A new version of Viber for Android has just been released: 2.0.1
What's new?

- "Exit" button. Note that shutting Viber off may result in unavailability to receive calls and texts.
- Important features, such as Proximity Sensor, are now enabled by default.
- Viber-contacts identification mechanism was improved.
- Many other bug fixes.

Hi everyone,

I'm excited to announce that according to preliminary results, it seems as though we managed to find and fix the collision problem of Viber with CM7 and MIUI ROMs (and possible the rest as well)
Both these ROMs "change" the device's identity (virtually, of course), preventing Viber from adapting itself correctly to the device's microphone configuration. This is why most of you with ROMs experienced the one-side audio issue.

Anyway - we are working on adding a fix to the new version that will hopefully be officially released next week to Market.

Any word on when tablets will be able to use it? Would be really cool to have the same "number" on viber for my phone and tablet. Have loaded it via the apk but it fails with a SMS error

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

Viber for Tablets is in the works right now, but it'll take a little while before it's released.

In the future, we plan to allow the option to use the same Viber for number for multiple devices, but this probably won't happen soon. In the meanwhile, if you have a second device with Viber, you can use your home number, friend's, family's, etc.

Viber 2.0.2 has just been released to Market!

What's new?
- Viber is back on Market for HTC Wildfire and HTC Hero users. However, note that due to immanent compatibility problems, Viber might not work 100% smoothly. We're working hard to improve these problems.
- After hard work, as promised, Viber now supports *some* of the famous custom Android ROMs, such as CM7 and MIUI. We need your feedback in order to make sure the major problems with these ROMs are now resolved.

Please make sure you download the latest version.

Does Viber already tell you is a user is actually connected as Skype does?
I would like to know if someone was actually online before messaging them. I find I text my friend in HK but never get a reply as I assume he isn't always connected.

Thanks for the comment, we'll take it into consideration.
Meanwhile, note that you do already have an indirect way of seeing who's online and who's not.When you make a Viber call, if it says "Ringing..", it means the other side's phone is literally ringing, meaning they're online. If it only says "Calling..", it probably means they're offline.

Same for messaging - if you send a text and you see the "✔" sign, it means the message has been received at the other side's phone (he's online). If you only see the arrow sign, it means it's been sent from you, but pending the other side to come online (their offline at the moment).

Think of Viber as a "substitute" for your real phone. When you call/text someone, you're not sure if they are currently available or not. Right? ;)

Finally got around to installing it, after having mixed results with pretty much every other voip software available and have been chatting extensively to my workmates in Sydney with perfect clarity - me over wireless to adsl, them on Telstra 3G.

I can't believe just how good the call quality is.

Same with me and my mate in HK. Him: iPhone 3G and me on Android WiFi. Just wish there was an icon to show if he was actually online or not so I am not wasting any 3G data calling a non connected user if I am out and about.

But surely you'd be wasting as much (if not more) data with the constant status checks than with a failed call?

Placing a call (that's missed eventually), i.e just getting the dialtone without the other side picking the call up, uses negligible amounts of data.

As Tigercorp says it would use more data updating who was online and who wasnt. I am more than happy to treat Viber as an alternative calling option. It worked great recently from France to Aussie for both calls and texts.

Except that a normal text is received any time the recipient's phone is on, you don't have to turn any 3rd party software on to receive it so it is safe enough to send normal SMS messages anytime.
Whereas if I send a Viber SMS, the recipient might not turn Viber on for a day or more.

If I knew they were online I would Viber text them but if I knew they weren't online, I would just SMS them normally so I know they will receive it.

On that note, I sent 2 SMSs through Viber to a non-Viber numbers and it sent each one twice. Does Viber send a message through each SMS client you have on the phone? I have GoSMS and also the stock app.

Do people switch viber on and off? I leave it running in the background along with skype, data usage is minimal likewise battery drain
