Richard7666: I have another question, has anyone used the Rom Kitchen? What is a good combo for an NZ phone (what do you guys use), and do I need to install this Clockwork Mod thing? It's all rather confusing.

I flashed Darkys with Odin and their forum had very comprehensive tutorials.

you'll get a guide on how to flash a Doc Rom.

My details are in my signature, but I'm not currently running a Doc rom, but Perka's, who is a moderator of the romkitchen channel.

I still recommend Doc's work. I'm just helping out with some testing and whatnot with Perka's rom.

You'll probably find the majority of people here use Doc's Roms - the only difference really in terms of NZ options is the modem for Telecom or VF/2Degrees. . . . .BUJP5 is the best for VF/2Degrees, and I think UGJL2 is still the best for Telecom (or not far off).

You don't HAVE to use CWM, but it is easier for applying updates, and for Hardcore's kernel (my personal favourite), you need to boot into it to apply lagfix options etc.

The setup in my signature is as good as I've seen my SGS.

I'd recommend you flash Hardcore's kernel via Odin to get you set up with CWM, and then download a Doc Rom, and flash it from CWM.

Like nofam said the easiest way to get Doc's rom is to first flash Hardcore's Speedmod K13E via Odin v1.7 (with phone in download mode) and then afterwards boot into recovery and flash a Doc rom from there (there's an option called install update from zip).

I got my brother to buy an i9000 and as soon as he got it I easily flashed a Doc rom this way.

Thanks. I'm currently going through hell with this phone, even on stock it force closed all the time, now on Darkys it freezes requiring a hard reset every half hour or so.

Could it possibly be a hardware fault? Faulty RAM or something?

I've got the Telecom Galaxy S which currently has 2.1 on it.

I've been trying to update it to 2.2 which I understand is available regionally in New Zealand but when I connect it to my PC and run Kies it says 'The version of the device cannot be updated'
Will I have to do this another way then?
also wondering if it would be difficult to get 2.3 on it

Yeah I'd be inclined to send it back too - just remember you need to get the completely stock firmware back on it, as you've currently invalidated your warranty by rooting/flashing etc.

The message "The version of the device cannot be updated" generally applies to phones which have non-standard roms for their region. In which case you have two options:

Reset your phone's rom to standard by locating it on the web (google "samsung firmware" or do a search in this thread) and flashing it with CWM or Odin, taking care to ensure it's the NZ XT version...

or...

Just flash a recommended 2.2 or 2.3 XT-friendly rom and ignore Kies completely. Many here do. XDA Developers site has good info as do many people who post here.

I'd go the latter direction but YMMV.

to upgrade your phone, you need 3 things:
a KERNEL (like the hardware control layer that really determines the performance of your phone)
a ROM (the software setup of the phone, the theme, the app optmisations, all the software side of the phone)
and a MODEM (the file that dictates how the phone's antennas and recievers interact with the celltowers and the frequencies of your carrier)

each of these can be downloaded as seperate ".tar" files from the web, and your primary resource should be XDA developers forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665
this forum lists all the currently actively developed custom roms for you to research and test. rule of thumb, if its on the first page, then its being actively developed, and is "fresh". i wouldnt bother with anything on page 3 and further. so you dont need to read a million threads.

the threads for roms are prefixed with [ROM]
the threads for kernels are prefixed [KERNEL]

its easy to read the thread names to see if they pertain to 2.2 froyo or 2.3 gingerbread. then READ THE FIRST POST THOROUGHLY as this is what the developer constantly updates and tells you everything about their rom or kernel. then go on to read the thread, skimming thru the last 40 pages of each should hopefully give you a good idea of the recent mods of the rom, and any user "complaints" or issues.

it lists all the wcdma 850mhz modems released, not ALL will work on XT but like i say below, the ones you need (UGJL2 and UGKC1) are on here, downloadable as CWM2 or CWM3 flashable zips

