Thanks to "aim" for the home screen thread. As a result, I've discovered several widgets I didn't know about and also the Launcher Pro home app....which I seriously like.

If you haven't tried Launcher Pro.....do. It's good.

It has a couple of quirks. Widget re-sizing using a drag-frame isn't obvious...and takes some thinking to make the frame go away....but it works.

The free version is in the Market and you get the Paid upgrade via PayPal because the author is in South America. Kiwi devs take note.

I bought the Launcher Pro upgrade. (US$2.99) You get some really nice widgets as part of that.

Yeah I bought it as well. Fantastic app, hell of a way to customise your device. Any suggestions on some cool widgets your running Steve?

I don't think it's really worth paying for launcher pro, the free version does a lot.  The alternative to L.Pro is ADW Launcher, also free.

If you want to customise the look and want a pretty screen you can do a lot with the following apps (all free)

Weather
Weather forecast V2 - http://www.appbrain.com/app/org.koxx.forecast_weather.v2
Snowstorm - http://www.appbrain.com/app/se.f1nally.snowstorm

Home Screen
Apps Organiser - http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.google.code.appsorganizer
Desktop Visualizer - http://www.appbrain.com/app/jp.co.bii.android.app.dskvzr
Multiicon - http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.h9kdroid.multicon

Calender
Calwidget - http://www.appbrain.com/app/net.eggenstein.android.calwidget
Smooth Calender - http://www.appbrain.com/app/se.catharsis.android.calendar

Time & Date
Retro Clock - http://www.appbrain.com/app/nl.jsource.retroclock.android
Tajm - http://www.appbrain.com/app/net.bajawa.tajm
D Clock - http://www.appbrain.com/app/jp.xfutures.android.dcw
Digital clock (by Maize) -http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.maize.digitalClock

Battery
Battstatt - http://www.appbrain.com/app/net.bajawa.battery

The only apps I would consider paying for are;

Pure series (Pure Messenger / Pure Calender / Pure Grid calender) - €1.49 each
http://www.appbrain.com/browse/dev/Francois+DESLANDES
don't need to buy the weather as his free version is already very good.

SwitchPro - $1
http://www.appbrain.com/app/alei.switchpro

Widget Locker - $1.99
http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker

If you wan't to change all the app icons in one go using a theme (instead of doing one by one using .png's with desktop visualizer for free), then you can try "better cut" or "open home".  But I havn't tried these yet.

If you want to make your phone look like everyone else, you can try beautiful widgets or fancy widgets, but i don't think it's worth they money compared to all the other free/paid apps.

What i like about launcher pro is that i can change the default name that appears under the app shortcuts.

Other than that i haven't really looked into all the other options. I was fairly happy with ADW Launcher before hand but i like the default dock on Launcher Pro much better.

You can also change the name under the app shortcuts on the homescreen using desktop visualizer for free, it also lets you change the icon to any png file, or use the icon from an existing app.  I used this to make my brut map / brut nav home screen icons to look like the original maps / nav icons and removed the (brut) text.

PS> I assume renaming is a paid feature, because i didn't see it in the free version???

Launcherpro is the only app I've bought so far. What does that tell you? :P

Nope, Long press home -> Shortcuts -> Activities -> Whatever you want -> Change the name when it pops up.

LauncherPro is brilliant, have paid once and donated the cost again once to the Dev.

Easily worth the $2.99 - to the person who wouldn't pay: its calender widget is much nicer than the Pure calenders (previously I had paid for both because the Galaxy S has no good calender widget inbuilt), not to mention the constant update love. When the friendstream-esque widget comes in it'll knock Pure Messenger off my homescreens too. In short: its worth it.

oh didn't mean that i wouldn't pay, just meant that it wasn't necessary to pay if you to use the core launcher pro features.  i probably will buy it just to support the author too.  Also he has said that the price will go up soon given all the bundled widgets it comes with.

Aim: if you use switcherpro i found i had to use it with APNToggle, but i imagine if you use 3g watchdog you already have apntoggle installed as it works with that app too.

Ive also spent the weekend playing with LauncherPro (the free version) and Ive loved it.

I have tajm at the top of the screen with the time and date, switchpro at the bottom with 7 toggles and three lots of docks with 5 on each one. This gives me everything I do regularly and a nice clear screen.

After searching for hours on a background I ended up with a great shot of HAL and 'he' sits perfectly between the two widgets on the home screen just staring at me ;)

Im tempted by WidgetLocker to see if I can remove the standard clock and replace with tajm and Im off to see what these three can do for me.

I also loved Smooth Calendar but the reality is I have very little going on in my life so I removed it from the home screen.

just be aware that widget locker can have a few issues, however most users seem very happy with it. I think as long as you have latest version with fast phone it is probably ok. if you search on youtube there is a very good review of it.  If you have tajm, you might want to add his matching battstatt widget.

you can use app organiser so that when you click on dock icon it loads a little popup with a selection of app shortcuts. eg click tools on the dock and it loads a box with your 6 fav tools.

Oh my bad.

Although I 'have' tajm I dont use it, I have the retro clock and date across the top. Although its very nice I got fed up with trying to work out what the time was actually saying !

Battstat looks great aswell, but I use the battery indicator on switchpro to keep things neat and tidy.

Can someone tell me if there is anything more to Apps Organiser other than giving apps a label and letting you put a shortcut to it ? Whats he difference to just creating a folder and putting the shortcuts you want in there ?
