I picked a a Galaxy S4 when I was in America. It is a slightly different model SGH-M919. I have rooted it and loaded a custom rom (wicked V7).

I really like it, the issue is I think the modem is not good T-Mobile version. M919uvuamdl Is the baseband version and it says I am connected at 4G all the time, but telecom does not have 4G yet.

Also when I do a speed test I only get 3Mbps where as on my SG II on 3G I would get around 18.

So something is not right here.

Which modem is a good one for NZ? J5? Because this is not as common a model I am finding it harder to find modems or maybe there is not other modems available.

Could it be a case of H+ being shown as 4G? In E-merica' HSPA+ was being touted as 4G so this might be why. As for the speed difference between your "S4" and Galaxy S2, I find it hard to believe your S2 would go so fast - S2's aren't DC capable are they? Maybe 18xx kbps?

Could also be network congestion, if you look at http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=111805 there are some recent XT speed tests.

Telecom S4's are getting the update to enable 4G on the 12th November. All you will need is the update & the 4G SIM to start using 4g (and a 4g plan)

If the phone's rooted do we have to download from one of the firmware sites then re-root? That's pretty easy to do.

Most likely, I think theres a way to do it while you're rooted too not sure though

I can't be sure but you can enter your phone's service mode and see if you can enable LTE/4G.

Most often you can get to this by entering *#*#4636#*#* in the dialler. There are apps that can do this if (like me) your phone won't do anything when you enter the code.

I don't know if this does anything at all, I guess I'll find out on the 12th.

Mine shows 4G on auto so being a custom Rom on phone I'm not sure if it will work as I won't receive update.

Not a biggie if I have to flash stock to get update just nuisance value

Well today my NZ brought S4 died at 50% level and just shuts down and has been doing this for the last 3 days and today I noticed the battery popped off the back cover. So looks I have a one of the dud S4 swollen batteries now I need to do a warranty job. Seems to be a worldwide fault.

Uh Oh...

S3 was the sudden death and now S4 has the Swollen Battery..

I hadnt heard of this one until now.

Its a good thing you mentioned it here coz otherwise if it had happened to me, I would have thought its a water damage or overheating or overcharging or something using related issue...

Search on goggle shows world wide fault and Samsung has acknowledged this, the issue i have they are asking to send the whole phone into a service centre when all I want is a swap over the counter foir a new battery but we have only the phone company retail stores which are not sammy. Im still looking for a way to get a over the counter battery.

The sudden death on the S3 didn't affect every phone and the battery on the S4 isn't all batteries either.
