I've been out of the smart phone loop since I got my basic work phone.  Its broken and replacements are windows phone based, completely incompatible with my android apps.  As work has a BYOD policy in place, I intend to replace the work supplied one with my own android based phone.

I have a budget of approximately $750.  I'm not bothered about imported vs. retail here, but I do care that the bands work on 2degrees or Vodafone.

Basic spec is:

  • Decent 5" plus screen
  • 32GB ROM
  • 3GB RAM
  • MicroSD slot
  • Android 6 with upgrades likely.
  • Not touch wiz based as I can't stand it, unless I can be compelled with an awesome hardware spec.
  • Would prefer removable battery
  • 3000mAh or there abouts
  • Wireless charging would be cool, but not necessary.. If I get it added later that is fine too.
  • no stutter, lag when doing things.
  • Scratch resistant glass
  • Decent camera for still photos, not so concerned about videos.

Now, this must have a decent email client installed that doesn't limit size of emails as I will connect it to my work and personal exchange servers, should also have minimal bloat installed and if it does would prefer that they can be uninstalled.

Don't really play games on it to be honest, but might if it is fast enough!

Like the idea of a metal unibody, but polycarbonate would be ok too.

What would people recommend for my budget?  I've seen the Huawei P9 and like the camera and look/shape.  Apparently hardware is a little underwhelming compared to others but competent enough for general use.. Any others?

Cheers,

Chris

OnePlus 3 fits your bill perfectly.

Alternatively, Huawei P9 comes on special at JB Hifi for $699.

Either of these would be good

Thanks.  I've looked at the one plus 3 and wasn't sure on the camera and the fixed battery; the P9 looks nice, especially the camera, but I can't find it for $699, JB Hifi have it on the website for $899.

Hands down LG G5.  Can get it for about $600.  There is some talk about bad build quality online, but mine's been perfect - best phone I've ever used.

Or - looks like PB tech have the new Motorola Moto G4+ for $499.  Meets your requirements, except for 16gb ROM (chuck in a 64gb card and who cares)

No but with 64GB ROM it would most likely suffice.

I bought a OnePlus 3 from PB Tech a few days ago - couldn't be happier. This is coming from an ex-Nexus 6P user BTW,

Reason why I upgraded was mainly for its RAM - 6GB is awesome, you can have several tabs open in Chrome while having heavy apps running in the background without Android killing them off..

I think for it's price, the OP3 is overall the best phone you can get - 6GB RAM, Snapdragon 820, 64GB storage, dual-SIM, stock-ish Android which is fairly up-to-date (7.0 coming soon), good design (slim and lightweight yet feels quite sturdy); 1080p screen makes the 3000mAh battery last quite a bit compared to other phones with the 1440p screen.

The physical mute/do-not-disturb button is a pretty nifty feature - kinda like the one on the iPhone, except this one has three modes - normal, priority and silent. So if you're in a meeting or something you could change the mode without even taking your phone out of your pocket.

IMHO the best part of the OP3 is the OS and its customisability - eg you can choose between on-screen navigation buttons or physical buttons; you can customize the button actions (shortcuts for single press, double-press, long-press etc); screen-off gestures (eg draw a 'V' when the screen is off to toggle the torch); toggle for night-mode.. all minor but useful additions which add to the the experience, without bloating the OS like TouchWiz.

Oh and FWIW, there's absolutely no bloatware on the phone. Even the number of Google Apps pre-installed is quite low, so when you get the phone you don't need to go thru the usual process of disabling all the unwanted apps..

Wonder if you can find the HTC 10 for that price? Great battery, solid screen, fantastic camera. Bugger all bloat, SD, water resistance.

Far superior in what way? The S7e has a superior camera, battery and screen.

Coming from someone that has both phones, the OP3 is a lot better on battery, even with the smaller battery it does last longer than the s7 edge.  This is with the same apps etc installed on both phones using them the same way.

Plus the dash charging kicks the snot out of samsungs quick charge

The camera and screen are a little bit nicer on the s7 edge but not hundreds of dollars more nicer.

The LED notification light on the samsung however is just awful with their non standard design and the "blue for everything" thing they do.

OP3 you can use lightflow for custom stuff that does not work correctly on samsung devices.

If i had to pick between the 2, I would go OP3 over the s7 edge.

You can get the Nexus 5X from Warehouse Stationery for $399.

No crappy Samsung Bloatware (or explodeware) and devices updates for at least another year (it's got Android 7.0 now)

This is actually quite compelling, compared with the Pixel's pricing!
