My girlfriend can't get this phone from thailand any more so wants to get one from somewhere else.

Looking at the options available it still seems that clove (UK) is still the best option?

is there duty payable in addition to the GST if it get's stung by customs, also is there customs processing fees to pay?

EDIT: Just checked customs website, it looks like there is no duty, but customs fee of $24.75 + maf fee of $12.50 brings total if stung by customs to ~$840, which is still cheaper than expert infotech?

Yeah I have bought a couple of phones from then now, they are very fast at sending the goods and very responsive. I haven't had any faults with the phones so have never had to deal with returns etc so can't say anything about that area but yes they seem to undercut cloves prices quite regularly... both seem good shops.

I see Endgadget are reporting big flaws in the GPS on the galaxy now, the word is spreading.
The amount of theads on xda about the "broken" gps is climbing each day.
Basically that the galaxy struggles to lock on, some will lock perfectly one day then wont be able to lock at all the next and its ability to keep locks on strong satellites is next to useless let alone on weaker sat signals.
Some are reporting even moving the phone a metre can upset it and make it lose locks....

the latest firmware doesn't fix it either and the user fixes out there have very mixed results and the people that seemed a bit clued up gps technology are saying they arent real fixes.

No one seems sure yet if its a hardware issue or firmware issue.....

At least its getting on big sites now like endgadget so samsung are sure to be well aware of the issue now..
Ive done quite a lot of testing now and can personally say its the most inaccurate gps ive ever seen in a phone.
quite frustrating...

Mine is just fine... Strange...

Even uploading tracks taken on run.gps the accuracy is fine when overlaid on Google Maps satelite view...

Anyone else seen PSX4Droid is now available in the market, just got it and about to have a go...

Yeah, this phone sounded great out of the gate: SAMOLED, 1GHz, awesome graphics processor, Android 2.1 upgrading to 2.2.. etc. Hearing about the lag issue was a surprise, considering the capabilities of the SOC; learning that the "fixes" only provided temporary relief was puzzling. Now the additional issues surrounding GPS and possibly also picture quality from the camera are definitely raising suspicion. It seems that while Samsung have the capability to put together an awesome hardware package they are sorely lacking the expertise to provide the software necessary to run the hardware at even an acceptable level of performance. With the money and global exposure Samsung is investing in the Galaxy S this could very well back fire on them and create a reputation of a manufacturer who pushes unfinished products in to the market. I understand from the blogshere that they already have a poor reputation for after sales support?

I am now glad I resisted the urge to rush in and grab one from overseas until the verdict from the early adopters was in . Not interested in handing over approximately $1000 NZD for a half baked product. To those who did take the plunge - you guys must be peeved. Sorry.

How are you converting pounds to NZD? According to Google 358GBP = around NZ$760 excl GST Why are your figures over 100 dollars short?

so 358 pounds = $765 pre GST/Customs and $897 after.

Would I say I'm still happy with the Samsung Galaxy S? Totally. Sure, the GPS is a bit hit or miss. Same as my N95 actually. Does it lag at times? Sure does. Can it run multiple applications, run games that would make a Desire cry, has a screen that puts an Evo to shame, has enough reception to make a phone call no matter how you hold it, runs whatever apps I approve not some company tells me to run, is super slim, has a good battery life, and is as future proof as a phone today can be, it sure does.

I recommend those people who are willing to buy this phone but worry about lag or GPS. Samsung's going to release 2.2 froyo firmware in korea sometime between end of this month or beginning of next month and we will see if these things get fixed or not.

Not peeved at all, .still like the phone and I will be buying a lot more phones early as I enjoy it.
I havent come accross a phone yet that doesnt have issues of some sort.

Screen rocks, nice and big and very bright, very accurate.
Lag is non existant on my phone.
GPS is a bit flakey but if its a firmware issue then that is easily taken care of.
Camera is just not that great under low light conditions with moving things but that was to be expected with no flash and a small lens. In daylight it takes suberb photos.

I'd still choose this phone over any other android phone out there, well any other phone actually.

Assuming you are going to put the purchase on a credit card, don't forget that the exchange rate that banks/credit card companies use is about the worst rate you can get and then they load it with a 2.25% fee. If you are comparing local versus overseas prices down to the last dollar, this can make quite a difference.

This is from a bank's website: "Foreign Currency Service Fee: 2.25% of the NZ dollar value of each foreign currency purchase, cash advance or returned purchase for Visa, American Express and MasterCard".

Shame about the GPS as that's my one must have/must work app.

Narrows the choice of next phone down to iphone4 and Desire really. Unless Samsung can sort this out quickly, but from reading articles about their previous product support it does make you wonder.
