Should I be changing the Kernel?

Is that stock Gingerbread? I'm running Perka's rom wihich by default had ChainFire's kernel, which had root included. If you're using stock I suspect it doesn't have root access, I can't see why Samsung would provide that since usually it voids warranty.

So I suggest flashing ChainFire's kernel - if nothing else it'll give you root access which you'll need for some of your apps anyway. He also has some nice apps included which will save you having to reboot to recovery to do the likes of converting from RFS to Ext4 and whatnot.

As for clearing the cache. I meant for you to press the Menu button, scroll down to Applications. Select Manage Applications, then click the ALL tab. Scroll til you find one of the applications, then press the Clear Cache button.

JVB - installed.
JL2 modem - installed.
CF-Root - installed.
Apps, etc - restored.

Going like a charm. No known problems, yet.

Thanks to those who provided assistance.

Wasn't nearly as daunting as I expected.

In case people are not aware, I did have to reinstall APN settings, so keep this in mind in you are having problems with data / texts, etc.

have you converted to ext4 filesystem or still stock rfs?

and are you using stock browser and launcher?

fallen: How are you folks finding the battery life on XWJVB, I am finding that the battery life isn't as good as it was on Froyo, used to get 48 hours on normal use. Guess its early days for XWJVB.

still too early to tell, i think you will need a few discharge/recharge cycles... im on about 34 hours with 65% remaining, low usage tho - however i saw a drastic change in idle drain when i went from stock kernal to damianGTO's kernel, it improved dramatically. so who knows...

Sadly the bubbles multiplied and instead of 2 that I didn't successfully get out in the middle of the screen, I've now got 4!

If I'd known they wouldn't come out (which differs to the advice in the YouTube video provided for guidance) I'd have persevered and got the suckers out ;-)

Also, did you wet both sides, or at least not worry if the side in contact with the glass had water on it? The YouTube video showed wetting the side strips and sliding your finger down to get rid of excess water so it was my belief that it was ok to have water under the side in contact with the phone (which would be released as you run the credit card over it). But I swear there's little rainbow stuff going on which is quite obvious with a white background like a web page.

Yes, I had water there. Or, actually water and baby soap (as required). A fair bit too, enough that the screen protector was basically floating on it - e.g. could be moved and slid around. I sure polished that glass screen clean with several cloths... IN the bathroom, and then covered it.

I carefully removed any water that escaped the edges of the screen protector with a microfiber cloth so it wouldn't get inside the phone.

I did all of this in the bathroom with the shower going - the steam removed any dust particles - which normally plague this sort of project. It took me about an hour. I re-applied it a dozen times (perfectionist).

I used a credit card to cover the screen and then drew that back slowly as I applied the screen protector, which only had the bare minimum of it's sticky side exposed to the air at a time to reduce the dust factor. A three handed operation but I managed with two.

The result was pretty close to flawless. Aside from one or two dents from factory on the screen protector (only noticeable with a magnifying glass and a strong light and patience), there are no bubbles, mis-alignments, or otherwise. If I had another decent camera i'd upload a pic.

I did the same for the back as well. It's flawless too. That's why I reccomend them so highly - yes, it's tricky getting it on but once it's on, I doubt you'll need another for years.

I might order another. This will annoy me the way it is, but I can see it wont take long for you to get used to the differnet rubbery feel to the screen. And I was finding that my screen was getting grubby, even with using a micro fibre cloth to clean it, it was getting a bit of a greasey build up. This may help.

Mine gets fingerprints on it, but the protector seems to somehow reduce them.

Also, did you use a really bright light to look at the screen pre putting the cover on? I used my head torch. Interesting the little patter to the screen (beneath I suppose). You certainly can't detect it without the bright light.

I had a 100 watt incandscent bulb.

Your bubbled screen protector is likely all right. Peel it off, wash it in filtered water with some of the soap until flawless, rinse a dozen times with clean water, and re-apply. Be careful not to scrub or otherwise remove the sticky glue on it, just rinse. I had to do it myself many times. It's not hard, just time consuming.

I think that on average, to get a perfect result, this should take about 45 to 60 minutes. Depends if you are a perfectionist.

Same here, initially it was bad, but once the battery calibrates it is great, usually get about 2 days and a few hours out of it with calling/gtalk/texting and some light internet, usually just over a day with heavy calling and internet usage/music

Your display seems really high?
Mine goes:
2 hours 10 days(charging now)
maps 30%
Wifi 24%(might be too hgh?)
standby 20%
display 9%
idle 8%
Android OS 4%
Android system 3%

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

If you use your display at all it drains the most out of anything. typically my display uses 90% of my battery as I have it on for 3+hrs a day.

What is the consensus (if one exists) on the best modem to use on VF here in New Zealand.

I flashed Darky's v10.0 RC5.3 the other night, seems to be going OK even if it is a beta. Firmware version is 2.3.3.

I used the recommended modem when installing, JQ1.

Quadrant score a bit on the average side, 960.

Still on stock rfs - what's the difference, is one better than the other.

Flip-flopping between launcher pro and go launcher.....haven't made up my mind yet as to which one I prefer, although leaning slightly in favour of go launcher at this stage, has more functionality.

that score seems normal for stock JVB, i got about the same so thats cool

EXT4 filesystem is faster than RFS, also just as safe. i converted mine using EXT4 tool from CF-Root's thread and got up to 1500ish scores.

not as fast as EXT2 as that doesnt use journaling which some say is riskier but only if youre in the habit of ripping the battery out in mid-processing... haha
i must say tho that despite the 900-1000 scores, i found stock JVB to be very very smooth... then when i installed damianGTO's kernel the battery life improved heaps...

everyones working on updates so its only going to get better, i for one am waiting for hardcore to get his GB version of speedmod fully complete as i found his kernels to be the best on froyo
