: From my observation, if you want to be in control of your updates, choose a phone with an unlockable bootloader that's popular with developers. And funilly enough a Samsung flagship often fits that criteria. I don't think you can expect any OEM to support updates for more than 2-3 years. I just flashed Android 7.1.2 onto a 5 year old Sammy S2 recently.

Can you give me information on how you did that? I've recently resurrected my Samsung S2 after purchasing an extended battery from Ali Express. Still works mint, but I reckon it would be awesome to have Android 7 on it.

Well I brought a P9+ in Aug 2016 and the last security update was 1/11/16 and no Android 7 in sight.

My son has already replace his P8 with a Samsung S8.

Will probably do the same thing for my wife P8 lite shortly.

Huawei has lost good customers in us and as soon as I can justify it my P9+ will be getting relegated to my 10 year old and I will be getting either a Note 7 or a S8+

I'm sending the following email to fairgo. I'm not sure if they will even look in to it (haven't done this before) but id imagine if others make similar noises they prob would. Ill let you all know if i get any feedback.

Good afternoon,

I have a question or even maybe a story you could possibly look in to.

Just over a year ago when the Samsung Note7’s were recalled I purchased another cell phone from Harvey Normans.

I ended up paying approx. $2400 on two Huawei P9+ Smart Phones. $1200 each. One for myself and one for my wife.

Smart Phones require updates to keep them secure for the latest security patches just like a computer would. At the end of the day they are pocket computers.

Usually Microsoft for example would provide Windows Updates on a weekly basis for your computer.

Huawei seem to have stopped providing security updates. The last update I received for my phone was in November Last year.

Other companies such as Samsung release regular updates and support their devices for 2-3 years.

Myself and many others have been requesting updates for some time however they keep telling us they are coming. The general consensus is they are not as nothing has happened for a long time. My question to you is, where do consumers stand in relation to the consumers guarantees act. The expectation is that we are spending good money on a device, we feel the devices should be updated regularly, for the life of the device. I’d expect a device worth $1200 to be supported for at least 5 years.

Windows updates are monthly. You should check how often Google releases security updates. I'm not sure I'd point at this thread, the email can stand alone.

Ok, probably not monthly, but probably not weekly either. Just make sure you have it right, no point losing credibility unnecessarily :)

I just sent an email to the place of purchase seeing if they can shed some light.

I purchased the P9 as a flagship device before the P10 had been released and my handset is still under warranty. I doubt anyone covers a return to store warranty due to the manufacture dropping software support but I've become pretty pissed off at the fact that this phone has been obsoleted so quick.

Will post results if anyone is interested.

I didn't specifically ask in regards to why we aren't getting software updates or when we might (if any). That's pretty clear already.

I know I'm wasting my time but it took 2mins to try.

Well, I managed to lose my p9+ on Friday. Think i dropped when getting into the car, and didn't realise until I got home.

Now what phone to replace? Maybe a p10 ;)
