I have read a few conflicting posts (not here) on the upcoming Froyo release and must admit have been holding off from rooting / trying different firmware’s just as yet.
Is Froyo meant to fix the lag issue on the Galaxy I9000? if so great, will wait, if not i guess i will have to try other avenues.

It is better but not completely gone. If you have tried one of the latest firmwares like jm6 etc then you will see they have definitely improved things. The reports from people using the leaked froyos are the same basically, its definitely improved but not gone completely. I doubt they are going to change their file system, they will keep using samsungs RFS which seems to be the cause of some of the lag.
I am not sure what firmware you are running , probably jf3? the original? well things improve a lot over that but if you want it really snappy then you will probably be looking at a 3rd party fix but I'd hold off until froyo unless it is really bothering you currently, you never know what they might slip in at the end and no point in mucking around now if you are going to flash to froyo later anyway.
Cyanogen is coming out for the galaxy too... so that will be a big speed increase, cyanogen have decided to use the 3rd party fix of changing the native file system to ext4 and doing away with samsungs filesystem.
I'm using the native ext4 file system and that combined with jm6.. the phone is a different beast than when I got it.

I Have no issues in rooting the phone as long as what i change it to is stable and wont cause any issues with the phones hardware down the track.
I read an article that mentioned that changing the way the file system accesses the memory may cause excessive load and burn out the memory quicker, which I’m not really sure would be the case plus how long do you keep a phone? 3 years ~ would it really burn out that quick?

Ahh you got a more recent firmware than what my phone was shipped with. xfjm6 is what I am running and it is pretty decent also the first firmware to include the GPS fixes. I don't really think the issue of killing the NAND is an issue. The nand in this case is managed so the wear and tear of it is hardware based so changing the file system should have no impact in that regard. I'd try upgrading to xfjm6 and see how you think it feels without applying a lagfix, some people think its fine without doing anything, even I was fine with it but I am just the type that knows if it can go faster without causing poblems I will do it. The delays on that firmware are really just load times when loading apps, and we are talking no more than a second really. Many consider this perfectly acceptable, I mean we have load times on our PC's that are far more powerful. Changing the file system just makes the load times more snappy etc but it generally makes the phone just feel a bit nicer to me. I also trust a file system like ext4 more than samsungs rfs, ext4 is open and based on file systems that have been around a long time and function well... RFS is closed and already demonstrating its not as good.
haha, I would normally be right into it flashing firmware’s etc but as this is a work phone as well I have been a bit more cautious.
I think I will give xfjm6 a go as I would like the phone to be a bit more snappier, I don’t want to be a pain but can I ask you ; what (if any) program did you use to backup the stock firmware of your phone, as I would like to backup the stock phone and keep it in-case it all goes pear shaped.
Also with the froyo release soon, will I have to flash back to the standard to update to froyo or will it just be a standard update through kies ?
+1 I am interested in what can be done to completely back up the phones firmware etc, so if anything goes wrong it can go back to the way it was when purchased for warranty etc...

Hmm, a bit dissapointing, i seem to possibly have the stock firmware that doesnt allow the three button "download mode", i managed to root the phne ok, but cannot put it into DL mode.
A quick web search showed loads of people having the same issue... not cool, i want to flash my phone lol any ideas anyone ?
Tried various combos for putting it in DL mode, taken the battery out after every attempt.

Hi you tried the following form a terminal app on the device?
I guess im abit worried if i cant use a hardware button combo to put me into download mode - what happens if my flash turns pear shaped as i wont be able to get into DL mode again.
how common are mis-flashes so to speak, in specific flashing to xfjm6 .

How the heck do I get Kies to recognise it? I have changed the usb connection settings to " ask for connection" but it just sits there at connecting the device.
