I've lived in Auckland and Christchurch, there's racism in both places. I've also lived in Sydney and Melbourne. Ditto.

Trying to quantify differences to score points is just stupid IMO. YMMV.

Terrorism charges laid.

The man accused of committing the Christchurch terror attack is now facing three more charges, including one under the Terrorism Suppression Act.

Australian national *********, 28, already faces 50 charges of murder and 38 of attempted murder.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush said the man has now been charged with engaging in a Terrorist Act under section 6A of the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002.

Don't see what the terrorism charges add. Bill Hodge is possibly the most annoying legal academic in my books but for once I agree with him. If gutless loser is convicted of murder, he's going away for a long time (likely forever); adding on terrorism charges/convictions won't per se lengthen his non-parole period. By making whether his act constitutes terrorism and what is terrorism a live issue, as opposed to just whether he intended to kill people and in fact did kill people, the Crown risks giving him a platform to rant and rave.

We are not going to deport him. At least not until he's served a massive number of years. As a country, we would have no credibility if we are seen as unwilling to incur the costs of holding to account someone who (giving some theoretical account that he might be found not guilty for a moment) is almost certain to be found guilty of the murder of 51 people

Maybe it's not about him.
Perhaps the group(s) that he was associated with / supported him will be designated as terrorist organisations under the terrorism suppression act.

Again, I also struggle to see what purpose that would serve. The general indications have been that the guy's just a loser who hangs around a bit in loose groupings of white supremacist losers. As obnoxious as they are, they are unlikely to cross the very high threshold of being classified as terrorists and I am not sure that merely because one of their members might be convicted of murder that you would automatically be able to classify them as such, although I haven't exactly studied the Act in great detail. There can be legitimate social reasons for wanting to unambiguously label the loser as the terrorist that he is but the risks of giving him a platform are high.

Yesterday I was reading a story on Stuff. To my surprise (or not), a photo down the page (captioned "Police investigating the death of Angela Blackmoore searched the Riccarton headquarters of the Templars MC") shows a banner with an eagle and swastika. An the photo is from 1995.

So yes, there's that.

I agree it's unacceptable. Are the chch Templars actually a race based gang though? For example Mongrel Mob gang has used the symbol, presumably for shock value, without any intent of nazi-ism or racism.

Probably because they are too knuckle-dragging dumb to know what it means. I doubt many such thugs got high marks in history class.

Great article from Stuff. One of the things I take from that is the victim support process is inadequate for anyone at all. Looks like it started as some kind of volunteer organisation and does not really have the ability to provide the wrap around hug support needed by any victim of violence. Imo the whole thing should be directly funded by ACC as a proper service for victims.
