hi there

I have a Galaxy S 2.1 at the moment
everythings completely standard and I will be upgrading it to 2.2 Froyo as soon as I download Kies.

However I was wondering rooting my Galaxy was the right option as I find it a bit laggy sometimes.

As I am not too familiar with rooting etc, is it the same as jailbreaking an iphone??

And if so, will this mean that I will have access to more apps for free?

And can someone also show me a link that teaches you how to root your Galaxy?

I know I am asking a bit too much but your help would be much appreciated

I recommend z4root from the market. It's free. Download and install the permanent root. Follow the prompts, pretty easy.

After root, the phone will reboot and and check for the superuser icon in the app drawer. The icon is android with an eyepatch.

For a quick and easy to apply lag fix. Look for the one click lag fix also on the market. After that, any further questions are best asked in the mega thread. LOTS of Galaxy S users watch that thread.

I've rooted my phone in a different manner (and have 2.2.1 running with a custom rom from a kitchen) but found this tutorial on the internet that may help answer some questions for you.

I've not tried this.

Make sure you've got access to the three button recovery mode. You can easily test this. You wont do any harm to your phone by testing.

Hold the Volume UP plus the Home button and then the Power button together. When the phone shows the Galaxy S boot screen release all 3 buttons.

A black screen with blue writing (I think it's blue) will appear with about 4 lines of information. If you can get that, you're good to go. This means that if things went belly up later, you've got the ability to use Odin (in Download mode) to get the phone back from a soft brick.

Anyway, when you're in recovery, just select to reboot system and your phone will boot up.

The download mode is the Volume DOWN + Home + Power. It's most likely that if you've got recovery, you've got download - which is what you'd use to flash a stock Samsung firmware using Odin.

BTW, next to no one on that thread uses Kies. Kies is unreliable. And you'll be waiting a month of Sundays (and more) for Kies to provide official releases in New Zealand, even of 2.2.

Anyway, the thread is a happy little place with lots of people sharing experience and knowledge.

Sorry small detail:
The phone must be off when you test the 3 button recovery.

The new Kies looks like a full rewrite, it's much more reliable and less crap looking... but I still don't use it :-)

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

I wish people would stop recommending that thread. The forums here, like most sites, make it easy to have threads that are neatly and narrowly focused on a specific question or topic, so that anyone can easily find what they are looking for. Yet for some reason, the local Galaxy S owners have abandoned that simple principle in favor of a gigantic mega thread wrapping up anything remotely connected to the phone. It has become very difficult to find answers to specific questions that may or may not have been asked already. When you do find some seemingly relevant advice, it is often difficult to determine which variants of the Galaxy the advice is applicable to. And to make things worse, some people in there cannot even manage to stay on the topic anyway.

I think we would all be better off if the thread were locked. At the very least, people should not be discouraged from creating new threads which may actually be focused enough to be useful.

yes that thread is a big ugly monster, but it's very useful to keep subscribed to to find out what is happening with the galaxy s. with regards to specific questions then i would google search the xda website.

You're missing the point. The idea in referring users to that thread, is that there are many Galaxy S users who are watching that thread that can ably assist in a prompt manner. The site has a search button also, and it's not often used. You'd best be emphasizing users to use the search button rather than focusing on the size of the Galaxy S thread.

Still I'm divided on that. I would like to see users working a bit smarter, for example creating topic with clear subjects, such as

[Galaxy S] Problem with...
[Galaxy S] New ROM

But instead people create topics with "Help" in the subject... I mean, we can't organise everything for everyone. If people worked out a structure they could easily use the forum for their benefit and leverage the Google search, seeing most posts here get into the index in a matter of minutes.

So, in this view I'd love to lock that thread. On the other hand people are using that a lot, at the moment...

I might post there on this.

For the firmware you're on, you want "z4root" and "OCLF" (One Click Lag Fix - v1.3 at least).

Both are from the same author: RyanZA. You can get them via XDA Developers.

You root the phone with z4root (blindlingly simple) then run the OCLF app and set up the lag fix. Also very easy to do.

z4root does NOT work on Android v2.2.1 ("JPY") on the Galaxy S. But there is no lag issue on v2.2.1, so you don't need it. The SG-S phone also lets you take screenshots of anything without needing root access.

if you apply lagfix by any method eg. OCLF (i think voodoo is the best) then you need to undo the lagfix prior to doing any software updates with keys otherwise you will "root" (stuff up) your phone.

Sounds like hypocrisy to me.

Nobody is discouraging anyone from starting threads on specific topics, they are simply pointing out that the answers already exist in that mega-thread. And search is definitely usable.

On virtually all the tech sites I frequent, there are a large number of threads that ask for the exact same information, requiring responders to repeat themselves unnecessarily when the relevant info is readily available. All it takes is to use the supplied search.

Personally, I'm happy that mega-thread exists and it's helped me many times. It will die when it's no longer useful.

My reference to off-topic posts in the other thread was concerning purely personal banter, unrelated to anything about the phone or the wider discussion. Two separate replies on this thread suggested actually asking new questions in the other thread. The implication was that the OP should not have started this thread. That seems like a discouragement to me. I was responding to that, and yes, it may have been off the topic in the thread title, I felt that it was relevant to the discussion. Should I have raised my concerns in the other thread?
