to upgrade to GB you will need to
1) use ODIN to flash a base GB rom that includes bootloaders, like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991792

2) flash a telecom XT compatible modem, either UGJL2 (older) or UGKC1 (newer), both have been tried, tested and proven to be very good with XT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391

at this point youre done, running a plain vanilla gingerbread rom. if you then want to flash a CUSTOM GB rom, you can choose from any of the multitude of roms on the XDA forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665
simple rule of thumb, if its on page 1 or 2 its being actively used and worked on - if its on page 3 or further, dont bother.

it seems the most recommended ones are Juwes Rom, Simply Honey, Darky's, etc. but i would get used to plain vanilla GB before you start farting around with custom kernels and whatnot

Sorry prolly a silly question but.....

I have a i9000gsmh - vodafone galaxy.

Its been rooted and busybox, superuser and CWM are installed

I want to use it on the XT network - so have used odin to reflash the phone (modem) to either UKGC1 and UGL2 - have then ensured cdma 850mhz band (v) is enabled with *#*#0011#*

However I get no service on the 850mhz band.

With the vodafone modem (srjv1) it gets service on the gsm900 band

Do I need to flash the actual PDA ROM as well? Just thought id ask the q before I do it - just a tad hesitant encase I cant get it back to stock

the voda version is 900/2100 3G. XT is an 850 3G network with 2100 in the main centres. No amount of flashing will get you 850 3G on your handset. Even selecting 850 as you've done above will make no difference at all.

Long story short, you cant.

Unlike the iPhone4/Galaxy S2 etc, the i9000 came in two variants; the 850mhz version, sold here as the i9000T, and the 900mhz version, which is for Vodafone/2Degrees only.

Hey nofam.. remember when this thread was young say.. 100 pages and we had all sorts of discussion of the voda version working on telecom and unlocking 850 3g on it... sigh.. those were the days!

God, I know - I remember being so scared of doing something wrong (which I certainly did). It's amazing how far the custom ROM scene has come with the Galaxy devices - there are so many more 'safety ropes' now, like automatic EFS backup etc. That's possibly not a good thing though, as evidenced by the increasing number of stupid, lazy questions on XDA.

I'd like to think that as long as there are Android devices (and hopefully, marquee Samsung Galaxy ones!) we'll be here to argue, help, and generally mull them over!

i found one on xda - but it was a stock samsung rom - i assume vodafone mod theres like most other carriers

I had a brief look at XXJVU firmware, went back to Teamhacksung's ICS ika CM9 build 13. Its still in alpha stage.
I have been using the latest build for couple of days, no major problems so far. The ICS interface is clean and quite different to Gingerbread.
A couple of applications are not working in ICS, Viber for one is not working for ICS. There might a few other applications that might work.
Battery life, well its too early to say at the moment, will have a better idea after couple of charge/discharge cycles.

I've been using the Onecosmic ICS build for about a week. Quite nice look and some useful improvements, but also some sacrifices from leaving Samsung software, like no Swype or Exchange sync. Also occasionally get delays starting or switching apps.

If the "ValuePack Rom" you are talking about is the Perka ROM, I haven't tried it, but have run a number of Rom's he has developed, they are first class, so wouldn't hestitate to give this one a go if I felt so inclined. He has also done some "modded" roms with an ICS (blue) theme which are pretty good. The last I tried was the JVZ.

Currently running Onecosmic's ICS RC2.11 and have been for about 4/5 days. It has it foibles. A couple I have encountered are the bootloop and not being able to connect to my PC via USB - there are work-arounds and once you get those little things sorted out, I like it.

It is late-alpha/early-beta, but if you are prepared for a few glitches here and there and are confident enough to be able to sort them out I would give it a try.

Finding the overall performance better on the FuguMod kernel, OC to 1300 via antutu with zeam launcher. Seems to work better than glitch kernel with stock launcher. Using the antutu benchmark (as opposed to Quadrant) I am getting scores over 3400.

I am finding battery usuage average at best, but others are finding it ok.

I am happy to contiune running with this for a while.

I knew I should have been a little less subtle...

From what I've read on the rumour-mill, Samsung's position at the moment seems to be that they probably won't release ICS for the Galaxy S as there isn't enough memory for a full Samsung ICS-based TouchWiz + their additional software stack.

So, instead they've been working on a Gingerbread-based update with some "backported" features (including face unlock, and a built-in photo editor), one version of which has leaked, and this is what I was referring to as the "valuepack" rom. It's basically an 2.3.6 base with some new enhancements; some (ok "most") of which I'm not that interested in (can't see the point in face unlock myself, for example!)

OK, that sounds encouraging! I'm not too worried about poking at something a bit to try and get past issues, so I'll probably give this a try soon

I tried the Teamhacksung CM9 build 9 which seemed good initially but got laggy after a couple of days. Switched back to DarkyRom for some stability over the Xmas/New Years, and then installed the Teamhacksung CM9 build 13 a couple of days ago. Perhaps too early to tell, but it seems much improved over the last one (and they have defaulted to USB mass-storage support rather than MTP, so things work as they used to in terms of plugging into your PC (yay)). Battery life doesn't seem as good as the Darky Roms I'm used to, but not too bad.

I was finding the ICS builds a bit laggy too, since I switch from stock launcher to zeam this has improved out of sight. No lag at all to speak if now.
