CrashAndBurn:

Sundr0p:

corksta: It’s not available on the Sony NZ website, but yes supposedly you can download it from other Sony regions and update your TV via USB. They don’t recommend it for obvious reasons, but it can be done.

has anyone here in NZ tried this ?  i image the difference might just be which ads get applied or something trivial like that

I have tried it myself. It doesn't work as the first error says incorrect region.

bummer, that's a shame ... was hoping it was as simple as say flashing a Samsung galaxy firmware which doesn't give a toss re region ....i guess we have to wait  :(

A shame that I recommended an (expensive) 4K OLED Sony A1 TV to my parents-in-law and there isn't an update - not even security update since they got it out of the box months ago.

I just bought KD85X8500F model and started watching this forum for update details.

Read online it's suspended roll out due to issues! I wish I have read that before I purchased and hang the TV on the wall, I would have tried the LG with WebOS :(

That’s just it, it’s irresponsible to base the device on android OS, but not have an achievable plan in place to deliver upgrades for at least known security vulnerabilities, let alone major feature upgrades.

It’s not just a Sony TV issue either. If you’re going to butcher native android OS, in favour of custom releases, then you need to stick by the commitment of support, and develop future releases.

Well if you look at the competition.
God knows how many security vulnerabilities are there in their code and LG/Samsung usually abandons their older lineups after a year when the new ones came out.

I am fairly happy with Sony's update policy. My 2016 x8500d got three major os updates (lollipop to marshmallow to nougat) and various security and performance enhancements throughout the years.

I must admit we use a Fire TV and Shield though our Bravia anyway, but I still feel that I'm missing out somehow. Also as I recently added a soundbar and the update (or the lack of) was I think mostly about that, I don't want anything buggered up there.

They have two firmware "versions" last time I checked
One for ATV1 which is 2015 to 2016 models
And ATV2 for the rest of the line up until 2018

Don't know about 2019 models.

Meh....not betting on it for my 2017 TV.

That said I have a $100 MiBox connected which is great value, fast (enough cf. my Shield), does all I need it to - and has had numerous updates over its lifetime. Highly recommended.

NEVER rely on a TV OS lasting beyond a coupe of years....

Anyone else get prompted for an update last night? I’ve got a 2015 KDL75-W850C it’s a fantastic TV - been really happy with it, pretty impressed it’s 4 years old and still getting updates!
