specifically buying an AT&T branded phone, then complaing about having to hack the phone to remove the AT&T related changes is a bit meh :) Good luck, I'm sure there are plenty of users who are doing the same thing, so there should be heaps of info on xda.

You're right, it is a bit meh! Im an XT customer so wanted something that would run on that. Telecom Galaxy S a little costly for me, but the Captivate wasnt so decided I'll head there.. FFC and no FM radio, but rarely used those anyway when I had my Touch Pro2, so cost wise not a bad decision. The Captivate is still top notch hardware up with the Generic Galaxy S, it's just the software that's crud. Yep, lots of decent info on XDA so all covered there.. just wish I didnt have to! Not new to hacking/modifying, just new to Android, but prepped myself reasonably well so I'm ready to go. There isnt much feedback on GZ re anyone modding the Captivate, unlike the Galaxy S hehe! The processes are pretty much the same, cept would be nice if there were some other users on GZ to compare experiences with.

Let you guys know how I get on.. Phone still in customs though... 3 business days so far, wonder if this is typical? Might buzz em tomorrow.

Is it possible to go back to the original VodafoneNZ firmware 2.1 after flashing a custom rom to a VodafoneNZ sgs??? I really doubt it. That alone can put off many users. iPhone can be restored to the factory original firmware with the push of 2 buttons and a mouse click, android Sgs doesn't have that Function after flashing a firmware. And the 3-button reset is not present, that sucks, really. If you are not a geek, avoid android. Android is really only for us geek, IMHO
Froyo is a very important and essential update. Installing to Sd cards, flash 10, huge performance increase (nexus one on 2.2 is 2 times faster than on 2.1) and etc.
My iPhone 4 is indeed slower (jailbroken, heaps of apps and hack and rubbish), but it works well and very stable (it crashes once a month or once every 2 month). Android is faster (nexus one is super fast, sgs with lagfix is super fast), but it might not be as stable (It might crash a lot after installing many apps and hacks)

I think once your on custom firmware I can't seem a reason to go back, custom firmware is always gonna have a few extras and be newer than stock firmware. If you don't want the latest firmware then don't go custom. It's a bit wierd to go want to go custom now, but want to go stock in the future, usually stick with stock then go custom, your going the wrong way. You can backup the vodafone stock firmware, but there are not many guides on it as everyone wants to go forward not back :) I can see the usefullness however if you flick your phone onto a friend who can't upgrade the firmware in the future, or for warranty purposes.

I'm going to give it a couple more days (till the weekend) and if no 2.2 update appears, I may have to bite the bullet and do a custom update. Its a pity though as I would have preferred to do things properly.

Anyone heard any news about when Froyo's going to be released for the Wildfire yet? Specifically the unlocked UK ones?

I have a genuine Telecom NZ galaxy purchased from them and i got the froyo update today.

When i first connected the phone to kies today it said no update was available. I used kies registry patcher to make kies think the phone was from the uk, but then i chickened out and used registry patcher to set it back to telecom nz again. This time when i went back into kies it said an update was available, and voila froyo.

It appears to be the genuine telecom nz version of froyo with the crappy telecom splash screen, and all the apn settings pre-loaded. It has transformed my phone from a laggy horrible device to what it should have been all along. And it has also fixed my kies connection problems  - before i was lucky if kies recognised my phone 10% of the time, nw it connects each and every time. Go figure.

Not sure why this worked but it did.

Can you please confirm ongoing experiences on Froyo in this thread?

This is the I9000 Galaxy S thread with plenty of feedback from users of this great handset.

Cheers

I have Froyo on my SGS (Vodafone Model)

But the thing is, i dont have a windows computer for KIES, so got it from a update.zip file.

Runs very fast, the SGS pwns the iPhone, they only flame us because they know it ;-)

Updated my vodafone purchased SGS to Froyo this morning. This was what I did (don't guarantee that this will work for all, but as an FYI to all):

  • Used Kies Registry Patcher as instructed earlier. For the product code I used CPW which spoofed UK as the origin and spoofed software revision as: I9000XXJM1/I9000OXAJM1/I9000XXJM1/I9000XXJM1.

  • Ensured no lag fixes were installed previously as well as running the Samsung launcher (instead of Launcher Pro).

  • Checked for an update and sure enough there was one available for the above product code. I tried several previously and found this one working, so went for it.

  • The update took around 15 minutes in total. At the end, the reboot showed the logo screen for an additional 5 minutes or so. I left it there, sweating it out, until the main screen came up.

No apps or data was lost via the update (even though I was prepared to start again from scratch).

After the update:

Running the Quadrant benchmark tool resulted in the phone scoring over 2000 marks.

The only other thing I had to check was to run any applications that required root access again as they needed permissions set against them again.

Been working since this morning and am happy with the update :)