- what the hell is CWM2 and CWM3?
CWM is "ClockworkModRecovery" - its like a pre-boot shell that your phone can boot into, to control kernel settings, and also "flash" updates that people have packaged into zip packages.

in CWM you can flash new KERNELS, ROMS and MODEMS. the basic idea is, you download the KERNEL you want to try, the ROM you want, the MODEM you want, as ZIP files, and save them on the ROOT of your INTERNAL SD storage space. then reboot into CWM, and the text menu will allow you to "choose" each zip file, to "flash" them one at a time. generally youd flash one at a time and reboot in between to ensure all is well, before rebooting into CWM to flash the next.
many ROM packages INCLUDE their own recommended KERNEL, so if the ROM includes a KERNEL you like, then all you need to do is flash the ROM, no need to flash another KERNEL over the top. however in almost all cases, the included package will have the wrong MODEM for XT. so you will need to (at some stage) reboot into CWM and flash the apprpriate modem back in, so you re-gain XT network connectivity

most froyo kernels and roms were all packaged in a CWM2 type archive, so if you load a kernel that supports
CWM version 2.x.x.x (it will tell you when you boot into it) then you can only flash CWM2 packages. think of it as an older setup of CWM, like windows 98
when they introduced gingerbread, CWM got updated to CWM3. CWM3 does not like flashing packages designed for CWM2, so when you try, it may show you an error stating exactly that. if you go to gingerbread, you will need to only flash CWM3 compatible packages. hence, when you go to the modem thread, you will see packages for both CWM2 and CWM3

to get these 3 things on your phone, you either flash them onto your phone using CWM as above, or you use a firmware update tool known as ODIN. ODIN is a program that lets you load seperate packages for "PDA", "Phone" and "CSC"

PDA = the kernel and rom package, either bundled together, or seperately. you can flash just a kernel using this option, or both rom and kernel. usually in the form of a ".tar" package, NOT a CWM ZIP package

Phone= the modem you wish to use. again usually in a ".tar" package, or the actual modem file itself in the form of the file called "modem.bin" which you can extract from the CWM ZIP modem package of any CWM2 or CWM3 package from the "update" folder

CSC = the country specific set of apps or setup that you wish to include. different countries set up different preset bundles of apps, bootscreens, etc etc for their region. if you wanted a region specific setup, youd simply load the CSC of your choice here, and the phone ends up looking like you bought it in that country. this is mostly unnecessary as its mostly bloatware as far as im concerned, and id rather just use the optimised set of apps from the custom ROM you choose to install. so dont worry about this too much.

Search google for the many hundred step by step guides on how to use Odin to flash, there are tutorial videos on youtube etc.

FROYO OR GINGERBREAD??
as a whole, Froyo 2.2.1 has been highly optimised to the point that the 2.3 gingerbread builds still have not caught up to the speed and battery life of 2.2. so if you want a stable, refined, and balanced setup, you cant go wrong going for a Froyo setup. if you insist on running the latest bleeding edge stuff, then consider Gingerbread builds, but be aware that its still in its infancy and if you arent confident in flashing and tweaking constantly then its probably not stable yet for you.

FROYO:

KERNELS:
if you want the best of the best performance id probably recommend a 2.2.1 custom rom and custom kernel - either Hardcore's Speedmod kernel for Froyo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756, or DamianGTO's GOLD froyo kernel http://forum.damiangto.org/viewforum.php?f=6&sid=155edccdc252e97fb89c5b06da601143, which offers further overclock/undervolt options (you may need to sign up to the damiangto forum to gain access, its free etc). run either with full tweaks and filesystem converted to ext2, and you will see quadrant scores in excess of 2000

ROMS:
a froyo rom is anything you choose but i found Darky's 9.5 Froyo rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091 to have contained all the tweaks that improve your experience as well as a very slick overall interface. i dont rate his "dark core" kernel so once you flash his rom, id go back and flash Hardcore's kernel over the top.
ive also tested JUWES ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964672, which seems good, and the SweetHoney rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020720, which is also stable and full featured. I have also cooked some roms from Doc's Romkitchen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703 but i have found the other roms more cohesive as complete packages

