Right... all WCDMA handsets are quand band GSM (2G) .. but not all are quad band 3G which includes both 850 and 900 3G bands.. unless its the likes of the iPhone 4G which has both 850 and 900 3G bands..

so did Telecom say it would be "Quad Band GSM" or "Quad Band 3G"?

I'd say it's more than likely to be WCDMA 850/2100.

Spoke with Samsung NZ. Basically they admitted blocking the 3 button recovery/download function on all NZ handsets. He said this was due to the fact that they did not want people to play around with it too much before Froyo arrives. The guy I spoke with (John) said that the 3 button recovery/download function will be enabled with the Froyo update in the end of November (he couldn't be completely be sure on both btw, which I find very strange).

So the point is that Samsung NZ will not accept any handsets under warranty to only enable the 3 button recovery/download mode as they don't consider it as fault. He suggested to factory reset the phone if something goes wrong, but had very little to say when I asked him if something went wrong during the update and I couldn't turn on my phone to factory reset it, apart from suggestion to send it back to Samsung to fix it...

The whole Android being an open source is somewhat being made redundant by Samsung imo. If I wanted a handset that blocks any user interference, I would have bought an iPhone.

nofam: Just out of interest, has anyone actually managed to irrevocably brick their SGS? I'm not really talking about failed hardware due to overclocking etc, but flashing custom ROMs etc - so long as you can do the 3-finger restart, are you pretty safe?

There are people on xda-developers that have managed it, either with complete black-screens (dead bootloader) or ending up with the internal SD card either damaged or so badly corrupted it can't be repaired by the flashing processes. It seems pretty rare though. There is a simple hardware hack that will get you back to download mode even if the 3-button combo isn't working, but that probably won't help if you have either of the above problems.

I purchased one on the weekend from Noel Leeming Also (got a feeling they moved quite a few as Botany and Pukekohe were the only ones with stock at the time)

And the 3 Button Downloader works fine on mine also without any mods.

I ordered one off the Noel leemings site on Monday, called them yesterday as I only just noticed the terrible reviews their site gets on Pricespy. Anyway, the woman on the phone said it was being shipped yesterday, hopefully for arrival today/tomorrow.

So either good news all round, or blatant lies for me

Now I'm concerned

Well, I wouldn't be exactly suprised if the guy was blatantly lying about it. I mean what sort of tech would suggest that lack of recovery on the phone is better for the customers. I will wait till Froyo is released and if I have no luck with that, I wouldn't hesitate to contact Samsung again. Besides, as far as I understood the recovery/download combo is not working on some models not due to the block by the suppliers, but by the hardware fault on some batches of the phone. What a joke.?

The Zoom in and out also worked sweet. Now to see the casual data rate charges on my next bill (That massive $1 that I incurred)

I don't see any mention of the 900MHz band in that quote.

networkn: I can beat that! I am trying to sync my phone to my MKI9200 Car kit and it won't do it automatically and when I send the bluetooth contacts, instead of just my activesync contacts which are all that is displayed, when I go to select all, inside are all my fecking gmail contacts!

I am starting to get really over android.

I am not sure if these problems are phone specific, brand specific, version specific (2.1 vs 2.2) or platform specific!

This seems to be phone-specific as my other Android phones allowed me to select the Groups in my Gmail I wanted to sync...and I set up 4 groups specifically to sync to my phone. On my Galaxy S I can't find a way to select these 4 groups. I get every Gmail address there is unless I tell to show ones with phone number only.....but then it leaves out the many contacts I have who I wanted to include so I could use their e-mail or other contact info....but no phone number.

Not sure what Samsung did here, but it it's a step backward....

My Galaxy S 16GB us running Froyo JP6 obtained via Kies using the reg hack. It's stock and unrooted (so far). I want to fully explore the stock firmware before replacing it with something....otherwise I have no way of know it is better, worse or no different.

I installed Launcher Pro. I like it.

The phone was running like a fast crazy mad thing until I started REALLY piling the apps on and at some point it began to bog down and lag....and REALLY lag. I tried moving all the apps i could to SD thinking they would be on FAT...and that would by-pass the RFS issue. It sort of worked. There was a temporary improvement.

Eventually, it seemed to me some of the lag was due to Launcher Pro issues...so I swapped to ADW Launcher and there was an improvement for a couple of days...and then I started taking panorama pics with the camer and feeding them through to Picsay Pro and then exporting them to facebook or wherever...and at the point the lag became *seriously* bad. By the third pic the phone was nearly unusable. I would have to shutdown and re-boot....when it finally came back.

This went on for a week or so.....and I then did a factory reset...and began re-installing only selected apps. The ones I use every day and must have. Touchwiz worked well and quickly...and so does ADW Launcher.

So far.....there is almost not lag, though I noticed Handcent SMS lags badly getting into the Settings.

I'm suspicious. I think some apps use or call something that is really laggy....or maybe they are just big apps and they lag more than small apps....with I/O being the problem (as we know) so by avoiding those apps, I can avoid the lag. I'm trying to narrow this down so I understand it better.

Whatever....my Galaxy S is going like a rocket since I did the factory reset...and I'm happy for now.

Did you clear cache/memory from recovery after installing the Froyo firmware? I use LauncherPro and have no such problems here. Perhaps there were particular ones causing problems?

Definitely some apps are more problematic than others - I found the 'Pure' range of widgets very bad for inducing lag, I was using them before LauncherPro plus added vastly superior Friends/Calendar widgets for the same uses.

I have no lag issues with Launcher Pro on JP6 and Voodoo. I do have lag in the browser though, image intensive sites are nearly unusable and the browser often crashes i'm guessing due to lack of memory.
