Probably too many of us have the SGS though. My workmate is selling his Desire to get a Desire HD. I think I'll give Samsung a bit longer to fix things before ditching.

After tweaking my phone the other day, I ended up putting it all back the way it was using ClockworkMod (ROM Manager) restoring a backup I made.

Today I put another (similar) ROM on. I followed this thread on XDA. It doesn't matter how may factory resets, applying update.zip files or fluffing about, I always end up holding my breath hoping it turns out right.

And it did. This is fast. And I like the fact that now when I to recovery mode it defaults to all the options you get when going to recovery mode in ROM Manager.

Lets see how long I sit tight on this before I try the next best thing.

With this ROM it's a base ROM. And the thread provides a number of optional "modules" you might like to use. So basically you get a really fast ROM and then just add the other bits and bobs you want. There's no theme so you're not stuck with a good ROM that doesn't please you aesthetically.

Now I've played about with ROM Manager I'm a little less reluctant, but I don't expect the "holding the breath" feeling will ever really pass.

Hey lokhor. I know you asked about the music player of the ROM I've just flashed. When I use Root Explorer and pick a song I get the "Complete action using" pop up. The choices are:

Meridian

Music

Sound Player

Winamp

Meridian and Winamp I've added myself. I think Sound Player is the default as I remember. Not sure what the Music one is.

I'm hesitant to try that Rom due to the removal of all of the Samsung apps. Some of them are actually good such as the SMS, Music Player and Video Player.

I just got my i9000 8GB From VF as part of my new plan.

I have come from the HD2, and to be honest considering all the hype I am feeling a little let down.

Battery life is better than my HD2, but there are some INCREDIBLY frustrating things I have noticed:

1) No Dial or Dial End buttons. Even when I read the reviews I never thought it didn't have these
2) Proximity sensor isn't working nicely. Further to this treasure, when it doesn't undo the proximity lock in a call, when you press the middle button and unlock the screen, you don't have the same keypad options! IE I can't fecking hang up a call!!! No matter what I press I can't hang up, particularly annoying in voicemail. I end up switching off the phone.
3) I am used to being able to hit dial when I have a text message up to call the number, but now I need to hit the menu button, click more, then dial and then dial again. What a fecking waste of time!
4) I really hate the sms messaging dialog boxes
5) I presume this is fixable but I prefer my battery indicators to be a 1-100% Indicator.
6) I can't see how to determine if data is going from my wifi or 3G, or control how that works! I want all data to be sent via wifi if connected and 3g on request!
7) Sweep glass to unlock is horrendous, are there any alternatives?
8) Anyone having issues with calls going right to VM? I have 5 bars of connectivity, and yet my calls frequently never call, just go right to vm.

Anyone got a recommendation on a 2.2 Custom ROM, that is good for day to day business type use? Bluetooth is a must, so all functionality must be intact, as must be full exchange sync support?

Should I apply a lagfix to my Std Eclair ROM?

1. i think this is standard for android
2. i had this problem once, couldn't get back to my active call. i think you have entered the home screen or another app therefore you can't hang up. next time try and long press home button and then select the call so you can go back to the calling screen.
3. when on text message screen where you view all the contacts that have txt'd you, you can swipe left / right to call / txt them
4. i like this, what's wrong with it? you can try install a different messaging app eg. handcet sms
5. if you want % battery indicator in the icon on the right side of the notification/status bar you need a custom rom, however you can also install an app that will display the % battery on the left side, alternatively there are widgets that display % battery on the home screen.
6. by default it tries wifi first, only will use 3g if no wifi available.
7. widgetlocker app does this, also some custom roms may change this too.
8. unlikely phone related

if you stick with 2.1 you should apply voodoo lag fix.
if you upgrade to 2.2 you MUST uninstall voodoo lagfix (or any other lagfixes) first.
if you upgrade to 2.2 there is debate about how necessary lagfix is.

I would upgrade to 2.2 when it's available on kies, and then decide re: lagfixing. Hopefully a finely polished and heavily tested version of voodoo will be available for 2.2

If you are keen to try out a new Froyo Rom there is a good one out there by DocRambone and Kalpik on XDA Forums. It has removed a lot of the Samsung bloatware and has the default Android SMS application etc.

It has a pretty thorough guide on how to do it. Make sure you read and understand the basics of everything. If you screw up you can always flash another firmware back on it using Odin as long as you have 3 button recovery mode working. It is very important to make sure this works before embarking on and flashing adventures. You can do this by holding Vol down + home + power when your phone is off and it will come up with a little image that looks like:

Install 3g watchdog to monitor useage, it has option to disable 3d data when you go over a limit.

You can install a toggle widget to enable / disable 3g. Try quick settings app (free), apntoggle (free) or use switchpro app (~$1-2)

2) You can set it up to show a notification of new email messages, unread txt messages and missed calls.
3) I'm running this one v5f (Lite - JP6) ** also has a link to where you can apply the Voodoo lag fix, but they say you don't need any lag fix with this ROM **

Yeah the DocRambone/Kalpik custom Rom has many lagfix options that are not mandatory. It doesn't appear to have any bluetooth or corporate email problems afaik but it would pay to read through the thread or do a search to see if anyone has.

Did you flash the Full ROM lokhor? Still happy on the lite version, and glad not to have some of the stock apps - I didn't use them and always wanted to remove them anyway, so the lite version suits me.

I haven't tried out the Rom yet, I'm using JP6 with some modifications like circle battery mod and voodoo 5-pre3. I was waiting until he brought out a version with the Samsung Music Player as I really like it.
