Apparently you need root for tasker and similar programs to put the phone into flight mode. I want to do that every night, so I might as well automate it. Losing warranty could be an issue, wonder if it would affect phone insurance.

timmmay, why do you want to put it into flight mode specifically? most profile schedulers will allow you to configure wifi, gps, 3g and other options individually so all you need to set is a night (sleep) profile that turns off all the services and does not synch. this gives you a pseudo flight mode

also, tasker is only as complex as you make it out to be. someone's advice to me on a good way to set up profiles is to go through a typical day. when i had done that thinking, i discovered i only needed 4 profiles

1) sleep (time based)
2) home (wifi based)
3) work (schedule based, mon-fri 8-5)
4) if not 1, 2 or 3 then this profile

Good point tilde - all I want to do is turn of all the radios, to stop people waking me up and to save battery. I'll give tasker a go tonight :)

NFC tags are very easy, PM me as I can send you a couple free of charge. All you do is download a free NFC app from playstore, program tag, (its very simple) stick the tag by your bed or light switch, switch NFC on in phone then all you do is pass phone over it to activate and again when you wakle up to de activate, simple really don't need any program skills :)

check out the vid about the app here

I can't figure out why Google took the flight mode app access out in 4.2. It is one of my most used features. Having to click through three menus to turn on flight mode drives me insane.

I just re-rooted my S3 now that I am on 4.2.2 to allow single click and NFC activated flight mode.

I got some for my S3 last year but haven't used them for ages. Yes they do cool things and quite cheap from overseas, think I got mine from Aliexpress.

Thanks Jeff, I appreciate that, I'll have a play :) I tend to turn all the features off that would receive NFC tags, but that sounds pretty low power.

Going to have a play with tasker, but it seems to turn GPS and one of the radios on and off I need root. Anyone had problems getting root with the S4? Looks simple enough...

I know it's a bit silly to buy a phone with all these features and turn half of them off, but I like having the capabilities to use when I want them.

Hairy - flight mode is in that drop down menu thingy isn't it?

Rooting is fairly simple but can be daunting given all the warnings but reading is your friend. I posted some links a couple of pages back that had all the file links and instructions but its pretty bullet proof,

If you are concerned with warranty you can get triangle away and just download a stock full rom and it resets counters so they can't tell if its been rooted.

Yes. It is in the drop down menu which brings up a confirmation to click. I use it up to 10 times a day sometimes. That is 10 or 15 extra taps. He who dies with the least number of key presses wins!

We have NFC tags in the car. Note that turning on flight mode turns NFC off but you can use a secure settings task to turn NFC back on once you turn flight mode on...

The best S4 rooting instructions are the ones on XDA developers, right? Good to know I can flash it back, figured as such, unless I do something really stupid.

I'll probably leave off for a while, make sure I need it first. I can hit the buttons manually for a while :)

Couple of basic question:
- If I root then all that changes is the ability to have root access - ie unix su command? And that access can be given to apps?
- If I mess things up and do a restore how much of my settings, icon layouts, etc are saved by google? Do I have to set the phone up from scratch or is it mostly preserved?

I'd rather there was one authoritative guide to rooting the S4... now I have to choose which is best!
