So I brought an htc one x from vodafone a few days ago, and I am loving the device. My first phone upgrade since the nokia n95 which I brought just after release.

My issue is, since I started using the one x the battery life has been pretty bad, with me struggling to get through a day. If I play some games It dies within about 5 hours. I've been told however, that it can take a few days for the battery to get its max charge. So should I take it back or give it another couple of days?

Also, there is one dead pixel on the screen, would I be over reacting to return it because of that? Its so small and only visible if I really lok for it.

It gets better after a few power cycles. I had the same issue.

I would take it back, You will notice the Pixel everytime you look at the screen :)

Give it a week or two.. but you'll probably find that's what the battery life is meant to be :|

It's a Lithium Ion battery, it should take full charge straight away. If you're playing games then 5 hours wouldn't be unusual though, those big screens will eat battery power. My 5.3" Galaxy Note will do much the same, but if I use it sparingly then I can easily get 2 days out of it.

A dead pixel would annoy me, I'd certainly try and take it back, they may swap it out for another (unlikely) but they'd probably want to send it away for assessment and you'd be without it for 1-2 weeks. Possibly they might just tell you to go away, but can't hurt to ask.

Also be sure to try a factory reset, I don't know why but it's improved battery life for a few guys over at XDA. Haven't tried it myself yet

Most retailers have a cut off for replacement rather than repair. make sure you don't go past that date if you want a replacement. Often it's a week sometimes two. A dead pixel on a brand new premium device would p me off, but there may be what the manufacturers consider acceptable amounts of those in the warranty. But it sucks for, as I previously said, a premium device that is the HTC flagship.
As for the battery, use it like a laptop replacement and it will die in half a day, use it as a phone and it will probably last you 3. The skill in smartphone ownership lies somewhere in the middle.

Yeah unfortunately for new devices it's usually 3 dead pixels. I have one on the Galaxy S2, and it frustrates me, but others don't notice it

As above, battery will improve heaps. Just crank everything hard over the first week, drain it low, and it'll be fine!

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

If you dont like the stuck pixel, I suggest quickly complaining to the store, ignore any guff about manufacturer's acceptance of dead pixel really its not your problem, your relationship is between yourself and the store. Make the rest of it their problem, otherwise $30 is about all it costs to go to disputes, and you'd win easily as the CGA covers you.

Thanks for your replies. Since I haven't owned an expensive phone recently, I'm not sure what battery life I should be expecting, so i'm hoping it will improve. As for the dead pixel, I really can't be bothered having it sent away and being without it for a few weeks over one tiny dot on the screen. I will have had it 7 days on Wednesday, do you think the Vodafone store would be likely to swap it on the spot?

I gave the phone a good workout this evening, playing lots of battery-sucking games (which I normally don't do) and managed to drop the battery really quick. Heres a screenshot. Do you reckon this will improve? Or is this normal?

Stop playing games? 3hrs on 46% is all good.

I think that battery usage is decent! That GTA game is designed to run continously in the background until you properly exit from the menu

they'll probably send it off to get replaced (or repaired depending on time frame since purchase etc), rather than doing it on the spot. this is because they can't be sure the manufacturers would provide them with a replacement given that it's left the store, so if they replaced it for you then the manufacturers didn't replace it they'd be down $1000 and have an unsaleable phone

Until battery technology catches up you really need to have a charger in every location you spend much time at. A cradle on your desk at work would help a lot. You can get extended batteries that you can attach, and others you can keep in a bag and plug in for a quick charge sometimes that'll do a few full charges, but batteries are heavy.

This is one reason I haven't gotten a smart phone yet. The Motorola Droid Maxx (IIRC) has a two day battery life and is pretty compact still. Once they get to 3-4 days I might consider one. My current simple Nokia lasts 3-5 days on a charge, and when I do plug it in it only takes 30-45 minutes to fully charge. I use my tablet for games and stuff, no idea how long the battery lasts, days. If I play intensively it still lasts at least a few hours, but I only do that at home so battery life isn't a problem.

Isn't that the truth!! I have 4 chargers for my iphone 4s, 1 at home, 1 at work, 1 at the better halfs, and the last one is in the work car.

Also, definitely turn off push email notification and just pull every 30 or 60 minutes instead. You'll notice a big difference in battery consumption based on my experience with other devices.
