Rather than making a new thread for every question I had regarding my new Samsung Galaxy A3, I thought this might be easier to have all my queries in one thread (@freitasm, any chance of merging them all into this one please?)

Slowly getting there with my new phone setup. It looks like I can't transfer Whatsapp messages from my old Nokia Lumia 930 to the Samsung - anyone know of any way I can point Whatsapp to my Onedrive backup?

Also - when trying to transfer contacts etc from the old phone to the new (using Samsung Smart Switch Mobile) I connect the two devices wirelessly successfully, but then the Samsung reports "the devices have been disconnected". Any ideas on how to keep them connected?

Notifications also seem weird when the phone is locked - on my Nokia I get an envelope with a new e-mail, or an "f" with a FB message/alert, Whatsapp etc. This one doesn't seem to do that as far as I can tell. I'm sure it's just a setting but I'm not sure what one I should be looking at.

Speaking of notifications, is there any way of making it show the operator's name in the corner or something? Or at least letting me know I'm on 3G/4G instead of wifi? The icons for wifi and 3G etc look exactly the same. At least if it said "Vodafone NZ" in the corner (or similar) it would give me a clue...

Thanks in advance smile

Backup your whatsapp messages using Google Drive: https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/android/20887921

Save your contacts to your Google account so you can import them easily on the new mobile when you sign into your Google account.

If you don't have a Google account make one, it's free.

Backup your photos and videos to Google Photos so you can import them on your new mobile at the same time.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but... https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/wp/28060005

Unfortunately, at this time it is not possible to transfer your chat history to an Android or iPhone.

To sync contacts to your Samsung don't use Samsung Smart Switch Mobile follow these steps:

  1. Sync your Microsoft account with your Windows Phone.
  2. Sign in to your Microsoft account on your PC (you can do this at people.live.com), then press the dropdown next to Outlook, and select People.
  3. Select Manage and choose "Export".
  4. Select whether you want all your contacts or specific ones from a folder
  5. Use Microsoft Outlook CSV
  6. Now press "Export" to store the exported contacts file "OutlookContacts.csv" on your computer (e.g. on your Desktop).
  7. Now go to contacts.google.com and select "Go to the Old Version" (Login with a Google Account on your New Android Phone)
  8. Select "Import Contacts"
  9. Choose the file you downloaded from people.live.com
  10. Follow the rest of the onscreen Instructions

Sorry, I don't have any experience with copying SMS/MMS's on Windows but maybe the following video's instructions will work...

Anyone got any suggestions? All I need to do is transfer my SMS's/MMS's to my new phone and I'm done...would be nice to start using the new one :)

there is nothing stopping you using your new one.

the problem is your going windows phone to android, if it were android to android it would be simple.

can you not use onedrive to do it?\

Thanks for that suggestion. I tried the second link and there seems to be an issue with my Onedrive account (can't upload backups) - I've contacted Microsoft to have a look.

Forgot to add, when I tried the application in the second link, it found all my contacts but no messages to transfer - which is odd, as (even with Onedrive issues) it was all backed up a week ago at the latest and should still be there to retrieve, surely?

Sorted!
I found a new app that does (mostly) exactly what I need. It didn't do MMS - but that's okay, I only had 20-odd of them. I can recommend this one, very handy indeed (for future generations that find this thread) :)
