That said, they do sometimes ping travelers returning with newish used goods. Friend of mine (true!) bought golf clubs o'seas and brought them back undeclared. They queried him and he claimed they left NZ with him, and somehow they were able to know he left with one checked back and came back with two. Clubs seized - he had to basically buy them back.

I've heard similar stories with folks bringing back skis.

But those are very different items to a cellphone in your pocket.

I think he's referring to the poor 3.5mm/adapter headphone output volume, and the flakiness of the adapter itself.

For some reason this doesn't seem to apply to the regular Pixel 2 (I'm guessing because it's HTC made... but then again the larger one is LG made - and V-series DAC etc??)

However I don't think this relates to the bluetooth audio, which was awful on the original Pixel - and is allegedly much better on both of the 2nd gen. Pixels.

In regards to the display, I don't think it's as bad as originally thought - more just not quite as good as a Samsung OLED (which sadly are being hogged by Apple and Samsung), and obviously pOLED has poor viewing angle issues. However display seems much nicer than the V30 from all accounts I've read.

Check out this informative reddit post which explains in detail how the issue is more software-based and less hardware-based. I suspect the angry nerds of reddit (a good portion of Pixel customers) will leave enough feedback for several customers worth and may have a small amount of sway;

kryptonjohn:If the phone is unboxed, charged, with SIM and some calls on it you'd be aboveaveragely honest to declare it.

The last time we did it we only returned with one phone each and I think you only need to declare stuff over $700

If you ask someone else to carry two phones and not declare the one over $700 you may be asking them to risk a large fine.

A painted back over metal, that feels sort of like plastic and could chip when dropped, when they could have used plastic and had wireless charging is quite bizarre. It is a nice phone and runs pure android, but they are comparing it to an iphone 7 generation device. If they are around the same price, I think I would go the iphone route. Otherwise I quite like the LG and samsung offerings.

As I see it, compared with LG V30, the Pixel XL2 betters the V30 in following areas:

the Google software experience
free unlimited original quality photo and video storage
stereo speakers
a slightly larger battery
it doesn't have a glass back -ie 50% less glass to shatter on a drop

Whereas, the LG V30:

is much less expensive (by a significant $500+!!!)
shares the same screen, but has smaller physical dimensions and is lighter;
looks much better (subjective, I know)
has a headphone jack and a high quality DAC
has a better waterproof rating
has expandable storage
has a secondary wide-angle lens
Wireless charging

If I were buying today, as much as I would love the pure android experience, I'd opt for the LG over the Pixel.

That being said, LG has a horrible reputation for throwing its customers under the bus as it did recently to people who own phones just at the 12 month mark.

The dongles are on par with the iPhone 8 and S8/Note8's

The Pixel 2/iPhone 8 have a slightly more powerful amp, but the S8/Note8 has support for 24-bit audio

Also the Pixel 2's dongle will work with any USB Type-C port (unlike the HTC and Motorola's analogue ones)

Both the Pixel 2s have the same dongle, PhoneArena probably got a dud

Brilliant software, but Google's hardware isn't up to the flagship prices they are charging. When the first Pixel was released it fell short, so I hoped with Pixel 2 they would deliver a phone I would want to buy. Now, I'm waiting on September 2018 and round number three.
