I was running 4.1.2 (rooted/ running the official firmware although). I took it to the vodafone store in queen st (after cleaning up the binary counter and making sure the download mode reads official/ count = 0). The guy there told me that he's never heard of this issue before (I'd assume that he didn't want to scare off the customers there).

I got back the phone after 4 days (pretty impressive !). The repair notes read PBA RPLCD with some other wierd notes - I guess they're the tests carried out after replacing the PBA. No problems after that.

Thats interesting, samsung has been saying that 4.1.2 is the "fixed" version and you still had the Sudden Death..

True! But I came across few other customers who still had this issue after updating to 4.1.2 (I had the butter smooth ROM on my phone before getting the 4.1.2 firmware from sammobile.com and flashing it)

jeffnz: it doesn't sound like SDS if he was able to reset counter as SDS is just that, dead but you can get into download mode.
Also it may have been beyond the fix in the 4.1.2 rom's, I wouldn't be too concerned as from all the reading on XDA it seems the fixes are working for the majority.

I very much hope so..

Interesting, the guy in the Vodafone shop in Albany knew all about SDS when I talked to him about it, but I got the impression that he had done his own research rather than it being company education.

Yes.. That was a bit shocking. When I told him about this issue he gave me a look like I told him that NZ was a part of the Americas.

I am runing 4.1.2 and have the sudden freeze issue. Upto 6 times a day is the record. Just got prompted for a firmware update........ Maybe just maybe that might help

Yes, apparently there's an update released this week. Apply that and if it doesn't fix it, service time...

24 hours without a crash, so looking promising. The 48 hours before this update was pushed out I would have 10+ freezes. How are others looking?

I too used to get multiple freezes during the day, forever pulling out the battery....

I installed the update just received the other day, and can confirm I too have not had a single freeze since.....so far.....

Looks promising.

I too can confirm, that since the latest update pushed out (friday night).. i have not had a single crash or freeze.. this down from 50+ per day... I was looking at getting it serviced, but with the release of the S7 in a weeks time, was thinking of putting up with it and buying the new S4.

slightly off topic... i downloaded the eMMC Check and it said SDS Chip - INSANE - YES.. no idea what they meant, but on the XDA forums it said my firmware was one of the ok' ones..

Take your phone back, it's munted. A software update isn't capable of fixing it.

I had my mainboard swapped out last week.

Take your phone back, it's munted. A software update isn't capable of fixing it.

I had my mainboard swapped out last week.

I would generally agree however no crashes for 72 hours now. Going to keep an eye on it. Can't really send in for service if I can't reproduce the issue

I too would have agreed, and I too was getting similar amounts of freezing and random reboots....but I can confirm since the update, not only have I not had a single freeze or random reboot, but the device is actually running much faster, more responsive.

Much happier, no longer any need to upgrade to the sgs4.

So to update my story. After waiting 13 working days for my phone to be repaired by Samsung I find, after following up with the service sentre that the phone was fixed in 4 days and retured to the store in which I purchased it... this was not the Samsung booth I returned it to for repair...

Talk about incompetence, I'm not sure who is at fault, the service center or the Samsung sales people or me for not taking it directly to the store where I bought it.

The service documents note "vf. waked up. rebuilt imei, rf calibrated. upgraded software. fully function checked. calls on air tested."

'Waked up' seems to indicate that my fault was not SDS. Will wait for a few days to see if its really fixed.

Just had a similar issue but mine is a 32G so not SDS prone. I have sent it in for repair but my IMEI was not the same as it was supposed to be. Bit of reading and it appears my EFS folder had been corrupted. I would advise anyone to back up their EFS file/folder and keep it somewhere safe like dropbox. Use KTool app or similar.

My wife's S3 is having problems with locking up frequently and the battery life is terrible (like 1hr screen time before dying). I have done a full wipe and reflashed a stock rom. Unfortunately it's now running 4.1.2 so doesn't seem to be dying rapidly. Is there a way to force it and get a repair?
