Are there other Android options to the Moto G 2nd generation in the $300 max range?
Thanks.

... or Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 (http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=3216215), normally $300 but on special at the moment for $253 (PB Tech) or $269 (Warehouse Stationery).

You haven't said what network the phone's going to be used on, but this Smart Ultra is limited to Voda and 2 Degrees. Calls on the Smart Prime (phone mentioned in previous post) are fine on all networks, though someone in the post on this phone says it doesn't do all 4G frequencies on the Spark network).

From another forum on GZ... VF Smart Ultra 6 Thread

NikT:
Wade:

I expect you can't say but is there any feeling that VF/ZTE will have a solid update program for these handsets? I know it is a dream but would love to know that we will eventually see Android M on these

I have a feeling everyone will be pleasantly surprised. ;)

Read into that what you will but as i am already invested with this phone I taking it as a good sign re: future updates

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by carrier independent. Supported updates independent of carriers would be nice! I believe Motorola does not release patch for G until carrier has tested and agreed. In practice I have no idea how that process works but I'm guessing it is some combination of geo and local carrier consensus.

Motorola official statement:

M provides a desktop updating application but ime it never gets anything for g2.

By carrier independent I meant that   they do not have any carrier bloat in them .  My wifes   Moto G has always gotten updates as soon as they come out.  It was bought from JBHiFi..

This topic links to a stagefright detection app:

If you feel any need to run an additional test.

They were not entirely correct. I have one and use it on the Spark network.

It wont out of the box, it must be unlocked first.

Then it doesn't support band 28 700mhz 4G, so for example I'm in Tauranga, where that is sparks only band for 4g. so my phone doesn't do 4g here, it does however do HSPDA. Which is fine for my needs.

kandjc: A salesman at the Spark shop told me the Vodafone Prime 6 will not work on Spark network.

They are correct AFAIK, Looking at the specs it doesn't support 850 WCDMA "3G" so will have very limited coverage on Sparks Network outside the main centers that have 2100mhz infill coverage.