MODEMS:
for XT, use either the UGJL2 modem which i have tested for months and is a solid fast performer - or the newer UGKC1 which im testing now, which seems to have faster GPS response. all can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391

GINGERBREAD:

KERNELS: so far this is still in its infancy. DamianGTO has a forum here: http://forum.damiangto.org/ and has been developing his gingerbread roms for a while now - they are actually quite slick and work well - he has just been banished to his own forum only because he is not abiding to the openness of the licence agreement for android and is keeping his code to himself. i dont care about the politics i just care about my phones performance so i havent minded trying his kernels, he has a GOLDv2.0 gingerbread kernel out http://forum.damiangto.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=27 which is stable, fast, supports EXT4 filesystem and has all tweaks enabled by default. this gives about 1600+ quadrant score and is fast enough for most. he is working on an overclocked/undervolt kernel in his beta 2.1 but its more under development so i wouldnt go there just yet.
Hardcore is working on his gingerbread version of SPEEDMOD kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044519, its still not supporting EXT4 and CWM3 so im waiting for him to get there and then will swap to his kernel, if his froyo speedmod was anything to go by it will be the one to beat.

ROMS: i have tried Darky's RC4/RC5 gingerbread rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091, its good, but i find darky's work is getting very fragmented and more and more unreliable as time goes on - his customer base is so huge that i think it loses some efficiency.
i swapped to official JVB and then after researching the roms out there, decided to try Simone's "sweethoney" gingerbread v3.2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020720- no regrets with this rom, it really is smooth, has nice themeing out of the box, everything works. so i do recommend it as a first timers rom

MODEMS:
exactly the same as froyo, froyo modems work as well on GB i dont think they have anything to do with the build. so go for UGJL2 or UGKC1 for best performance on telecom XT. again, all here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391

I was running Darky's 9.5 and no problems, did you do a wipe before install or factory reset.
Try reinstalling the rom again over the top of existing, use CWM.

Be careful restoring app's with titanium, without data is safer if you are having issues

I'm now on Darky's 10 RC6 which is not a final but still seems pretty stable. It took a bit of installing because it is changing to Gingerbread

What is force closing?

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Yeah that's my task for today, Darkys has a guide for getting back to stock.

Its from mobicity and came with a 12 month warranty. Only had the thing 3 weeks :(

Yes all the roms with 'for the International Galaxy S (I9000) and Bell Mobility Vibrant (I9000M)' are compatible with the i9000T, because the only difference with the i9000T is the 850mhz 3G band you just need to install a modem that lofreq recommended: JL2 or KC1 which support this.

And yes the Speedmod Froyo kernels are very good as lofreq said, pick the latest one(K13E) and Hardcore(the developer of this kernel) recommends the HZ=500 version, depending on your method of flashing either pick the Odin version or one of the ClockWorkMod versions. The "BIGMEM" versions take away 720p video recording and give another 15mb of ram(355mb opposed to the standard 340mb)

Update: right, running stock 2.2.1 again (as per http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/guide-installing-stock-rom-gt-i9000-only.486/) complete with crappy default keyboard; seems to be running fine. Only been 2 hours though. Gonna stick to TouchWiz for a few days and see how we go.

Does anyone else run the Gingerbread keyboard? I remember when I first got the phone (stock) I installed that (there are a few in the app market) and it was the first thing to constantly force-close. Darky's includes it by default, though it never FC'd in Darkys, however LauncherPro, Dolphin Mini, the maps service, all sorts of other things. LauncherPro FC'd a lot in stock as well.
After yesterday's install of Darky Resurrection Edition 9.2 followed by Extreme Edition 9.5, I didn't get any force closes, just phone freezes requiring hard reboot.
