I spoke to someone high up at Sony NZ who said they expect stock and sales to start late next week. $1199

Of which phone?

Sorry the Sony XZ

Ah. Reviews of that have been a bit underwhelming....

Sony are offering noise-canceling earphones free with pre-orders - in Oz.

Reviews looked pretty good to me, though I guess they are underwhelmed by differences compared to prior generation as changes are pretty minimal.

I was pretty impressed with the Z5 premium and Performance X when I saw them at Sony in Berlin.

Saw the Huawei 9 Plus in VF shop this morning - very tempted by it. Lower res display compared to S7 Edge but still a fine looking machine and a reasonable price. Reviews seem to be reasonably supportive. Would welcome any thoughts/comments.

Will we get the Premium version of the Sony phone on any carriers here?

Do you mean Premium version of the XZ? Is there such a thing? Googling doesn't seem to throw it up.

Geektastic: Will we get the Premium version of the Sony phone on any carriers here?

Someone I know at VF thought it was moderately likely but wasn't in a position to comment "officially".

Could someone please put me out of my misery - premium version of what?

Well, not the Sony. It is the XZ plain and simple, no premium version

There was a Sony X Premium or something similar, may be a different phone: they seem to have or have had a fair number with very similar nomenclature.

The XZ looks reasonable and actually has a useful camera, which is of interest.

Shame it does not have a higher resolution display but otherwise looks pretty good and sounds as though it's well built.

Several reviews I read felt that it did not quite have the spec it should have for the price - and the US ones were moaning about the lack of a fingerprint reader for their phones (which other markets seem to get - odd thing to leave off in one market).

That has something to do with some patents HP has.

Oh OK. Strange  that it does not affect any other phones with fingerprint readers but there you go! Would NZ versions have the reader?

Yes they do. Its not so much the fingerprint reader which is an issue I think its the placement and how it is used. Something along those lines. It is only a US thing. I also read if they download an international ROM to the US version the fingerprint is then enabled. Nonetheless the NZ version will have the fingerprint reader.
