I've got cousins in Aus who can ship the phone over, but they're in NZ at the moment.

Earliest I could get a 32GB model is the 13th or 14th.

My Huawei idiot X3 freebe potato phone from 2 deg died on xmas day when it got left in the back seat of my brother car.

Haha, it got too hot and started "shutting down functions", most have never started again.

There's a lot of good info in this thread about getting the right phone from the right place.

Maybe OP would do a wee summary in the 1st post?

I don't know if this has been asked or not, but why is the Nexus 5 so much more expensive in New Zealand?

I mean, in America it's $350 (just under $430 NZD) for the 16GB model. That's the google play store price that it was introduced at in America.
But in New Zealand it was introduced at $700. WTF? Are 2degrees just putting up the prices because they own the Nexus 5 monopoly here in NZ?

I was thinking of buying one in America and then using YouPay (NZ post service) to ship it here in NZ, but I don't know if it'll work with NZ carriers.

If you don't buy from the Play Store, it's not as cheap. For example to buy the phone only (not on contract) from Best Buy, it is $450 USD ($550 NZD, + $80 GST, + shipping to NZ). So the issue isn't with "New Zealand", it's just that the phone is only super-cheap via the Play Store.

If I get a friend in California to buy a N5 (D821 32G) from Google Play and have it delivered to him for onwards posting to me in NZ, will the phone successfully operate using my current Vodafone Sim card?

ie will the phone be unlocked?

I can see nothing on the US based website suggesting otherwise

The phone will be unlocked, nexus devices are never locked.
Just make sure it is the 821 model not the 820.

I caved in and went with the warehouse stationery special (although chch only has about 4 white phones left now - I use to work there, their stock management is still rubbish)

faaaaaar out this is a nice phone.

The phone will be unlocked, nexus devices are never locked.
Just make sure it is the 821 model not the 820.

It's the same author as Unlock with Wifi but he rewrote the app from the ground up for Android 4.0+.

Essentially you can configure trusted wifi or bluetooth devices so that your phone is unlocked e.g. swipe to unlock or whatever. When you're away from said wifi or bluetooth device your phone locks e.g. pin to unlock

It only works with pin unlock unless you're rooted where you can use face unlock or pattern unlock

Not really related to the Nexus 5, but I'm using it on my Nexus 5 so whatever :D

I used to use this app - worked well enough, but I got tired of the pin unlock when away from WiFi - it's just too slow compared to pattern. I find that pattern unlock is virtually instantaneous, so don't mind using it all the time now.

What sucks though is that developer recently re-wrote the app and is requiring users who have paid for original app to pay again for the upgraded version. Given I paid around $6 for the app, it's pretty disgusting he now is looking to second dip punters. Won't use his apps now as matter of principle.

Buying a new N5 via Google Play in the USA seems to be more of a headache than I originally thought

My mate didn't have a Google account, but has now created one.

Reading the small print is a nightmare.

It seems that he needs a Google Wallet account to purchase product. This means he can't use Paypal.

Has anyone here in NZ purchased a N5 from Google using a US based account?

If so, how did the transaction proceed?

Or should I give up my dream of acquiring one of these phones cheaply?

IMHO Its not worth it. I bought one from playstore but sold it when it arrived in the country. After you've paid duty/gst you only save $120 on the cost of getting one from 2 degrees. And when you factor in a 2 year warranty that 2 degree give you Vs no warranty from playstore Its a no Brainer for me.

Plus the price will only go down from now. Someone in this forum reported the N5 for sale for $600 for a brief period over Xmas. It will happen again.

Perhaps the only reason I can see of persisting with playstore would be needing a 32gb which 2 degree don't sell

I got mine from Warehouse stationary at $600. Mostly because it does the right LTE bands. (Remember, the US Nexus 5 doesn't do the right bands for LTE here, so you'll be stuck on 3g)

The USA based Google Support team have advised my friend in California that: "The Nexus 5 D821 model is only available outside of North America."

So I am guessing that he can't purchase the D821 regardless
