Had been holding off on going to ICS for fear that a 512mb device like the Galaxy S might not be up to it, but now that I'm on it I can safely say that my concerns were misplaced.

Everything seems so much snappier and more responsive (and no, not just as a result of a fresh install - I did that semi-regularly on Gingerbread and didn't end up with anything like this). How much is a result of ICS itself versus the specific ROM I've chosen I'm not entirely sure, but it's a significant jump in performance.

Was previously running DarkyRom v10.2.2, and am now on Slim ICS 4.2 with Semaphore ICS 1.3.0s kernel.

Under Darky I typically had on the order of 150mb RAM free, now I'm up around 210mb. Previously I had little annoyances like after waking my phone and quickly typing my PIN unlock the phone wouldn't always pick up every digit (usually registering only three key presses instead of four). This happened at least 50%+ of the time. Haven't had a single recurrence of this (and I've tried really hard to break it!).

So if anyone's on the fence I can at least say that in my case it was well worth the upgrade. Still have some questions over battery usage but it's hard to say if it's over and above what I was seeing on GB or just the result of excessive use thanks to it feeling like a new phone! Either way, I'm usually in close proximity to a charger, etc so it's not of major concern.

The increase in ram is more to do with kernel development as the devs have managed to free RAM that had been reserved for system items. The max ram that the i9000 can have is just over 400mb but that breaks hardware acceleration for video decoding and also hd video capture.

ICS has been fairly stable on the i9000 for a while now, with Slim, CM9, AOKP and others beavering away before JB dropped. Havent had much time to muck around with the phone as it's been an essential work tool for the past few weeks but I'm very tempted to give some of the JB roms a run.

I have just moved to CM9 ICS using a nightly build. The UI is awesome and quite snappy, however the XXXJVB modem is consuming a lot of battery and has poor reception. Can anyone suggest a better modem? I am on XT and it is a I9000T.

I'm using KC1 and battery usage/reception seems pretty decent.

Modem's aren't ROM/android version specific - they are most definitely device specific (although you can use the nexus s modems with the i9000).

Just need to make sure the modem is in a CWM package which is compatible. If you're unsure the ICS CWM zip will not flash properly, just extract the file (modem.bin I think) from a the CM7 KC1 zip file and put it into a ICS modem zip package from somewhere like perkas file stash.

Thanks guys, it worked like a charm! My signal is now -81 from -109, no bar to 3 bars!!! Let's see if battery life improves.

I'm very tempted to give some of the JB roms a run.

...and I thought the same, so I loaded Slim Bean 2.0 onto my phone yesterday evening.

First impressions are good; the rom seems very smooth; I used Titanium Backup to restore my apps and the ones I've checked all seem to work. Good signal, call quality, internet speed. WiFi works. Media plays. GPS seems fine.

I've also put a slightly later kernel on - the ROM comes with Semaphore 2.0.x (forgotten exactly what); and I've moved up to 2.0.3s.

Cons: Can't seem to find "MTP" mode for USB (which I find handy) - this may be a kernel issue; not too fussed. Also, I've had to reset my ringtones at least twice - perhaps the kernel upgrade had something to do with this ? I'm using ringtones stored on my built-in "sd card" (well, that's what it's called...); so also possible issues around ringtone and USB mounting the drive, I guess. Apparently there is a known issue with JB and "external SD cards" - haven't tried to do much there yet.

I expect there to be a number of updates in a short time period whilst things "settle", but looking good so far.

Has anyone found a ROM/kernel combo that allows audio redirection through the official Samsung car dock?

I'm looking in particular for an ICS ROM (or JB, if it's stable) rather than GB (I know CM7 is meant to work).

I've used the Galaxy Dock Sound Redirector app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.muteheadlight.dockredir&hl=en) but it doesn't seem to play nice with any of the ROMs I've tried so far. I chatted to the app's developer and he could only suggest I speak to the author of any ROM I was using and request the following:

"Please have the CM dev supporting your model verify the correct mapping exists between the ROM audio device and the kernel audio path (commonly set in libaudio).

Example: DEVICE_OUT_ANLG_DOCK_HEADSET in ROM should map to the path PLAYBACK_EXTRA_DOCK in the kernel."

Unfortunately he couldn't suggest any working ICS ROM/kernel combos (most people only report ones that don't work!) - hopefully someone here might be able to help. :-)

Keep an eye on this thread, there are some ICS but no JB ROMs yet. Unfortunately some lowlife stole my car dock so I can't do any more work on it.

Yeah, I've been looking at that - sadly a lot of the ROMs mentioned there didn't work for me. Just about to flash plain old CM9 which was recommended by someone on the xda forums.

Jumped on the JellyBean bandwagon.. Project butter is pretty awesome.
I've installed Slim JB 2.5v. The V meaning it's got V sync enabled or something to that matter.

Interesting times in the i9000 dept with another change with partition layouts - CM9 is coming more in line with what Helly Bean is - which will give more storage to your apps with the hope to get less 'low space' warnings for the /datadata partition.

The only gripe I really have is that media scanner isn't picking up any of my pictures on my internal SD card or music on my external SD card. Think its cause there's some .nomedia files in both SD cards which stops the media scanner in it's tracks. Quickpic is a workaround for pictures and I think poweramp works for music (but i've only got the trian so when the license runs out i'm doomed!). Tried apollo, winamp doubletwist which all have relied on the media scanner.

Back to Slim ICS??? hmmmm

whats wrong with just going through your folders and removing the .nomedia files as appropriate, to get media scanner working normally?

tried that... tried formatting everything and bringing things back slowly but when installing apps like camera360 and viber, they automatically put .nomedia files in here and there. the best I got was gallery to show 21 out of 600 pictures + vids in my DCIM folder.
