Hi guys, im considering going back to the mate 20 pro, i would imagine after all these months the software updates would have made the software less make-you-wanna-kill-yourself-y ! any major issues anyone is having with the device now software wise? 

Not sure what specific part of the software you disliked so can't comment if it is better now... I do know the last update was in February (with January security update, plus a few (very few) fixes/enhancements in the changelog.

I've been daily-driving the Mate 20 Pro since launch, may as well share my thoughts. Long read since it's me, lots of comparative stuff. TL;DR it's a great phone.

 

• The processor and performance are excellent

   

  • M20P was the first true next-gen phone of '2019', leapfrogging all the competition in 2018 thanks to Huawei's Kirin processor cycles, offering 7nm Cortex A76 cores well in advance of anything else - massive advantage for those who want the best and fastest in Android-land
  • They're still ahead of everything else in NZ for processor grunt, including Samsung, who offer 8nm A75 cores in the local Exynos 9820 models - it'll take until Xiaomi or OnePlus for the first Snapdragon 855 devices to land, and longer again for the first 855 devices that have 'parity' with the top-end flagship featureset (wireless charging + water resistance + 1440p), so the Mate 20 Pro remains at the top for now
  • That said, for many use-cases flagship mobile SoCs have been 'good enough' for a while, so YMMV here - I'd take a downgrade in CPU and particularly GPU for an upgrade in other areas I care more about
  • Performance in practice is excellent, particularly web browsing

 

•  I was initially much more into the regular flavour Mate 20 than the Pro, the Pro won me over

   

  •  I loved the Mate 9, skipped the Mate 10 due to front fingerprint scanner
  •  The Mate 20 felt like 'Huawei makes a Huawei phone', the Pro 'Huawei makes a Samsung phone', but it turns out Huawei is really good at making 'Samsung phones' so there you go
  •  Glad I ended up with the Pro in the end, its bumped specs and featureset are excellent and the formfactor is great

 

•  Battery life is 'very good' but in my use pretty much on par with the meagre-on-paper 3300mAh in my beloved LG V30 that I was finally convinced to shift from - the V30 has stupendously good battery life too, as have my past daily drivers of choice had, the actual in-use longevity is much the same here

   

  •  The real killer feature is the ridiculous superfast charging that we've seen make an appearance here and in devices from the OPPO/Vivo/OnePlus BBK triumvirate - this is a serious next-gen feature that makes a genuine difference in daily use, wow
  •  Remains to be seen what these massive wattages will do to long-term battery degradation, although the TUV certification gives me more optimism than I'd have without it - I'd like to see the great adaptive Qnovo tech used by LG and Sony tackle ~50W charging
  •  The stonkingly fast burst charging + convenient wireless charging top-ups have seen me cease charging overnight and just burst in the evenings / mornings as needed
  • Seriously this thing goes from ~30% to 75% in under 15mins, it's incredible

 

•  Real 3D face unlock (not 'just the front camera with maybe IR,' but the mini Kinect in iPhones X/Xs/Xr/Mate 20 Pro/upcoming LG G8s) is amazing and I find the M20P's to be better than Apple's in use

   

  •  I do not like in-display fingerprint scanners at all, they're all rubbish in my view, terrible regressive technology in the name of shiny-new, great for marketing and dismal in use - and the Mate 20 Pro's is much better than most of the others I've tried (pretty much all of them at this point)

     

    •  This is going to write off a bunch of 2019 devices for me, I just can't stand the current in-display fingerprint tech
    •  I'd sooner use an older device with a fast capacitive fingerprint scanner on the rear than one which only has in-display for serious biometrics
  •  3D face unlock means I can skip using fingerprint for screen unlock and just use it sparingly for misc. app authentication requirements
  •  Coupling it with raise to wake is killer, just pick up the phone and bam, unlocked
  •  Options are nice!

 

• The screen is good

   

  •  I preferred the LG panel to the BOE panel, but the regrettable - and truly admirably resolved - green screen biz was what it was
    

     

    • Serious props to Huawei for the way in which they resolved that
  •  Hiding the notch comes highly recommended, quite inoffensive and easily forgotten when hidden
  •  I like the extra-tall aspect ratio much more than I expected to coming from notchless 6" 18:9
  •  The device is wide enough to type on comfortably with two thumbs/one thumb + one forefinger, this is clearly the form factor that the ultra-premium market is trending towards as smartphones are refined into a singular design

     

    •  Plenty more potential for other form factors mind you, but the ol' candybar is getting pretty close to 'done' in my mind - there is a big sea of sameness coming in 2019 for better or worse

 

•  I generally like EMUI

   

  •  I particularly enjoyed EMUI 5/8 on the Mate 9, moreso than EMUI 9 on the Mate 20/Pro

     

    • EMUI 9 has brought some regressions that are a little irritating - changing the display size in dev options/standard display settings does not affect the notification drop-down or Huawei's own launcher, which means annoyingly large widgets that can't be resized - looking at you, Google At A Glance, which should be 5x1 but is 5x2
  •  You can disable HiBoard with ADB and it'll enable the Google Now Feed in the stock launcher(!)
  •  You can also disable HiVision with ADB and it'll remove the HiVision icon from the camera app
  •  It is mostly unobtrusive, visually pleasant, and can be themed - you can even use a third party icon pack of your choice throughout the whole system
  •  The inconsistency between the shape of stock apps (squircle) and third party apps (circle) irks me, a theme can at least turn them all into circles - I very much enjoy the stock Neon icons aside from the inconsistent shape
  •  I value adding a fourth soft key to drop down the notification panel from any screen, HTC used to offer this, LG still does
  •  Since the P20, Huawei have hidden a bunch of their best features away deep under settings menus, e.g.

