Fizz: Hi guys, quick question to those that have bought a 16GB i9000 from mobicity. What UI does it come with? is it the standard Samsung UI or a particular carrier's UI? Also are all the preloaded apps already on the fone and working? just asking as I had a bad experience with a local importer and not looking 2 repeat any mistakes. Or is it less hassles to just get it from Voda although I'm not 2 keen on what they charging for just an 8GB.

Thanks for the response :) Reason I asked regarding carriers is that some independents get fones from overseas "unlock it" but still retain the Carriers UI eg. AT&T or T-Mobile etc.
I bought a 16GB i9000 got sent a T-Mobile Vibrant instead with pretty much all the standard apps including Swype not installed. Needless 2 say I was pissed. As the vibrants are cheaper than the i9000 16GB and that was what I paid 4. Anywayz supplier admitted their mistake tried 2 source a i9000 for me but said they can't got a refund and am basically looking at my options again.

Not the one I used. I used the method mentioned in the Whirlpool forum, or the same one posted on the Samsung Australia Facebook page:

1.Start Kies, Connect your phone with kies mode, and click :Upgrade Firmware.it will show something like : the device can't be upgraded....

2.than shutdown the upgrade window ( dont shut the kies windows!!!_)

4.Click the "Upgrade Firmware" again!!! Enjoy your new phone !!!
The file in step 3 overwrites the details stored in regedit. I went back there and confirmed. This (regedit) was also the method I used to confirm my current firmware.

One thing I read, make sure your phone has a min 60% battery life. Backup anything you want - my phone went right back to square one, like I'd just opened the box. There's an application to backup your APN numbers (APN backup - it's on the Market). There's a sticky post in the Android forum with all the APN numbers anyway, so you can grab those and manually enter it all over again.

Also, reboot your computer too. You don't want that having some little hissy fit while you're mid way through putting new firmware on your phone.

I've never updated firmware, so I didn't know what to expect. It took about 12-15 minutes I suppose - to go through all the stages (four I think - it's shown on the Kies screen). Naturally it takes over your phone and different screens pop up. But, really, just leave it to do it's thing and come back to it when you hear the usual boot up jingle. It really is simple.

So i just used this method, now my phone says its a i9000m, any way of getting it back to being an i9000? is there any positives/negatives?

Yes. I then used Odin and flashed back to the original firmware I had before running the 3BR fix. You'll need to get the firmware from the Samsung firmware site, you'll need to register first: http://www.samfirmware.com/apps/blog/ You'll have to download Odin if you've not already got it, and get the PIT 512 file.

Odin was a breeze to use once I'd realised that a COM port had been established between my phone and PC. I'd been expecting to see the drivers installing but that must have happened and some other stage when I'd connected the phone to the PC before.

Here's the instructions I followed for using Odin, from the XDA forum. Plus a few of my own little comments added in (for my benefit).

1.Flash

Firmware using Odin.
Note: This will in (almost) all cases erase all your data and applications (includind root!). It will NOT touch the internal or external SD card.
Note: It appears now, that in some newer batches (originally only in Canada, but reports have come in from Australia and Germany), the phone has the three-button combination for download-mode disabled (VolumeDown+Home+Power or alternatively Home+Power on some phones). Check if the download-mode combo works BEFORE flashing! Please refer to FAQ#A12 and T&T#23 for a fix for the download mode if it doesn't work on your phone!
IMPORTANT Temporary Note!(I9000M ONLY!): There have been two reports of device specific issues of the Canada Bell Vibrant (I9000M) when flashing and running XXJP3 pre-rooted and applying the OneClick Lagfix. As of now, it is unclear what causes the issue but I would advise I9000M owners to NOT FLASH the I9000XXJP3 firmwares and to use CFLagFix by Chainfire instead of RyanZA's OneClick fix if you do insist to run XXJP3!
Requirements:
-Odin3 version 1.0 or version 1.3

(Note: Odin should be on the system partition (the partition where windows is installed) to avoid possible issues)
-".PIT" file for the Samsung Galaxy S

(See FAQ#C9 for the version to use!)
-USB cable
-Desired firmware package
Procedure: ** The order is VERY important - Odin MUST be running before connecting the phone (in Download mode) to the PC **
1.Open ODIN. (And close Kies, if you have it open. It is important to have ODIN open BEFORE connection the phone via USB!)
2.Select the PDA/Modem/CSC/.PIT files in Odin. (.PIT and PDA are required. CSC and Modem are HIGHLY recommended. They may be necessary depending on the PDA! Try flashing all three BEFORE reporting bugs, if you only used one initially!)
3.Check the "Re-Partition" checkbox.
4.Turn the phone into the download mode by pressing and holding VolumeDown+Home+Power. (you get the Yellow Android with the shovel)
5.Connect your phone with your computer and wait until the drivers are installed. (you might not see anything, but if Odin shows the COM port connection you're good to go to step 6)
6.When the drivers are installed, click Start.
7.The phone will be flashed and once it?s finished, it will boot up. (Do NOT disconnect the usb-cable, remove the battery or otherwise interrupt this process!)
8.You have successfully flashed your phone.

Also, for flashing back to the Optus JG4 firmware, I only needed the PDA and PIT files. No Modem or CSC files were required.

Can anyone tell me what the NZ firmware is? I remember it was JH2 (i think) but i can't remember the prefix to that, or does it even matter?

you should have used the ADB Method i used.. (posted earlier)

you can restore your region settings on Kies.. and then update again..

some have founr 3BR is retained that way.. others have not!

if you flash to jpk will it have any ui changes or branding additions for europe.. (i have the NZ new version of the phone)

Seems good so far. The NZ phones have a Vodafone-specific flash but I don't know what it does. There is no branding on the leaked JPK so far. It may change your phone's region to Korea though, you may want to backup /efs/nv_data.bin.
