Hey guys

Just thought Id let you know that using this method

http://honai-android.blogspot.co.nz/2014/01/how-to-root-galaxy-s4-lte-i9505-on.html

I was able to successfully root my i9505 without tripping the knox flag :D

I used to be on an old bootloader but i decided to bite the bullet today and update it. I dont think the newer software works as well with older bootloaders especially kitkat

Nice. I'm not bothering with 4.3, but it gives me hope for a rooted S4 4.4 with Touchwiz (plain Android is ugly and slower to use).

You can get 4.4 touchwiz roms that work with the old bootloader but it would be better to use the new one,

Yeah same. I much prefer samsungs way of quick settings, their SMS app, etc

Why is the new bootloader better? I'd like 4.4 just for tweaks and better performance, hopefully less hangs and such, but yeah I do much prefer touchwiz to my wife's moto g which is close to stock.

Id just think it would be more optimized? but maybe im wrong. There are roms on xda with touchwiz kitkat you can use with old bootloader

I might get around to that over Easter - any recommendations for a trustworthy well tested ROM?

Tim I'm assuming you can with the likes of the custom kitkat that are using the new bootloader but not so with the likes of Shoman which is still on old bootloader. Actually still on shoman and its very good, battery life has never been better even with now using the Gear 2 I'm getting 1 1/2 days

Stuck with Stock ROMs, if you install a custom recovery it will trip Knox I think. It's written in the XDA thread that the OP's link references.

Best to stick with the old bootloader - the only limitation is having to use an old LTE modem (can use 4.4 GSM modem) but if you flash a new LTE modem it breaks sound I think.

I haven't read thread yet but thought as much and think you are right with the Modems. Really not much use to me then but good to see the Devs are getting round all this, much to the disgust of Samsung I'm sure. Interesting o see how it all develops

That's the problem with custom ROMs - too many options, too many risks. That's probably why I'm still on 4.2.2, though I have good backups (nandroid etc) so the risk isn't huge unless I brick it. Though I've done heaps with my older tablet and never had a problem.

it would be interesting to compare phones that are on custom v Telecom stock to see difference. I've been on telecom and custom Roms since my first flashable S5630 ( I think) and never had any issues using non Telecom firmware , but that's not to say there isn't any.
