Both work for me, but Navigon gave me erorrs. I'd always kept a copy of Navigon's app on my internal SD. When I restored TB I didn't restore Navigon, rather I ran it from the copy on my sd.

Come to think of it, that's also what I did for Root Explorer. But I always run the install file before I even take a look at TB.

So my suggestion is that if you've got the apk files on your phone, run them and don't restore them using TB or MyBackup - whatever you use.

As I say, both of these apps work for me, but on reflection neither were restored, rather installed from their respective apk files.

My CSC at the moment is set to XEE, could that be a reason why Navigon isn't working?

I'd rather scratch a screen protector than ruin a $1000 phone..

I've had my SGS for 9 months or so and have no scratches on the glass. I don't use a screen protector and the phone is usually in my pocket with my keys.

I've also had: sand in my pocket, sawdust in my pocket, lint in my pocket, metal shavings and it's been fine. I have to remember to stop keeping my phone in my pocket while doing work round the house though, annoying having to remove the back and blow it all out

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Nope still no luck. Copied the *.apk files to the external SD card. Uninstalled the the programs and re installed from the copied *.apk files, still get force closures.

yep, had to flash back to v10 of Perka's rom and have the same problem with Navigon myself. It was working and now after this flash it's not. Root Explorer is fine though.

lofreq: there are tons of guides on how to use odin if you just search a bit, but post up here if you have questions before you start and i will be happy to help, i just did this in the last few days once again so its fresh in my head

go download the JVB rom with bootloaders, then get odin 1.7, then go backup all your stuff if you dont want to lose it. ideally use Titanium backup, if youre not worried then even better. i sync all my contacts etc to google so nothing ever gets lost on the phone

let us know how you get on and ask any questions before you start

lofreq, only question I have initially is in regard to the modem. I'm using JL2 at the moment for XT. I'm guessing the modem supplied with the download file will not be XT compatible, so will I need to make modifications to JP9 like you did to get it to work on XT ?

Also, I expect it doesn't matter whether I download the NEE or XEE file ?

Correct, the modem supplied doesn't work with XT, you can flash a 850mhz modem (eg JL2, JP9) with Odin by directing the 'Phone' section in odin to the .tar file you downloaded. You can get the Odin JL2 on the second post of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1233815 , I couldn't find the JP9 odin version but I'm sure someone else will point it out.

ok so, timely discussion here. ive been testing out the JP9 modem and surprise surprise, it refuses to switch to 850mhz no matter what i do. it has 850mhz deselected by default in the service code screen ( *#2263* ) but even when i manually go in to select it (so it shows an asterisk beside it) it still doesnt switch. you can even make it such that 850mhz is the ONLY one with an asterisk beside it, and the phone will STILL remain firmly on 2100mhz.

some modems have different tolerances as to when they switch, ie they allow the signal to drop quite low before searching for another band... but in this case i drove over the shore obviously out of range of the 2100mhz range, and instead of switching, i just got no 3g service at all. this is exactly the behaviour i found with JPE, JPK modems etc, they all support 850mhz on paper, but in practise it doesnt work. the phone never switches over to 850mhz.

to top it off, i tried to switch back to UGJL2 which i had on my internal memory in ready-to-flash CWM format - only to find that now im on CWM 3.0.0.5, you CANT flash old packages any longer as the compatibility/format of those archives is no longer supported!!! god damn thing. so ive had to wait till i got home now to re-flash using Odin.

so long story short: dont worry about the modem that gets put on when you swap to a different rom. let it install whatever the hell it wants - once the rom is installed, simply pop back into Odin and load JUST the modem you want (in this case, the Odin flashable version of UGJL2) into the "Phone" section of Odin, and just hit Go. it will flash only the modem over what you have installed, and reboot the phone for you. once back up and running you can confirm the new modem has been loaded by popping into Settings>about phone and you'll see the Baseband now showing the new modem version.

HOT TIP: technically you dont need special odin versions of modem packages to install them. any CWM flashable zip package contains the relevant "modem.bin" file in the zip, in the folder called 'updates'. simply pop into the zip file, go into the 'updates' folder, rip out the 'modem.bin' file, then jump into Odin, and load that modem.bin file directly into the 'Phone' section, and flash. presto, youre done :)

i just reflashed UGJL2 back on right now. and things are working again as normal. meanwhile can someone else on XT confirm that no new modems work on 850 on xt so far other than UGJL2 or is it something im doing cus for the life of me i cant get these other damn modems to work

ps: GPS was also BS with JP9. sitting on my couch i fired up GPS and sat there waiting to get signal. nothing happened for over 15mins. held it up to the window pointed at the sky, after 2mins it picked up one satellite, at like below 20 SNR. however right this second after reflashing JL2, sitting in the same place i got 5 satellites in 30 seconds and GPS lock at around 45seconds. as far as im concerned right now JL2 is the modem to beat on XT in NZ.

Good tip there lofreq, didn't know that you could flash the modem.bin without it being packed as a .tar file.

Sorry, didn't explain that very well; you flash your choice of modem after you have flashed to 2.3.3 as lofreq said.

An update is on the market (version 3.5.4), its no longer free, ~$72. I tried to update the software using Navigon Fresh via PC says that my version (3.5.1) is up to date...

I've just upgraded to 3.5.4 via the market for free. Had to do the Market Enabler trick of course. I'm still on Froyo, does the ME trick work on GB? I have also previously purchased one of the packs (Safety or something) so maybe that made a difference. The release notes say there is a fix for GB in 3.5.4.

How big was the d/l? I'll give it a go if it wont eat all my mobile data - might be better to wait until I get home. Do you have the ME code again?

Ya fix something, ya break something.

The good news...
That annoying truncation of the TBT instruction has finally been cured, so now you get to hear the street name you're about to turn into when listening to music on your SGS.

The bad news...
The app no longer reduces the music volume when the TBT voice is speaking, so you'll need to crank the voice volume to make it heard. Poo.
Also, they still haven't fixed the pronunciation of Rd (arr-dee), Ave (ah-vay), Saint in its St form is pronounced "Street" and some others I can't remember right now.

This is so close to being the perfect GPS app but just misses. Especially like the fact that it doesn't need data to work. Good on ya Navigon.

I previously filed bug reports on the truncation issue, the mis-pronunciation and a couple of obvious incorrect instructions to both Navigon and the map company Navteq (owned by Nokia I think...). Don't for a moment think the fixed truncation is in any way down to my bug fix reports, but I'm going to moan about the mispronunciation thing again. If we don't b1tch about it they'll never find out.

Hopefully the others here who use the app will do the same.

Anyhoo, this update's a move in the right direction.
