It doesn't show up using run-gps either, the tracks are very accurate. There is no GPS problem in my handset, it works perfectly in all apps I've tried.

Ahh you must have been the one that got the custom made phone then with a different chipset to everyone else.. :)

@NZtechfreak - does your GPS use the chip or the agps thing?

If the latter it seems to defeat the point of having gps as doesn't that use data and not pure gps?

I've had gps issues where I couldn't get a lock driving around auckland at all for an hour. Lots of satellites seen, but none strong enough for a lock, and even when there is a lock the strength varies second to second, even just siting on my armchair doing nothing and not moving.

The leaked jh2 firmware which was for the capactive fixes those issues somewhat.
Allows the locking on weak signals, so no grey bars in gpstest and you can lock onto more than 8, also the locks are faster.

That is definitely one thing a lot of people have noticed though, the galaxy seems to drop satellites and shuffle them around a lot compared to other devices and seems to drop strong satellites sometimes and then lock onto weaker ones.

Anyway considering they managed to make it lock onto weaker signals and use more than 8 Im feeling semi confident they can sort the rest of the issues out. Seems to be pointing towards firmware issues now rather than hardware.

My phone is good enough for using car nagigation apps most of the time, a few times its got me on a parallel road that was very close etc but car apps are a bit more clever. They make lots of assumptions about where you will be and snap you to roads even if the gps is reporting you arent on the road and drop what they think is bad data etc. For people overseas with very small roads packed together and lots of buildings it starts to become an issue more...

Anyway, roll on september!

Look, the GPS implementation may not be all it could be, but it works perfectly for me in every application I've tried and my lock times are around 10s which is commensurate with every other smartphone I've owned for the last few years. The thing about Run.GPS is that is doesn't try to place you onto a street, it shows your actual GPS track, and the accuracy is just fine on my Galaxy S. There may be some problem behind the scenes that a program like GPS test would reveal, but to my mind if it works perfectly with all applications, then the problem is irrelevant.

If you look at the poll at XDA about 15% of users report the same as me, a further 15% don't use GPS often, but have not had problems when they did. So nearly a third back my experience, so its not as if mine is 'special' somehow.

If that isn't your experience with the Galaxy S then I'm sorry, but theres really no need for non-contructive sarcasm.

My GPS had trouble getting locks, but I'd assume if the problem was that severe that no ones gps worked then it wouldn't of been released. hopefully by the time froyo comes out it will roll out with a good fix =)

That poll is about as accurate as the gps on the galaxy (sorry couldn't resist).
People dropping into the thread to say how great the gps is on the first day of owning it only to return a week later asking if there are any fixes etc (of course they cant change the vote).

Definitely some people seem to get pretty good results though no one has managed on xda to post _consistant_ good tracks there yet.

Anyway I was letting people know some facts, that its definitely flawed, there are issues with it which is why Samsung have said they are working on a fix (already have released partial fixes for it)
These are facts that have been established
- locking > 8 satellites
- locking on weak snr's
- dropping strong snr's for weaker ones

There is a list... perhaps not so important for you, no idea where you live but they will come into play in big cities even more.
Anyway didn't come here to argue, glad yours is working ok for you and you are happy with it.

As i said earlier in many cases it gives pretty good results, just seems to be inconsistant and in some big cities the tracks are horrific and basically unuseable. I'm just glad mine is useable.
Im very picky though, I think I deserve to be with a phone close to 1k.

I have ordered myself a Galaxy S so waiting on delivery now. I seriously hope Samsung fix the lag and gps issues though.

Has anyone else had issues upgrading firmware via Kies? Tried last night, but after downloading new firmware had an error message something like ‘failed to convert to upgrade mode’ Thankfully phone was recoverable with reboot (despite warning on screen not to turn off!). Any ideas on how to get upgrade to work?

What version of windows? Are you on 64bit? Have you tried reinstalling the drivers through kies? Click on the kies logo at the top left and go reinstall drivers. I'm on windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and had no problems.

still on XP, will try reinstalling drivers tonight. Had no other issues with Kies, liked pc suite with my n95 better though

Until recently Kies either did not run properly on Win 7 64-bit and/or did not really support the Galaxy S. I think was very flaky all round, on several OSs. I had all sorts of trouble and simply, it never worked.
Then a couple of nights ago I stumbled upon a new update available for Kies itself that came out earlier this week. This does support both Galaxy S and Win 7 32 and 64. I downloaded it and was able to update my GS firmware to Eclair JM1. I didn't back-up and felt that Kies did not give me enough warning on this and I was too dumb to think of it myself. As a result my phone was reset to new factory defaults and I lost a heap of stuff - but that's another story.

Sorry I can't give you a link to the site where I got the Kies upgrade - I have it at home and I'm at work and not able to look for it right now. I will put it up tonight if you can't find it. I seem to remember it was a Samsung site out of Singapore??

Thanks, that would be great if you could post a link to the kies upgrade you found, I did check for an update to kies from the menu but it tells me I already have the latest version (v1.5.1.10071_32)

More on the GPS saga....

So it seems sprint postponed the release date of the epic 4g so they could fix the GPS issues.
Samsung have now come out and said publically that the epic 4g is "tested and validated" and endgadget have said the gps is extremely accurate in the epic4g compared to the other us variants.

Samsung also said that the other galaxies GPS's will be "optimised" in september.

Now everyone is wondering exactly what "optimised" means.. does that mean a proper fix like the epic or more tinkering as they have done so far... but assuming they just meant optimise as in "fix" like the epic its looking good :)

Anyway good to see that at least the epic appears to have gps working very accurately.
Yet to see users confirming this....

""We have tested and validated both Network Assisted (indoor) and Autonomous (outdoor) GPS on the Epic 4G. With regards to Vibrant and Captivate, we are currently testing software updates which will optimize GPS performance. We expect to be able to make the updates available in September and will communicate more information and download instructions in the next few weeks.""

As Samsung UK have said GPS optimisations will be available in september also, it seems pretty obvious that it will be the same as the vibrant ones...
