TheUngeek: Smart plans get 3gb at the moment.....

Looking at that, VF could pull the plug at any moment with that offer, and you're locked in for 24 months. I hate being locked in.  Just finished my 12 month period with the last plan I took.  Maybe I have commitment issues :)

Ahhh, yeah it does:
1.  Offer is available to all new and existing Vodafone customers who sign up to, or who are already subscribed to, an iPhone or Smart plan during the Promotional Period ("Eligible Customers").

Hmmm... sounds too good to be true. Is there a link to that reference Neets?

And I take it you won't be signing up? :-)

Sure is.  I hate being at the mercy of Vodafone, or Telecom (Internet).  Just rubs me up the wrong way.  You ought to see what it will sting you should you want out of the contract prior to the 24 month period.

I checked it out with VF customer service... $150. That could well be worth it to escape the clutches of the big telcos and to again become a free agent, such as yourself, in fact.

I'll pop over to scope out the dealio on the 3GB offer. Funny they haven't txted me about it. Just an honest oversight on their part, I'm almost certain.

Thx for the link Neets.

Well root my boot. Just got off the fone to the 'fone customer service person with a Middle Eastern accent, and it turns out that I am indeed entitled to 3GB a month of Data usage. And have been for a year, as it happens. So those cunningly worded warning txts from VF 'saving' me from busting my 100MB data cap were simply a dodgy scam to discourage me from using my rightful 3Gig.

Doesn't that fill you with a warm glow for our red-liveried telco? Nice one VF.

Never mind. Now that I know I have it, I say battery-schmattery. 3G will be on all the freakin' time from now until they pull the pin on the promotion. And starting this very evening, I will be making my SGS into a nifty wifi hotspot to tether my laptop to. No more paying for wifi when I'm coffee-ing around the city. It's 3G data all the way.

Booyah!

My sincere thanks to The Ungeek for the revelation, and to Neets for the direction. Cool

Cheers,
R2D2

Ta daaaahhhh...

Typed from the laptop using the SGS as a wifi hotspot. Talk about easy to set up. Not as fast as wifi and adsl but eminently usable. Cool.

At 48 hours (less the 2 minutes on USB) I had 22% battery left and started to charge it.

If you have a record of it up to the point you connected to USB, you can add that to the amount showing just before you plugged it back in again - it will still give you total time of screen on. Of course, if you haven't recorded the two figures, then ignore what I just typed.

Wow, you posh thing. Forty_eight_freakin'_hours on a single charge. So I guess that puts the "SGS is rubbish on battery duration" wisdom in the trash then. For a full featured, high performance smatphone, that is absolutely awesome. (pssssst... maybe you should keep it quiet. Some of us are getting a complex about the modest dimensions of our extended usage...)

I think if you disable data for most of the time and don't really use your phone much that's a pretty reasonable period. For me if I don't use my phone at all I can probably expect less than 24 hours (most I ever got was 22)
