Narrows the choice of next phone down to iphone4 and Desire really. Unless Samsung can sort this out quickly, but from reading articles about their previous product support it does make you wonder.

I have a garmin unit which I really like and use as my gps for travelling etc so its not a major concern to me about the gps in the phone but its annoying know that it doesn't work that well I guess.

As for the support, so far it looks like it is getting great support, there are new firmwares coming out very quickly, all leaked of course but it does mean that things are being worked on at a rapid rate and froyo is ready to roll in august for korea and shortly after for the rest.
I think because of the size of this launch on this product that you will see pretty good support on it, samsungs name is pretty much on the line with this phone because it has been rolled out in so many countries and there is some pretty big advertising going on with it overseas.

I found it a little amusing that in the UK they were poking fun of the iphone's reception problems in an advertisement and then offered free galaxie s's to some people that had issues with the iphone 4..
Seems a dangerous move considering the galaxy isn't exactly flaw free (yet). Maybe they know that future firmwares will fix the issues with the galaxy :).

Even uploading tracks taken on run.gps the accuracy is fine when overlaid on Google Maps satelite view...

Anyone else seen PSX4Droid is now available in the market, just got it and about to have a go...

Mine is also fine, although I used the XDA forums GPS fix, because it was about 100m off, now it's accurate to within a few metres

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

It's all well and good having a separate GPS device - I also have a Navman which I no longer use as my TomTom app in my iPhone 3g works perfectly.

I love the look of both the Desire and the Galaxy, and really like what Google are doing - for instance i use Google Apps Premier for my business and would love phone that integrates with them better than the iphone does. But the new phone must also have GPS navigation that works out of the box. that right there is a deal breaker for me.

Yeah fair enough if that is what you need it for. I wouldn't write if off completely though as it could just be a firmware/driver issue. From reading the multiple threads on xda it looks like a bit of both.

1) The hardware sensor is just not that sensitive compared to a lot of other phones, people have shot many photos now of the phone sitting side by side with other phones with gpstest displayed and you can easily see the galaxy just doesn't pick up the satellites as strongly or lock onto some that the other phones have. That being said, it should still be enough for decent gps navigation if they fix the firmware/driver side and the locking issue ....

2) it looks like there is a firmware/driver issue in that it doesn't keep locks on satellites very well and that it can completely fail to get any lock sometimes, people are saying that they have to disable gps in the settings for 30 seconds then re enable it and that starts the gps going again, so obviously driver issues at work here..

For those that are saying they have no problems with the gps, run gpstest, go for a drive, see if it stays locked onto satts etc, see how many green bars you get on your trip. I think you will see what i mean.
Then try taking it for a walk around the block in your hand, I bet it will really struggle :)

I just went for a drive using co-pilot today and it worked perfectly, couldnt fault it, yesterday it had me sometimes in streets that were parallel to where i was... before bouncing back again.

That's brilliant. Hadn't used the GPS (Co-Pilot)for three weeks, tried this morning after reading this and still had 'no signal' after waiting ten minutes, i.e. not even one satellite showing.

Made the changes set out in the above tutorial, rebooted and turned on Co-Pilot - and had a strong fix within 10 seconds.

Has anyone else tried this fix? Does it really resolve the GPS issue?

it might help you get a lock faster but has nothing to do with the strength of the sensors or whether it maintains a lock. Different issues. Even with getting the lock, some say it works, some say it doesn't help at all and makes things worse some say it just makes it better because it resets the gps and the driver etc..

There seem to be new "fixes" posted almost daily now but none of them seem to really fix it for everyone and I think a real fix wont come without samsung doing it and fixing the drivers/firmware.

I made this XDA forums GPS fix to my Galaxy S over the weekend and it made a huge lock speed difference immediately. I noticed in the menu where this fix is made that here is a box for, apparently, setting the accuracy/resolution. It was set on 50 m when I opened it and I changed it to 10 m. Will that actually do anything or have any effect?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Just tried this on a trip to the shops using GPS Test Plus and it was fine, sats in use varied from 7 to 8 but it never lost lock and the reported accuracy stayed at "16 feet". I think one of the complaints is that it never uses more than 8 sats but I don't think I've ever seen my dedicated GPS use more than that either. I haven't used any of the "GPS fixes", but I am using the JM2 firmware.

That is good news for you, enjoy it, it might not last going by many peoples comments on xda :)

What do you mean by not losing lock also?, I am talking about its inability to keep a lock on satellites , eg it drops a satellite then picks it up again a few seconds later etc, if I have a nexus next to it, the nexus basically keeps the same satellites there with the galaxy it drops them and then picks them up again etc etc.
I get grey bars on some satellites with apparently good signal levels then it drops them only to pick them up later on and lock them but then drops them again.. seems a circus..

are you talking about losing lock on individual satellites or losing a lock on the location?

Yes I mean overall lock on the position. A coloured bar on a satellite just means that it's being used by the GPS to calculate the current position, not that the individual satellite is "locked". Different GPS chips use different algorithms to select which sats to use so it's not that unusual to see the set change as the car moves I think. As long as it still has the correct position I don't really care.

Well yes in my case it seems to have problems locking in on any satellite. (my definition of lock is using a satellite for more than just a few seconds)
Hopefully its not a chipset issue as then it can't be fixed, from what I have read its a new broadcom chipset that just came out this year so anything is possible.
Seems t-mobile have asked samsung to explain the gps problems as they are being swamped by users complaning now...

There is a clockwork recovery for the samsung now including nandroid of course.

Nice way to quickly backup your entire phone including the OS etc.

Definitely airsure you have better chances, with companies like dhl and fedex you are almost certain to pay customs fee, brokerage fees + gst.

Companies like dhl and fedex send the details of the incomming package to nz customs before its even in the country and then will contact you for all those payments before its even in the country. They do this for speed so there is nothing to slow it down once it arrives in NZ, it means you will get stung pretty much every time but it will go through fast.

airsure don't do this but I guess nz customs randomly check what is coming in and if they find one that needs gst paid etc it will be held until fees are paid I believe.

As for speed, airsure are pretty quick anyway, their "tracking" is non existant though, all they tell you is when it is on its way.. next update is it arrives at your door :).
