My 2 cents on this; Google is playing the long game and Apple knows this I'm sure by now, its a chess game where pieces are being placed by Google that historically seemed disparate but are now coming together to the point if Apple does not turn on the afterburners and fast it may be at risk of becoming the next Microsoft.  The phone is from what I can see just a means to an end for Google its the entire ecosystem they want to dominate.  

 

• Google Search - The predominant search engine
• Google Maps - The predominant mapping solution
• New AI Assistant - link the above and give context 
• Google Home  - to leverage the AI and integrate with Home Automation 
• Pixel Phone to make the above mobile 
• VR plus Mixed / Augmented reality 

Etc Etc Etc Android Auto....

 

To me all these pieces are coming together to make one compelling story, how quick Apple can react will be the question whatever happens we are in for a fun ride I'm sure.

 

 

I agree with much of the above, but much of what you say suggests that Google are taking a shot at the space where Apple operates - and I think this is good. I really do want to see a proper android competitor to the iPhone, and this is a major step in that direction. BUT, the model is unproven and Google don't have the reputation in this space yet (think resale value) to command the price that Apple can for an iPhone. Maybe next year, or the year after - but for now, People see the iPhone platform as proven, where as this is Googles first real attempt in the same space.

 

Google may know this, and be OK with it and the fact it may well mean awful sales for the Pixel but a longer term reputation improvement. Speaking to many iPhone users (my wife and parents included), they have iPhones because they 'just work' and there is a perception that Android is less usable and less stable. I think that was true a few years ago, but the last few OS releases are very slick. But if they want to take market share off Apple, they have a hell of a task ahead of them to convince those people that the Pixel is just as good, and better than the iPhone. Releasing something that looks very similar and costs the same as an iPhone will not do that.

 

 

 

 

 

I understand; but I think they are thinking past smartphones because how they are now will be obsolete within a few short years.  Google is wide in their investment into technology from the Loon Balloons to Boston Robotics to the investment they made into Magic Leap, have a look at this article https://www.wired.com/2016/04/magic-leap-vr/ . The smart phone is just a conduit for other services, this is the chess game grab all those marbles and you control the game, I believe Apple know this and that is going to be the fun bit amazing tech for us while the battle for hearts and minds goes on.

Really the only benefit I see of this is the very high res screen for VR. Apart from that, an iphone is the better value phone IMO, and looks far better, . Apple products are pretty well made and reliable and history has shown they provide software updates for at least 3 -4 years. Android phone buyers tend not to be wanting to pay as much, and as both an android and iphone users, I find the app support and app quality to be far better on ios. The apps are less prone to crashing and load faster, and the interface is standard, where on android, the interface can vary between apps

IP53 is a long, long way from IP67 or IP68

 

I am aware of that currently having an S7 edge and a bit disappointed that they only have IP53. I was really looking forward to this phone. In saying that I am trying to look at it in a positive way that it has something rather than no protection.

Most newish smartphones are probably around IP53 anyway, even if they haven't been tested or certified as such.

And they will find a way to decline the warranty too if there is a potential water damage because of that lack of certification. Nonetheless not up to marks standards right now and given the price point it will launch at would have been nice to have IP67/68.

At IP53 if you device has water ingress, they will simply claim you sprayed it with water at more than 60° or you submerged it or something. So it's pretty worthless in a warranty sense. I'd have more confidence in a phone with IP67/68 trying to claim for water damage.
