I've been happily using Outlook 2016 on my desktop with Office 365, but after a clean Windows 10 reinstall yesterday, I am buggered if I can get it to work.  I've read various threads including this one from 2016 and tried pop3.xtra.co.nz, and pop.mail.yahoo.com both with 995, but I repeatedly get authentication fails.  Webmail works fine, as does an iPhone 8, Windows 8 laptop and Windows 10 tablet.  And as I mentioned above, so did this desktop up until the OS reinstall yesterday.

I can't even open Outlook to access the 9Gb .pst file to look through old emails!  I _think_ I have a yahoo email address that I had to create when they stuffed up took over flickr, and I also have a gmail address, but I've used my xtra email since 2005 and would prefer to keep it.  Outlook is a deal breaker though.

  • Outgoing server: send.xtra.co.nz
  • Outgoing port: 465 (SSL)

Thanks for the reply freitasm

I think I know those settings off by heart I have typed them in so many times, although I did think that the Username was just the bit before the @ without the xtra.co.nz  But I had already tried it both ways a few dozen times.

I've always managed to fix these issues in the past, with the last time I had a problem I found that I had used a coma instead of a full stop in one of the server fields — my eye sight is not flash.

I've got to the stage of paranoia now, with thoughts of security settings in the latest Windows 10 build, but Windows 10 was fully up to date before reinstalling it yesterday.  I might have to bite the bullet and phone Spark support, but the thread I linked to suggests  I'll only get told to contact MS support.  The last time I had to call MS I waited for nearly two hours!

Had the same problem on my last install.  Search for "How to disable Simplified Account Creation in Outlook 2016" https://support.microsoft.com/en-nz/help/3189194/how-to-disable-simplified-account-creation-in-outlook follow the instructions and your problem should go away.

That is from MS Support.

Smithy you had me excited there.  I've actually been using the full setup UI which you can access from Control Panel > Mail, and I had wondered if there was some sort of clash of conflicting information.  I made the Registry change though, and it does bypass the Simplified setup interface, but I still get Authentication errors when trying to connect.

These are the settings I'm using.  freitasm said that the username should include the full address including the @xtra.co.nz but I think that you are supposed to leave that out in this field.  I have tried it both ways more times than I like to remember, with the same results.

trevor.dennis is actually an alias.  t.dennis36@xtra.co.nz was the original (I can't remember why I didn't keep it simple from the outset).  Here again, I have tried both ways

On the plus side, after your Registry mod I am able to open Outlook without an account, and access my big pst data file.  I needed that to access a couple of plug-in keys, but I reference it a lot.

So I am still stuck.  I am able to use xtra webmail, so I know the password is right.  Am I missing something that shows in the screenshot?

For what it's worth, setting an iPad up for the parents in the weekend, using 587 for the smtp port made it work - 465 it would just hang during the "verifying" process.

Predictable red face time.  I signed out of webmail so I could sign back in to check the password, and could not get back in.  So it looks like I had the wrong password. 😊

20 minutes on Spark Chat got me a new PW which I changed to the one I thought it was in the first place.

For anyone else's information, these are the settings that got the Outlook account working.

The port and encryption info in freitasm's post were OK of course.  In fact all of the info he posted was correct LOL.

Veering off topic, the reason I had to reinstall Windows on what is not a particularly old system is that some of my Lazy Nezumi Pro presets were broken after I installed Logitech's G-Hub software.  I don't play games, but I use G910 keyboard's G-keys with Photoshop for frequently used functions.  So far I have installed G-Hub after the OS reinstall and Lazy Nezumi is still working, but I am making strategic Restore points as I go.

Thanks for the help, and apologies for wasting your time.

AFAICT there is no edit option, and nor can I remove or change the linked image from the gallery page.  We give people the same advice on the Adobe forums, where I spend most of my online time, and the mods (of which I am one) frequently remove personal information from posts.  Email addresses can't be harvested from a raster image, and my email address is not hard to find, so I tend not to worry about it. Having said that, I did have several days of crazy spam numbers not so long ago.  There must have been 60 rubbish emails a day, and most of the were coming to both trevor.dennis@ and the original t.dennis36@ which I have not used in ten years!  Thanks for the heads up though.
