the telcos have essentially given up on MMS

Not all of them have given up on MMS. Some carriers seem to be finding a new use for these MMS stacks that are sitting there doing nothing. For example, on Voda, if you send an SMS to a group of recipients, there is a good chance this will turn up at the other end as an MMS. I sent one the other day and the recipient on Spark could not view the message, as it arrived as MMS. Same goes for multipart messages to single recipients, I have seen these use the MMS stack for delivery.

Oh, there's heaps of cool tech to exploit in that space, I completely agree. MMS could be incredible for its near-universal compatibility in a world of everyone using a different messenger app - But only if it were offered as a capped-rate service plan for unlimited/reasonable usage ala SMS, and with higher-quality images. Used it every day when I was on a staff plan and didn't have to pay 50c per message. In my experience, the telcos' views, for better or worse, are that OTT has killed all potential for MMS. This isn't helped by the percentage of higher-ups who exclusively use iPhones and iMessage.

Until the telcos' technology teams convince the marketing/segment teams that they're blindly pushing their customers to OTT services and losing revenue, MMS usage will continue to decline for no good reason other than price.

Hi, my wife has the Smart Ultra and has had issues with it. She wants to upgrade to something with a metal body. Would you all recommend the M3 note or should she go for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro? She wants a good phone with a metal body that won't cause her any issues with build quality.

That would be cool, but I am pretty slammed tomorrow. Friday might be better if possible?

Hi. I see there are a lot of experienced users of the Meizu M3 note on this forum. I have one and like it a lot.

I bought the phone from the new New Plymouth store. Great service in there! I am having trouble with the Spark MMS settings though.

I can't send or receive mms.

I have been into Spark.....no help there.

Can anyone who is using the M3 note tell me what the spark MMS settings should be.

Thanks

Scott

Hmm, we've had a few reports of being unable to *receive* MMS on Spark, but the engineering team had trouble narrowing it down as some units worked fine despite identical settings to the problematic ones. No other reports of being unable to send or receive to date, though. Meizu are looking into it, although to be straight up, I do not expect a fix for this in the immediate future.

As much of a headache as it can be to change habits, especially when there is a need to educate the other party, the telcos have essentially given up on MMS. You would be better off in general by switching to an over-the-top chat service like WhatsApp for photo sharing, as the photos are of significantly higher quality and do not cost 50c a pop to send.

If MMS is an absolutely must-have for you, you can of course return the unit for a no-hassle refund.

And here was me thinking the other party had 'butt dialed' a message to me. I've looked at these blank MMS's when on the go and hadn't given them much thought.

Reviewing them after reading the above, I note they some had come through a short while after an SMS from those parties. When I quizzed two of them this morning they shrugged shoulders and then showed me what they'd sent. In both instances they included an emoji at the end of their message, which wasn't not included in the received message. One sender is on Spark with a Samsung device and the other a 6S Plus on Vodafone. Which would suggest it's not necessarily carrier dependent. That said, I'm on 2 Degrees.

Found a new issue.

Just now I was listening to a track on Spotify, on full volume (not modified by the engineers code provided in this thread). The speaker went distorted and it stopped playing sound. A reboot doesn't fix the issue, but a power off and on fixes it but very temporarily.

Doing testing with the ring tone and the phone speaker is definitely faulty. When I tap the back of the phone and it works (but very tinny) and cuts out again. The phone hasn't been dropped and I even have it in a wallet case. I think the speaker is poked and it's either vibrated off an internal connection, or my handset is defect, OR the music popped the speaker some how.

Is this a known issue? My phone no longer rings.

NikT how do I get this fixed? Like I said, I haven't dropped my phone, ever. I'd hate to be without a phone for a week or so because of "Damage Assessment".

Edit: When I power off and power on the phone again, the speaker works but on a very low volume. Turn it up and it craps itself again. I hope this isn't related to the software update.

M3 Note has a swap warranty. Pop into a PB store and they'll sort you out on the spot. :)

Do I need the invoice? Or can your team use the serial number?

Has anyone found an issue when sending texts, as in when you send one and the recipient replies, instead of the reply text going into the sms thread you started, it starts its own?

No, the nearest I got what when someone wasn't in my contacts list then it seems to get separated.

That time the texts were continually put under Notices instead of Personal. The only way to get them under personal (family member, conversations) was to delete the messages, add him as a contact then all future messages went to Personal

<- don't ask me where I am - I haven't a clue: its a tech thing ;)
Housewife computerer: not particularly great at either.
And don't take me too seriously.

NikT:

Hey guys,

Meizu told us they'd blocked all Chinese-language push notifications to international models two weeks ago, but apparently not. Apologies! Chasing them up about it.

In the meantime, here's a new build to try - Flyme 5.1.3.2 Global

To install:

  • Download the .zip file directly to phone, or to PC and transfer over USB
  • Open the stock File Explorer app, find the .zip, tap it, hit install
  • Phone will reboot and install the new version

Contains bug fixes and stability improvements, I found it significantly improved standby time and app switching.

Also worth switching from 'Balance' to 'Performance' mode under Battery in Settings. Balance turns off two of the lower-clocked cores, so switching to Performance shouldn't have much impact on battery life, but will improve performance.

This link seems to be dead now - is an alternative link, or a newer version available?

Also, has anyone else had any success in rooting their device from the settings menu? I've tried several times with no luck - it keeps coming up with the message 'Error reaching server'.

Here's a Google Drive mirror.

New build in the works with loads of fixes - Spark MMS downloading issue has been resolved, and rooting will work through the settings menu as expected. ETA ~2 weeks.

Is there an update to a new version of Android coming at some point?
