I've done a bit of a U-turn on the Pixel. While I’m fully on board with Google’s new approach to building and supporting high quality android hardware, they have simply under-spec’ed their first offering relative to price. While the software experience looks great, the hardware is basically a re-worked HTC 10, with only half the speakers, and priced around $500 higher. Now looking 12 months out to 2017!

It is often not the best idea to go for the 1st generation of these devices. The second and 3rd generations are usually significantly better, as they fix the problems with the first version. Pricing I suspect will be one of those problems, because Apple products tend to be worth the Premium, with a long support period and good build quality and reliability. The Jury is out on this phone, but it is ugly IMO as a designer. I would only buy if it was cheap.

Ah, yes, the bezels. Why Google, why?

On one hand, the push towards bezel-less is awesome

On the other hand, using Samsung's edge phones infuriated me even trying them in the store.

The software can make it so if it is held by the screen, it won't affect the touch screen. The iphone 8 is likely to be almost all touch screen on the front, so it is the way it is heading.

I'm very conflicted.

The Pixel solves the two major complaints I had with the 6p:

- slow-ish camera

- only 3GB RAM

But also has the following two new down-sides:

- no front facing speakers

- that fat ugly chin!!!!

And all these at a much higher price.

I guess I'll wait for the reviews and then decide.

I would not update from a nexus 6p.

Well not for the price.  Can you live another year with the nexus 6p if the answer is yes then wait till next year

I don't have a 6P, but if I did I wouldn't give up for Pixel - you drop screen size, hardware thickness increases, and you lose stereo front facing speakers.

Worthwhile AMA on reddit. The lowlights photos on the pixel are insane. Finally a camera to rival the Samsung phones? If so I might just switch.

Hmm. Going to the Google Store for the Pixel has changed from showing it unavailable, to not even showing the phone

Yeah also noted that, was hoping it was going to change to available sometime soon as well...

I asked Google when we would see the Pixel XL device in NZ, just to see what the reply would be, and I received the following...

'...I understand that you’re eager to explore our Pixel xl devices, as these are one of the best smartphones in the market. I really wish I could send one to you right away. I see that this device is yet to be launched in your country.

We’ll take this as a feedback, work along with our Store team and try our best to make these devices available World-Wide. We are working towards expanding our business in different countries. I’m positive that these devices will be available in your country soon.

I’ve an alternate option. You can have it ordered by your friends or family in the available countries and have it shipped to you or you could also check with any 3rd party retailers.

I hope this information is helpful to you!...'.

Sometime I feel the likes of Google, Motorola, Amazon and Netflix think we are a part of the tech 3rd world  in fact the 3rd world will most likely have the Pixel now..

I reckon they delay for NZ will be supply issues. They don't have (or don't think they have) enough stock to launch in all markets.

But, given the general sentiment towards the price, I suspect that they may have more stock than they think.

Could agree more re price. If my S7 were to suddenly burst into flames, as much as I would like the Pixel, I would go for the Oneplus 3 given it is $600 cheaper than the equivalent-sized Pixel.

Anyone on a Nexus 6P thinking of upgrading or waiting for the next one after Pixel?

Waiting, still some life in the 6P yet, plus the front firing speakers are excellent

Hey Adam what are the prices in Australia?

Does it start from $1079 for the 32GB Pixel?
