Hi Shrapnel,
Did you download the JVB firmware from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901 or from samfirmware site?
Another question, JVB bootloader is different to Froyo so one will have to flash the bootloader version of JVB?
Is repartition also required?
Thanks

No, I got it for samfirmware but only because it wasn't on that thread yet. And yes, you need the bootloaders if you haven't used GB before or replaced them since flashing GB, explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011701 If you want to check if a .tar file has bootloaders it will have boot.bin and sbl.bin inside it. Repartition is explained on the thread, it's optional and it has the instructions for both ways on the thread. Pretty much everything I've said is on the thread if you read down a bit. Good luck!
Neets:
I haven't read the thread Shrapnel provided. When I flashed the bootloaders there was NO repartion required. Using Odin the zip file went into PDA. Takes about 10 seconds.
Then I flashed the ROM I cooked in the betakitchen. It's in the betakitchen becuase it's still got some bugs.
Do I think JVB is better than JS8. Not really. Others have been overwhelmed with their experience but I havne't noticed anything special about it. The only real difference I've seen is the Menu | Applications is different. As for normal use, it seems the same to me.
I wouldn't encourage or discourage going to JVB
Neets: I took my brave pills last night and for the first time since the earthquake did not leave my phone charging overnight.
The battery life on JVB is really good!
The details on the phone are improved too. Not only do you see the usual, but any apps that you've been using also show up (I presume this didn't show, I never saw it before myself). And then there's the little graph at the top too.
I've also go a screen shot of details you see in the Menu | Applications area which has changed a little in Gingerbread.

The other thing I did today was to put the Best Skin on my phone. I'm going to reserve judgement until tomorrow when overnight I'm hoping the remainder little air bubbles will have dried out, and the feel of the skin will have smoothed out. It certainly feels rubbery right now, and not so easy to glide my finger over the screen for swyping.
I also thought the back would never come right. After all the back of the phone is curved and I wasn't convinced the back would sit and stay (sounds like a dog) but it's sorted itself out. I've just got the little side bits (Silver boarder) from the front to do but figure I'll wait till tomorrow when I decide if I like it (the front) or not.
Oh, screen capture isn't working on JVB. Wasn't sure if you knew or not. I had to download another app to take the captures which worked fine, but wasn't nearly as simple as the inbuilt screen capture of Froyo.

I've been running various JVB roms, but have settled for now on juwe's one - seems fast and stable. With the much hyped crt off anim and extended off menu. Running the crysis sensation theme and the CF 3.1 recovery (might try the beta 6 of damianGTO's kernel soon).
The skin you just put on will take a day or two to harden. My screen got better after a few days, no bubbles in it at all (although I was obsessive about removing them also). It's also very silky to the touch - if your fingers are dry. Feels like a hard vinyl, but polished like glass. (wet/sweaty fingers tend to grab).
My one still shows NO scratches on the screen protector. NONE. It's been months. Past screen protectors, including on past smart phones, have always shown some minor scratches or rough patches after a while and i'd have to change them every few months. This one - nothing. as clear as when I ut it on, and if anything I use my fingers on this MORE than previous phones (some of which had a slide out keyboard). No marks, even on the keyboard area.
So persevere.

fatjoez: Why are people, like the person above me, still using UGJL2 modem?
It's actually quite rubbish compared to the newer modems
Friendly suggestion for people to upgrade to DVJP9 (backed by Telstra australia, also using 850mhz)

fallen: Took the plunge, installed stock JVB and Chainfire Kernel, now to decide on which custom rom to install. Those of you who are running JVB, any recommendations on a custom rom.
