Anyone got the latest Warehouse Stationery catalogue? They're advertising a 7" Android tablet with capacitive screen for $199. Seems too good to be true.

Here is the link to their website;http://www.warehousestationery.co.nz/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/WSL-B2C-Site/en_NZ/-/NZD/ViewOfferDetail-Product?ProductRef=213135@WSL-B2C

Appears to be one of these; http://www.cruztablet.com/products.php

No model info on the website or the mailer so not sure which one it is.

Also interesting is no official "Market" and uses the Amazon market.

Anyone seen one in store?

The fact they dont mention the CPU and/or GPU is a worry.  Plus android 2.0?  I would have thought at least 2.2

It seems it runs:
Processor XBurst, 600MHz (MIPS Ingenic JZ4760)
Graphics: 2D Graphics, Alpha Blending, Up to 100M Pix/S and 1080P

So pretty weak.

There is a 2.2 upgrade on the Cruz website but yeah pretty weak specs. Probably ok for $199 though. I was surprised it had a capacitive screen.

There is a big sticker on the box telling you to upgrade to Android 2.2, i'm not you could expect much more for $199, I think we were a little spoiled with the HP touchpad.

I am on half dial up speed at home, which is barely tolerable at loading simple pages. So I need something to allow me to watch TV3 on demand to catch up on the 3 regular shows I watch. Since TV3 on demand has increased the minimum from 128K which was good on mobile broadband up to 300K, it uses a huge chunk of my data... in fact to watch those 3 shows uses ALL of my monthly allowance!

I was thinking of getting a Telecom V9 ($299 at Telecom, or $349 at TWH with sim/2GB data/car charger), until I spotted the mailer with the Cruz tablet in it. I decided spending an extra $50/month to watch 3 TV shows a week was probably not a good idea, but with Wi-fi I can sponge off friend's internet.

So I got one of these held aside for me and will go collect in an hour or so... then I can tell you how good/bad I find it.

IlDuce, interesting that you mention the V9, as a tablet I actually rate it (I got the wife one). Its incredibly good value when you consider it has 3G, camera and GPS which none of the other cheapies have. I know its a resistive screen but its actually a good resistive screen. Given the choice I would probably pay the extra $100 and get another V9. The V9 cant run flash though as its not ARM V7.

Unless of course someone tells me that watching TV3 on demand will not work on Android 2.0/2.2?

Is the GPS in the Telecom v9 an actual GPS receiver (ie like in the Nokia 6165i). My current mobile has "GPS", but it just works off cell towers to estimate location.

Whats the processor speed/ram in the V9?

Not if you consider the cost of the sd cards included, but if you exclude them there is quite a few better specc'ed tabs out there with capacitive screens and better cpu/gpu combinations for around the same coin.

Flash depends on the processor and not the fact that its 2.2 - some devices have 2.2 but cant run Flash.

The Cruz support page has this;
No. Neither the Reader R100 series, the Tablet T100 series, nor the Tablet T301 supports Adobe Flash. This is a limitation of Android 2.0 and the device hardware.

So I dont think a 2.2 update will necessaril;y fix the issue.

Yes, the V9 has a real GPS, my wife uses hers for geocaching and its very accurate. The V9 runs at 600mhz I believe but is hardly laggy.

You probably need to find out if it does support the video you want to watch.
It wont be whether android supports it so much as whether flash etc is supported on the hardware and whether the processor is powerful enough to render video effectively.

Those cheapish android pads are pretty good for basic web browsing etc.

PS You could always try installing the skyfire web browser. I gather that their site caches/proxies and converts stuff like flash on the fly so that devices that cant handle flash natively can still play it back. I think its free - dont know how good it is - but have seen a lot of people mention it.
