I got an email last night letting me know that the android beta was available for me to try out.

It seems fine, although there wasn't a choice during install to let me choose Galaxy S 2 as my phone model so i'm not sure if i'm experiencing bugs or features of another phone.

Either way the call quality seems decent between an iPhone 4 and my android and i'll probably give it a few weeks before deciding if it should replace my default dialer.

One thing that I was surprised to see was that video calling is not supported. I was sure that the press release I read announcing viber for android said video calling was coming too but so far, nothing. I can't even find any solid reference to it other than viber doesn't do it.

*shrug*

Anyway, anyone else using it? What do you think? Has it replaced your default dialer?

I've been on it for a few weeks and today it has stopped working. Can you tell me what version you are running? I wonder if they've released an updated version.

Yip, sure enough, new version out. Shame they didn't notifiy me.

Oh well I hope this is a release candidate and is better behaved than the last version. So far so good.

I'm running V2.0.108226. Bit stink they didn't let you know an update was available.

I stopped using the Viber beta as it randomly unregistered itself one day after a reboot. Btw if you are looking for a video chat app apparently there is one called VTOK that supports Phone - PC via Google Talk http://vtokapp.com/

Been using it for a couple of weeks now. Made a few calls to a mate in Aussie with an iPhone 4, never had a problem. Very clear and no delay.

Hi all,
This is a member of the Viber development team.

I'd like to refer to your questions/problems:

1. Video chat is certainly planned for the future, but we don't have concrete dates yet. For now Viber focues on adding features, fixing bugs, and expanding to new platforms.

2. We update our users about new Beta versions in our Facebook page. Now that I've seen this thread, I'll make sure to follow it and keep you posted personally whenever we release a new beta version.

3. Viber 'uninstalled itself' a few weeks ago because we had a major server problem. It was solved after a day or two, and this problem shouldn't occur again,

If you have any more questions, please feel free!
Regards,
Viber.

Thanks I have reinstalled Viber now. I have had a few issues with call quality but they are likely related to my internet connection.

Thanks for the info Viber. It has worked fine for me but have only used it a couple of times as most of the people I want to talk are on Android and dont have their beta invites yet.

One question, is there anyway to turn it off, it is always showing in the taskbar?

In the settings you can untick 'Show notification icon'

Hi again,

1. Regarding the sound quality issues - please try using Viber when both sides are on a high-speed WiFi connection.  Is it better now?

2. If you meant turning off Viber itself - this can only be done through the Android process manager (manually killing Viber).  Note that if you have C2DM support in your Android (Android 2.2 and above) you will be able to receive calls + Viber texts even when viber is shut off!

3. Regarding the privacy concerns raised here - you are actually very wrong. Viber has one of the highest, most strict privacy terms among the online communication services (check it - go to Google, Facebook, etc, and compare it with our Privacy Policy found in our hompage).

I'll elaborate:

First, it is important to be accurate – we only collect names and phone numbers, nothing else. Naturally, we collect users' information not because we are curious of its content, but for functional reasons, and in order for us to enable the service we, as a company, promise to provide. Without that information, Viber cannot function. This is not different from any other major social network/communication service provider in our world nowadays.

I would like to clarify again: we DO NOT sell users' information to third-parties, and we keep this information WELL locked in our servers, with extremely limited access to it

In addition, deactivating your account will instantly allow you to delete all your contacts' info from our servers, so the power is in the user's hands.

If you have more doubts or questions, I'm here :)
Viber.

And it is very much appreciated :)

I have been generally happy with the recent beta (had lots of trouble with the previous one), but because I never received a notification that the new beta was available (even though I'm on the mailing list), I'd like to hear about it in this thread as soon as it becomes available.
