A friend is looking to spend up to $300 on a new phone, and if anyone has recommendations on an ICS or JB phone in that range, I'd be very grateful. At the moment I'm thinking it's between the Desire X (ICS)  and the Galaxy Duos (JB) . Any major red flags for  either one, or should she also consider the Experias in that price range?

Does it have to be Android?

The new Nokia Lumia 520 is a very good little phone for $299.

Otherwise there is the Telecom Y300 for $199.

She's very keen on a large range of apps available, and most of her friends have Android, so I don't know how keen she would be to have a Windows phone. I will present it as an option to consider though, thanks!

Don't be scared off by the so called lack of apps for Windows Phone. All the major apps you'll ever use are available.

Unfortunately there seems to be a lack of decent sub $400 Android devices around at the moment.

I have an Xperia Go. Waterproof was my main buying point as I work outside. It does have a smaller and lower resolution screen than a lot of the newer phones but is 1 Ghz Dual core.   OTA upgrade from GB 2.3 to ICS 4.0.4  HSDPA download speed 14.4 Mbits/s

I'd take a second hand S2 over most new phones for $300.

Thanks for the replies - I hadn't even thought of a 2nd hand S2, definitely something I'll encourage her to consider

If you're willing to stretch to just over $400 then I'd recommend looking at Samsung galaxy s2 plus. Around $410 on pricespy. I just recommended these to a friend and they are in the process of getting currently. They wanted the good camera of the s2.
