One thing I forgot to mention is where is Skype? Why does symbian have it and not android?

I believe its coming, but for the meantime Skype made some stupid exclusive agreement with a US carrier and the app is locked to them.

Fring and Nimbuzz can do Skype calls.

I have had mine since Thursday. I do use the phone as an mp3 player, GPS, web surfing etc but feel I am a relatively low-tech phone user who just loves cool gadget stuff. However I am totally blown away by this phone. Have not experienced Android before and comparing this to my former phone (Nokia 5800 XM), which until last Thursday I thought was a pretty cool phone, this is incredible. It's not just the amazing OS, I really like the form factor - the 5800 seems so clunky now, because it's a relatively thick phone. Can't wait for 2.2 FroYo.

Oh for sure, moving from an N95, I've found this phone to be amazing. The large screen, the brightness is amazing, and the slimness is amazing and something you have to see in the flesh. While Samsung aren't known for their updates, I think if I never saw another update for this phone I'd be happy. Having said that, I'd be super stoked if this gets froyo and gets two to five times faster. That'd be simply amazing!

As with all good Androids, you need to import it from Clove or the like if you want it now :)

Otherwise, a few shops on Pricespy have them but are changing $1250+

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

What's involved in the upgrade process too - is it pretty straightforward, or do you have to blow everything away, apply 2.2, and then restore your apps etc?

And once they push the Froyo update out to their devices, will they then start shipping them directly with Froyo?

And does Froyo work correctly with TouchWz 3.0?

From what I know, dunno about am actual date, apart from rumors of "around summer (northern hemisphere)", so presumably within the next couple of months.

Would it ship with 2.2 once it's out? Can't say either. It wouldn't surprise me if it didn't, I know it's something Nokia never did.

And I would also assume that if Samsung released 2.2 for the Galaxy S, it would be compatible with TouchWiz 3.0, which I've found to be really sweet.

Yes for the blow everything away, but with sync everythign with your google account first, then login, then goto market place and contacts etc and it'll all sync back onto your phone :) easy as!!!

i guess they will, I'm presuming 2.1 will be sometime in September/October, since they are still testing it, but we'll have to see, probably the same time for a NZ release too

Can someone please clarify for me the connectivity specs, re: Vodafone vs Telecom vs 2degrees; which provider uses which frequencies, and which provider has the best deal for data/speed.

I'll mostly use Wi-Fi at home and where I can find it, but having GPS functionality (for example) would be very handy!!

As far as I know, all versions of the Samsung Galaxy S available for order now are UMTS/HSPA at 900MHz and 2100MHz (ie Vodafone and 2degrees). An XT compatible version should be available later in the year from Telstra in Oz or AT&T in the US.

Thanks N4 - sorry, you're right about it being a bit off-topic; was just after a general steer on whether I should stick with Vodafone, or move to XT.

And I did actually mean GPS; having turn-by-turn navigation, or even a quick-ish Google Maps would be very handy when traveling!!
