That is nasty... it shouldn't be like that. Obviously an issue if you are somwhere with no coverage.

Hi Kilack, most phones are AGPS and dont really work that well without cell reception. Including the iphone.

The GPS chips in them are different to devices like Garmin. Its a shame really.

Well in some early agps phones there were limitations that they couldn't function with true/pure GPS.

That should definitely not be the case with the iphone 3gs, iphone 4 or the galaxy s and probably every other decent phone out there.

The galaxy s has a broadcom 4751 chip, a step up from the 4750, iphone 3gs has a broadcom 4750.

These chips can definitely function _very_ well with only GPS. The assisted mode defiitely will help you get a lock in seconds instead of minutes but won't help with accuracy which is purely down to the GPS once it kicks in and using the satellites,.

The new tomtom line, the XXL 550 dedicated GPS navigators also use the broadcom 4750 chips so the galaxy s's actually have a better gps chip in them than the tomtoms.

The only difference with a phone once its using the satellites is that there is probably a smaller antenna in the phone than a dedicated GPS unit but then again these gps chips are very sensitive...

The android market has been having issues the last 24 hours or so. Don't panic its not just you..
Just keep trying....

Oh and welcome to android market :), nah its usually not like this, unlucky timing for you.

Thats all good.
I did some googling before posting and saw that there was some issues.

I love the phone so far. Ordered it from Mobicity a few weeks ago.

Now i guess its time to start reading instructions on how to mod it.

Hi, I've been lurking for a few weeks. Thanks everyone, I've picked up so much just watching and listening.

Did it take 2 weeks from the time your ordered from Mobicity for the phone to arrive? What was the delay, they imply it'll be about 5 or so days.

Still unsure if I'll order from Unlocked Mobile or Mobicity. The price at Mobicity went up twice over a week, a total of $100.

I've read others have used Clove as well. But I've not read any where of problems with Unlocked Mobiles.

Can you explain why you recommend not using them?

I'm willing the NZ/AUD exchange rate to pick up in my favour, it just keeps getting worse

A couple of people here failed credit card security checks with unlocked mobiles and it wasted a lot of their time. I ordered from unlocked mobiles and had no issues at all and so did someone else..
I would suggest if you do use them that you email them a photocopy of some ID to go along with your purchase.
I happened to email them during the buying process and so did the other person that had no issues so probably contact is the key. With Clove you will have to do the same.

I've already contacted them and discussed the problems others had, and I've sent them proof of my delivery address. They said they needed me to use my work email if I wanted the phone sent to work, and that way they could verify the address. I sent them my work email signature (including logos etc). However since that email, I've had no reply. I guess until you make a purchase they can't marry up my stray email to an order. Thanks for the replies.

I've used 3 so far.
1) the one that started it all from modaco, moving data to the faster nand.
2) the ext3/ext4 partition on the sdcard.
3) creating a new filesystem inside current rfs filesystem

There are some better fixes on the way, next week we should have some fixes that convert the rfs file system to ext4 which will be the best solution by far. Unless you are in a rush I'd wait and see how that one goes - it should be good because its going to be native rather than like in option 3. It will be the first real step to a proper fix for the lag.
