Looks like Paul at Modaco is making good progress on a custom rom, including some optimisation to kill the occasional lags which show up. Will be tempted to try this if the 2.2 upgrade takes too long:

Some pretty nasty reports coming out about these phones now.

They are suffering from pretty severe lag in some situations.. People are getting black screens for up to 5 seconds when they go to the home screen etc.
It happens when you have a few apps running etc and seems to be once you have installed a few apps.
More sites are starting to report it now and Samsung are aware of the issue.

The internal storage is actually a SD card and some are reporting that the speed of the card is the issue as some people that have rooted the device are repoting huge speed increases if they make the phone use the nand for data storage instead of the internal sd card (though that gives huge restrictions on the amount of data that can be stored).

No official word from samsung yet but looks like it could be a nasty issue if it is a hardware issue and not fixable by a firmware update.

Anyone noticed this yet? apparently it is just a matter of when, not if....

Some people might be pretty annoyed eh, sounds like some of the Samsung bloatware is causing it, I'll get Leeshaks root file off Samdroid forums and load that on :) then rid myself of the Touchwiz stuff

Apparently there is a hack to use the full amount of RAM in 2.1 too on the same site. So be good to test that out too?

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

I don't think this is the internal storage at all. I think its Samsungs TouchWiz causing the issue, or at least something Samsung has done in the firmware or its apps. I only notice it if I don't restart the phone for >20hours. Before that its just fine, and I have a huge number of apps on there.

I am having similar sorts of issues.....occasionally. I have noticed it is only when I am running a number of apps at once, or asking the phone to do something intensive (like OCR or picture analysis such as on Google goggles) and then I suddenly turn the handset from portrait view to landscape view and the phone screen changes its orientation that it goes black and goes back to the home screen. A couple of programs are buggy like that also....it is mildly annoying but not panicking yet- hope it is a firmware or underutilization of RAM problem.

I've had a bit of lag every now and then, depending on what I'm trying to do. Really only annoyed me when I was trying to pick up a phone call and it just kinda 'hung' there for a few seconds.

Generally I use Advanced Task Killer to kill the heaps of applications that sometimes are running in the background.

Will try swapping to LauncherPro Beta, and will let you know how things go.

Anyone else noticed it seems quite picky on the avi's and wmv's it will play (or won't)?
I'm having about a 80% success rate. This is from phone memory. Might have to do some codec analysis...
All my mkv's have worked so far.

With a file explorer browsing my LAN, I can play MKV's though only via an "open as" operation again. No option to set default application. The couple of AVI's I've tried this way won't open at all, even though they work when copied to SD. In both cases you lose the ability to scroll the movie.

Streaming to the phone over DLNA/UPNP you also lose the ability to skip forward and back. Going to try tversity transcoding..

Not bad (and some of these issues might be normal), but not perfect so far.

See the Australian Samsung Website has the Galaxy S 3G specs listed as 850/1900/2100 MHz.

If this model makes it to NZ it would mean all service provider options are covered (At least partially -no 900MHz).

Bring it on Samsung NZ..

Im actually looking at getting a Galaxy S - but am concerned about the lag issues. How bad are they really ? I have a Iphone 3g at the mo so am quite used to having to restart my phone, so is simply restarting the phone say once a day wouldnt faze me to much.

Also, has ayone had any issues with the build quality of the galaxy s ?

Every now and then for a few seconds - and I have had mine on for more than a couple of days continuous.

Not bad enough to make me regret my decision, if that helps. Overall I love the phone.

Barely bothered me at all. And I love the build quality - it seems quite solid and yet really light to hold and use - feels slightly plastic-y round the back but actually feels more comfortable that way (to me anyway).

They are annoying, especially when the rest of the phone is so good, but you can live with them...
The build quality is fine, just not the same feel as something like a nexus one that feels solid.

I'd wait if I was you, if you arent in a rush, see what samsung say, if the issue is fixable etc.
Some people are saying that their phones starting off only with small lags and it got worse and worse which is what worries me.

The droid x is out almost and there should be a milestone x shortly after so if the lag issue isnt fixable on these you could look at that which maybe even better anyway....

LauncherPro was really unstable for me, plus its just plain inferior to ADW launcher. I wrote off ADW Launcher too quickly because I thought it murdered my battery, but seems I may have been too quick to chalk that up to ADW because I noted that WiFi was on (because of a bug where GPS programs are turning WiFi on, whatever setting you have in Locations for using wireless networks to determine location) the whole time I was at work.

BTW, I'll be flashing to Paul's custom ROM from Modaco today, feedback to ensue :)

I've only just got mine, and I'm coming from the iPhone.

The Android appstore is a bit of a mess unlike the Apple App Store. Android feels kinda like Windows Mobile, where there are lots of hack available, and the whole thing is a mess really. I like how the iPhone's iOS feels organised, and clean.

In terms of build quality, it doesn't even come close to the iPhone, but it's not too bad either.

I've not yet felt the lag (probably cause it's still new), but the spec is pretty impressive.

So yeah, these are my views - obviously there will be lots of people who will disagree with me.

I think the question of build quality is that plastic feels cheap to a lot of people, it feels light weight.

Metal phones like the nexus one feel heavier etc so give the impression of being more solid.

I prefer the feel of a metal phone because of that, but just because its plastic doesn't mean its build quality is bad.

Remember though, plastic phones can absorb knocks better :).