     

    •  Turn on 'Natural Tone' under Settings/Display/Colour & eye comfort
    •  Turn on 'Darken Interface Colours' under Settings/Battery
  •  The gestures are not very good and quite slow/unresponsive, recommend taking a look at Xiaomi's MIUI for gestures done right on Android - OnePlus and Samsung too, I'll even give a nod to OPPO here (about the only thing I have found to like in ColorOS unfortunately)
  •  The always-on display is basic and poor with zero options, doesn't show third-party notifications, and despite my love of AOD in LG and Samsung devices, I keep it off here

     

    • You can't turn off the battery percentage - I personally dislike seeing battery percentages when I'm not specifically looking for them

 

•  Cardinal sin - Huawei have implemented a system wherein OTA updates are delivered based on the 'region' of your particular device and the SIM card present in it with no easy way of sideloading updates from another region for those who care for update parity with other markets

   

  • Particularly frustrating given how locked down their devices have become / sideloading results in CTS profile mismatches which break Google Pay et al / updates for the 'AUSC636' region of NZ units are now beholden to testing by some of the ghastly and legendarily slow Australian telcos
  • This has resulted in users travelling internationally, inserting an international SIM, being greeted with an update, and finding that update breaks Google Pay - there's an example in this very thread - so clearly some kinks to iron out
  • This is a stark contrast to the rapidly-updated open market APAC no-AUS 'C636' Mates sold in NZ prior

     

    •  Although be thankful you do not have an Optus AU single-SIM Mate 20 Pro which is still stuck on the 122 software it launched with last year, ye gods
  •  While I do understand the device vendor (and telco) desire to lock down software regionally to control distribution/grey market flows of product (this is primarily what these sorts of lockdowns are for), this hurts the biggest and most enthusiastic fans of leading brands like Huawei and I hope they implement some kind of global beta programme to counter it/reach parity with Apple/OnePlus/Xiaomi who offer this
  •  Got the last .183 update on my birthday at least, thanks Huawei!

 

•  The triple camera system is brilliant, versatile, and clearly the future of smartphone photography

   

  •  While I admire what Google's computational chops can accomplish with one lens in the Pixels, they are nowhere near the swiss army knife of tricks that a standard/telephoto/ultrawide layout can offer
  •  Ultrawide is my favourite moving from LG, I'm glad other brands have seen fit to nick that particular feature, it can make even dull subjects and scenes look dynamic and exciting, and captures the 'experience' of a location in ways more traditionally framed phone photos do not
  •  Camera needed some updates to shine and I'm looking forward to more - and what Huawei do next here
  •  Camera app itself is pretty good, although I again find myself missing the Mate 9's software implementation, particularly for aperture mode
  •  Night mode is still incredible, Huawei were a year ahead of the competition when they launched it on the P20 Pro
  •  Have a dig into what's possible after taking shots, you can pull off clever tricks like isolating one colour in an image
  •  The best 'AI' feature to my mind is far and away the automatic portrait mode - point the camera at a recognisable face and it'll kick in and blur the background - while the edge detection (hair etc) is just kind of 'ok' no matter what brand or phone you pick, this kicking in automatically instead of requiring the operator select portrait mode is game-changingly great

 

• Misc

   

  • Haptic feedback is quite disappointing, I am a huge fan of the linear actuators employed by Meizu, LG, and also in the Pixel 3XL

     

    • This, at least in the case of Meizu and LG, comes in part from a company called Immersion - I believe advanced haptics are a significant part of the future of device interaction, see also the Nintendo Switch and its HD Rumble
    •  Good thing I have a smartwatch or else I'd miss a bunch of notifications
  •  Phone calls & reception are good
  •  Stereo speakers are good, watch out for blocking the USB port as it's actually the bottom speaker too - but this can be handy if you need to muffle unexpectedly-loud sound!
  •  I wish there was a better way to lock the screen without pressing the power button, adding the stock 'screen lock' widget is functional but firmly in the 'just ok' category vs. OnePlus and LG and Xiaomi who have double tap to sleep/wake
  •  No headphone jack is still a perioidic annoyance
  •  IR blaster is occasionally useful and nice to have
  •  Dual SIM as standard is neat, the double-sided card slot is also neat
  •  I use, love, and recommend the Spigen Rugged Armor cases on as many of my daily drivers as I can, Mate 20 Pro included

     

    •  Also have the UAG Plasma base model - I loved UAG in their earlier days and enjoy their cases aesthetically, but I'm not super fond of the kinda greasy handfeel of the Plasma
  •  The Mate 20 Pro is more expensive in AU than in NZ
  •  I feel sorry for US consumers who don't have access to this device and are primarily left to choose between Samsung and Apple - both of which have great featuresets, but there is some truly boundary-pushing and unique competition here from Huawei, the Mate 20 Pro is an incredible feat of engineering and convergence - despite ~niggles, all devices have niggles, there is no perfect phone no matter how spendy you get

One another annoyance your forgot to mention is the lack of availability of extended storage. They created NM Card for extended storage and failed to release them in all the markets that actually sells the phone. 

I tried very hard in Hong Kong to find one and could not get them. Aliexpress sells them but I really want something local for warranty etc. 128GB is too small when you take videos a lot.

For my use-case 128GB is a sweet spot, but it's a valid point. I'm hopeful it will make sense for NM cards to launch in NZ as and when there are more devices which support the format.
