LSWater: Hey guys,

I was directed here after making a post requesting some advice on purchasing a Nexus 5 through the Aus Playstore.

Essentially I want to purchase the phone through the Aus Playstore as you probably all know it is a lot cheaper through there, but the shipping situation is where I'm after some advice.

I plan on having the phone sent to a friend in Aus who will then send it to me in Auckland, New Zealand. I understand Auspost won't send anything overseas with lithium. But there are other companies that do, PackAndSend for example quoted me $98.00 haha.

So has anyone bought their phone through the Aus Playstore and had it send over somehow? How did it go? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I am just looking to save a couple hundred bucks, and the novelty of purchasing from the actual Google Playstore kind of appeals to me (silly I know since I'm better off with the CG Act. behind me purchasing from NZ)

Hm.. firstly, I would double check with Pack&Send.
I called them about a month ago about shipping nexus 5, and they said that unless you can take out the battery, they won't ship it. They recommended contacting DHL.

For me, I decided shipping cost + custom fee wasn't just worth it getting it from Australia. Also, as mentioned by another user here, if your phone arrives DOA, it could be a huge pain.

FYI Pack Send was what my friend used to ship my Nexus 5 to me. But again I would caution against buying from the AU store due to Google's policy unless you want to go through the same hassles I did.

Whenever I have my headphones plugged in and I get a text notification (or any notification really) the noise plays through my headphones and through my speakers on my N5. Is this intentional and is there any way to stop this? I only want the noise coming through my headphones when they're plugged in.

This is probably going to affect very few people but I will put it here in case it even helps one person.

Situation:

You have a Nexus 5 and are travelling in the US using T-Mobile's $30/month plan with unlimited data (well up to 2.5GB of 4G data), unlimited texts and 100 minutes.

You try to tether your N5 which is clearly something useful to do.

TMO has blocked tethering on the N5 on plans that do not include tethering and instead will redirect you to a TMO product page.

I encountered this problem myself and really didn't know what was going on but it did not cause me too much grief since most of the time I had wifi access anyway.

That requires root since you have to modify a SQL file on the phone.

Apparently it can be done without root using ADB

Connect your phone via USB to your computer and execute

adb shell content insert --uri content://settings/global --bind name:s:tether_dun_required --bind value:i:0

Enter

adb shell content query --uri content://settings/global --where "name='tether_dun_required' AND value=0"

to verify that the entry was successfully added. You’ll still need to change the APN settings to use IPv4.

Also I found out that SIP calls didn't work on the N5 either. I tried Vonage and Localphone with no luck (and both worked fine over WiFi).

Apparently you need to change your APN settings to IPV4 for SIP/VOIP to work as well but I didn't find out until I left the US so I could not check.

But as I will be over there again soon I am going to try it out then.

Awesome info thanks lchiu. We are off to the US in April and I was looking at T-Mobile for a sim card for the N5. We have free WiFi at our hotels so was wondering whether we would actually need it. Will keep in mind though.

This is on every Android phone I've used. I used SoundAbout to fix this problem and it's working fine for me.

Don't drop your N5. Two weeks after shattering my screen, PHone Bitz and ConnectNZ have been unable to locate replacement screens in NZ ...

I used T-Mobile in the US last year. Highly recommend you go with AT&T instead. T-Mobile have a terrible network

I used T-Mobile in the US last year. Highly recommend you go with AT&T instead. T-Mobile have a terrible network

Depends where you are.

I have used TMO successfully in LA, San Francisco and Las Vegas. I even had pretty much uninterrupted coverage all the way down from San Franccisco to LA via Interstate 5 (was streaming music from Google the entire time in my car).

That being said it was hopeless at CES when I was in the convention centre. I ended having to use a friend's Verizon mobile wifi hotspot all the time to have any sort of web acccess. But that's a pretty uusual situation regarding the number of concurrent users.

Verizon do have the best network in the US. The trouble is we can't use it with our phones.

I haven't tried the WS charging pad, but it does seem expensive.

I bought this from DX.com for about $20US with free shipping. It works fine. Sometimes if the phone is not properly on the pad it doesn't charge, but generally it's very easy to get the phone on the right spot.

Shipping took about 3 weeks mind.

Rather than get the warehouse stationery charger, why not get the genuine LG wireless charger for your LG phone from Amazon - it is a similar price to the warehouse stationery product landed in NZ.

I purchased two of these from Amazon and they are brilliant. You don't have to worry too much about placement, you just plonk the N5 down and it automatically starts charging.
