I'm just not a fan of the Samsung experience and have found that their ecosystem is going in a similar direction as Apple - for instance the media apps that only work with Samsung AV products or printers.

I think the problem with a product like Android is that it's very fragmented. You need buy in from people and commitment to ensure compatibility and co-operation between vendors, some of whom compete in the same space or have thier own ideas or relationships to consider. It's not easy to get that and so bigger companies can often decide for the betterment of their platform to limit to their own products. I don't see it as a conspiracy as much as I do requirement for the development to continue and to be able to provide end users with nice integration.

you are right in that the market is very fragmented.. hence the appeal of nexus devices...as they will be supported and updated by Google..

having said that, Samsung do have a good record of updating their flagship as much as they can...the S2 is up to ICS now...i dont know if its going JB though....

With the HTC One, I think HTC will be trying to keep this updated at least for 18 months...

This is going to be my first HTC device...like ever....so I am hoping HTC doesnt shake up my trust in it.. I have had Sony, Nokia, Sammy in the past...

I have just been talking to the likely stockists here in the Auckland CBD. Noel Leemings and The Warehouse both have the same story - due early/mid next week - $1,149 for VF and $999 for XT.

However, Dick Smith are saying "$969 - $30 discount". I asked if that was a 4G/LTE model and they said 'yep'. Went up to talk to The Warehouse then went back to DSE and asked them to double-check and they are adamant that it's 4G/LTE. They say it's an unlocked model and will work on any carrier. Also confirmed 32GB silver/white.

This sounds almost too good to me. Anyone have any thoughts before I go back and pre-order with a 10% deposit?

You might be able to get it cheaper at NL? I went in and said I'd order 2 if they gave me 20% off (same as easter sale), and they did it without a thought (so got it for $799).

Just one thought. Make sure you fully understand your options to cancel the order.

I've just cancelled an on-line order with Dick Smith for a product they claimed was in stock when it was not. I assume you can do the same with an in store pre-order but probably good to check first.

The following is from what I'm currently writing in review of this device and I don't want to spoil that but it does need to be said here...

After a few days of using a new phone I will have rooted it and made a few tweaks. Custom kernel at least if not Cyanogen or other custom ROM.

Obviously the One I'm using is for review and it needs to stay stock for that purpose but I honestly haven't felt any urge to mess with it at all.

It is the closest any phone I have ever used has come to being the perfect device. My love affair with Samsung is well and truly over.

Good to see you've moved to the dark side. I was put off HTC after my Sensation, but the One looks amazing. I couldn't live with the battery myself, but each to their own!

That's really good to hear your early thoughts on the One re rooting. When mine arrive I won't be rooting to make sure latest updates come through and sense 5 looks really nice. Custom roms not needed, did see a video today One was rooted to change the home menu etc using the MoDaCo toolkit but I'm leaving that alone. No more Sammy here either.

I've been following this thread for a while, and cannot wait to get my hands on the HTC One. I've been stuck with the Sensation for nearly 2 years, and I've had enough!

I'm on a Vodafone contract atm, but am tempted by the price the $800 that NL has been offering to others for the Telecom XT model.

What do you all think... is it worth taking the risk and preordering a T-XT HTC One through NL, and hoping that it works properly on Vodafone's 3G and LTE networks?

It should work fine on both networks.
